He would have been injured less, if he dropped into a fetal position, protecting his vital organs and using his arms to protect his head and neck.
Standing your ground may work with male bears, but not females with cubs.
Carry bear spray...best way to not get hurt...
I once encountered a young cub with its mother. The cub was about 25 feet in front of me with the mother near him. For no reason at all, the cub cried out, then the mother came after me. She chased me around a large flower bed. I knew I'd never make it to the house, so I tried anyway. Along the way, I picked up her cub and blocked my head with it. Let me tell you, she lunged within inches of me and I lost my hearing for a few seconds from her roar. I then told her the cub was fine, licked the cubs face and gently set the cub down. I immediately dropped into a fetal position and she smelled me then left...:-) The next day, they came back and the mother left the cub with me to play with, for several hours, as she went off to find food...:-) I played every day with that cub for the rest of the summer...:-) I was very young.
Years later, I took my 12 year old son to that property and into the woods at night. I knew a bear was there, so I told him to walk back to the house and lock the door and wait for me. Then the bear came out on her hind legs. I just stood there. She was over 7 feet tall and bent down and licked my face...:-) Then she showed me her three cubs. When a person was walking near our property, she became very angry and swatted me, knocking me over then leaving. I've seen her one other time since then. She has always protected me...:-)
Bears are so much like people. Their very strict. When a cub doesn't listen, a male will kill it, because they know it would be a problem later on.
Long long ago, Native Americans developed a strong bond with bears and a mutual understanding.
However, that bond has been broken ever since trump changed the laws for hunters in Alaska, allowing hunters to kill female bears with their cubs inside their dens. Bears spread the word and no longer feel safe in their dens. They are constantly moving inorder to be safe.
I paid a visit to Bear Country USA, and they allow people to actually hold bear cubs when their young. The cubs were a little older when I was there. They were in an electrified fenced yard. One young female cub held up her paw to show me her injuries from that fence. Then, all of a sudden, that young cub stretched both her arms up in the air, just like a human toddler, looked at me and said Mama. I broke down in tears...:-( A family close by, with a young child in a stroller, that saw it, also got upset...:-( It was around 9am, and the young cubs weren't fed yet. Young cubs eat just before the sun comes up. So that family and I walked to a stand and paid $5.00 each for a cup of berries and food for the cubs.
Those, like me, who spent time with wild bears have learned how to communicate with them. Bears don't hunt people. They protect their young and territory. Their territory is a large area where their family lives. Bears are not loaners. They have a very structured family circle.
Bears do not want any manmade item or even contact with mankind, especially since the murders of their families in Alaska...
So please take my advice and carry bear spray! No telling if any other method will work now.....
Mankind may never be able to repair the bond that was broken with bears.
