I’m sorry, but this has to be the most pathetic attempt at bashing a Bible passage that I’ve ever seen. How is providing a place for someone to stay while they wait for their trial a bad thing? That is exactly what is done in every country. If someone in the US is on trial for murder, we keep them away from the public because they might be wrongfully killed if they are innocent. Do you have a problem with this? Or is it only when it’s in the Bible that it is a problem? And of course someone is to be put to death only after they have their trial. The purpose of the trial is to determine whether or not the person is guilty. I honestly cannot tell if you are joking or not. If I didn’t know any better I would think you were a Christian doing a parody to troll atheists.

There's a moral here - if you are going to kill somebody do not use anything metal or wooden or a rock, that would make you a murderer. Strangulation or poisoning is a far safer method because it seems you will not be considered a murderer.

I can't speak as to the times of Moses, but in Medieval times, an executioner's sword usually had inscribed on it, "cast in the name of God, ye not guilty." Essentially, if you were the executioner, and the person you were executing was genuinely innocent, you couldn't be held accountable for murder.

    • @andystokes8702

You have to remember that this particular book, Numbers, is the fourth book of the Bible and was written (supposedly) by Moses. He supposedly wrote the first five books, the Pentateuch. You are correct, God allegedly told all these things to Moses (always when Moses was alone, he never spoke to or revealed himself to the masses) and Moses passed them onto the Israelites, God's chosen people. The priests get a really easy ride, they get a percentage of all the offerings made by the people, all the animals and food etc. The priests were Moses sons - so not at all questionable then. Sounds very sketchy to me. Seems like nepotism was rife even back then.

By attempting to extrapolate the meaning of this ancient text without the guidance of the Tulmud sets you up to look like an ignominious. I would encourage you to dig a little deeper into the reasoning behind these laws. Also, to suggest that the Levites weren’t ‘part of the family’ is a gross assumption of a culture you seem to know very little about; the Levites housed the tribes of the priests and these lands were awarded to assist the Levites with making a livelihood while still honoring their exclusive obligations in the Temple.

That was a weird combination of being oddly specific and frustratingly vague.
Why are the murder weapons so specific? I have to assume they are just intended as examples, but it doesn’t actually say that.
And then that last bit about not killing anyone ever. Does this only apply to killing Israelites? They are supposed to have slaughtered everyone in the towns, so there’s plenty of blood on the ground already. Presumably the bloody avenger guys are exempt, except this section talks about general bloodshed, not the murder that they are exempt from in their section.

    1. Happy New Year, Hemant!
    2. How much is a cubit? And "he" did say "around the town", so is one to assume that the town takes up the first 1000 cubits, and then the pasture lands are around it for 1000 cubits in each cardinal direction?
    3. What happened to "Thou shalt not kill"? I men, MEH, God breaks that rule all the time, but still.
    4. Okay, weird inconsistency: they mention iron, but not bronze. These are Bronze Age texts, or at least the oral tradition of the original thing would have come from no earlier than the Bronze Age. But they mention iron, which means that iron would have to have ben invented , AND already found in Palestine, by the time this version was written. Did you say you're using KJV? I can't remember. But it's definitely NOT the original oral tradition, or else I don't think they would even be able to mention iron, because they wouldn't have known what it was. I told you on Twitter: Religious Studies scholar, right? So we were trained to look for this kind of thing. This would be n outside-historical-context text, then. Look at me nerd out, LOL.
    5. I know that Biblical Law doesn't (and shouldn't) translate into real life, but the unintended murder thing MIGH have been where we got the concept of manslaughter. I'd have to look into that.
    6. It IS important in a legal sense to have corroborative evidence if it's available, but, say, if you kill my dad right in front of me, and I'm the only person who sees, well...they wouldn't take my testimony seriously anyway, because I'm a woman. I ALSO think it's two or three female witnesses to every one male witness, but that might come later on.
    7. You: "I'm glad the rich can't just buy their way out of a punishment..."
Me: "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...oh...good joke. And THAT is how seriously America takes the Bible, eh?"
    8. And I wonder if this outlaws honour killings (i.e. "You are a Levite and married my Benjaminite sister, so now I kill both of you") and mercy killings (i.e. kill the disabled infant before they can grow up to be a burden and to have a hard life, because THAT'S how we were--and still are--seen in some places and times).

I don't know about oral traditions, but these texts are definitely iron age, not bronze age. Numbers 35 is from the priestly source, which richard friedman dates to the time of hezekiah, well into the iron age, and which other scholars date even later.
I'm not aware of anything in the old testament which distinguishes the testimony of male and females.
