I saw the Beach Boys at the Bournemouth Winter Gardens. Keith Moon made a guest appearence. After the show I went through the side door and met them all. One of the greatest nights on my life.... I got all their autographs in the programme with a stubby old pencil. I still have them, I spoke to Dennis, who was playing the piano, for some time. He was gracious and generous. Truly golden memories!
I WORKED THE STAGE LIGHTS HERE IN SYDNEY AND WHEN THE BEACH BOYS PLAYED THIS SONG BROUGHT THE ROOF DOWN. DONE MANY ACTS BUT CAN TELL YOU THEY ARE PERHAPS THE BEST LIVE BAND EVER
He sang Help Me Rhonda, which got to number1; he was also instrumental on getting Sloop John B on Pet Sounds; and he got the Beach Boys to do Cotton Fields. In general, I think he brought a country/folk influence to the band.
Great info richard thank you. Over in the uk when this came out we didnt get any videos or footage so i thought the band was fronted by a lady - al's voice so harmonic and sweet
This takes me back to about 1970 when I went to a Beach Boys concert at the New Theatre in Oxford (England). They opened with this number, it made the hairs on the back of my head stand up, still does. Was the best music concert I have ever been to. Going to see them (some of) at the royal Albert Hall next May, can't wait.
@@keenancochrane4963 Brian is at the Royal Albert Hall early July an Mike Love about a month before. I would like to see both concerts especially Mike Love in his 80th year, but the pandemic casts a doubt.

I never really appreciated Al until i first heard this only this year ('24). He is incredible!! I was only truly turned on to this band last year. I was always a hard rock nutcase but with a love for some country. It's been a long and winding road for me musically. I've covered almost every genre (except hard jazz). I knew Brian Wilson was a genius a ling time ago but i didn't get the whole Beach Boys music thing until recently. I thought they were corny when i was little, but i did like Good Vibrations and a couple others. When i watched documentaries on them and really listened to God Only Knows i was absolutely BLOWN AWAY!! The vocals on the arrangement of the instrumentation on this song are inspired, and inspiring to me. Probably just another tune for them.

And on July 6th, 1970 it reached #1 {for 1 week} on the Australian Kent Music Report chart, it also peaked at #1 in Norway and Sweden... * "Cotton Fields" was composed in 1940 by Huddie 'Leadbelly' Ledbetter, he was also the first to record it...
An unusual song selection for the Beach Boys. But Al Jardine was a big fan and historian of folk music, and I understand he took over the production. It was a hit overseas, but American kids decided the Beach Boys were has-beens and ignored it. A wonderful, powerful effort.
Must have heard this as a kid on the radio in early seventies along with Break Away something must have stuck, had it on the album 20/20 and a more upbeat(single) version on UK release of Sunflower. Really enjoy both versions but think I prefer the 20/20 version as it leads you nicely into the second side of the album.
+Roque Yeah, it's a matter of preference. I prefer this, because it has longer verse. CCR version contain shorter verse which is repeated throughout the song. I think Beach Boys modified the lyrics in order to tell more story of their own. This is suitable to listen during long trip when driving a car, etc. That's why I prefer their version.
Esta buena canción la compuso LEADBELLY quien la canto y la publico en el año 1940 y la versionaron THE BEAC BOYS quienes la cantaron y la publicaron en el año 1968
Leadbelly did this originally and it surpasses the BBs cover, although Al Jardine arrogantly said that he wanted to give the song "a bit more personality" and then strips the song off it altogether. Leave the covers to Brian, Al.

When I was a little bitty baby
My mama done rock me in the cradle
In them old cotton fields back home
It was back in Louisiana
Just about a mile from Texarkana
In them old cotton fields back home
Let me tell you now well got me in a fix
I caught a nail in my tire doing lickitey splits
I had to walk a long long way to town
Came upon a nice old man well he had a hat on
Wait a minute mister can you give me some directions
I gonna want to be right off for home
Don't care if them cotton balls get rotten
When I got you baby, who needs cotton
In them old cotton fields back home
Brother only one thing more that's gonna warm you
A summer's day out in California
It's gonna be those cotton fields back home
It was back in Louisiana
Just about a mile from Texarkana
Give me them cotton fields
(it was back in Louisiana)
Let me hear it for the cotton fields
(just about a mile from Texarkana

You know that there's just no place like home
Well boy it sure feels good to breathe the air back home
You should a seen their faces when they seen how I grown
