    I absolutely LOVED this talk. At first I thought it was pointless and unorganized ... and I'm not sure why I even kept watching but I'm so grateful I did! I've listened to it at least 8x now! It has this powerful secret message! Lol seriously I love this! Thank you Rachel!!

    I thought it was informative, and for someone to disrespect her is rude. Her talk gives hope and it showed that you dont need alot, just focus, an idea, and will power to move forward in a world where your expected to need and rely on the people around you when that is anything but true. your talk was great and the only people that can complain about it are those who have not chosen to do better for themselves or are still waiting for someone else to do it for them. Thank you for your ted yalk Ms. koay

    Despite her bad grammar this lady has a good message!
    Follow your passions even if you don't feel 100% ready!
    **You don't need as much as you think you need.**
    I myself often find myself obsessing over details in preparation... lets just get MOSTLY ready and then do it!
    Other experts say: Just get 70% ready and go for it!

    I enjoyed her business experience and attitude
    "Do not wait for resources and start doing and planning"
    and for others who can't get the idea of her speech:
    do not focus on the details, focus on the point !
    if it means nothing to you it is really not her problem ~_~

    As TED Talks go, this is one of the most unremarkable ones I have listened to (and I have listened to quite a few). It needs focus and polish and needs to be to the point. Having said that, it is impressive that she is out there doing something - making something of herself. And it is great that she is turning her good fortune into something to help those in need. I wish her the best and am sure with more practice she will give much better talks in the future.

    Hey Apvatar3000 thanks for your comment. Sorry for not meeting the expectation or the "standard". I have to admit that I overlooked my schedule and prepared the talk in less than 24 hours (or rather unprepared). Anyway I'm glad that the content was aligned with the goal or the theme of TEDxKLWomen 2013; to inspire more women to start their business with my entrepreneurship experience, and I did receive message from some of the audiences that they're starting to pursue their dreams. I can't deny that the talk was terrible and indeed it's the worst I've ever done. Still, I wanna thank TEDx for inviting me and I'm happy that I've got my message across, making a difference in people's lives.

    What a wonderful talk Rachel. I agree that most people over think or over plan their dreams and end up doing nothing at all. Some people like to refer this as analysis paralysis. There are others who keep waiting for the perfect time or perfect idea because they are so afraid of failing.
    What you have shown here is courage to move out of your comfort zone and do something that is meaningful to you. I'm happy to know about your story Rachel and I am sure your hostel guests enjoy your genuine character.
    If I do drop by Penang I hope to check out Queen's Hostel too!

      It might take awhile to make the whole world vegan, but you can definitely make at least a couple thousand vegan pretty quickly by just starting your own vegan YT channel, blog, book, class, etc. get a degree in nutrition or study things pertaining to your dream and you will find ways to lead people to your way of thinking, thus making their health better, thus making their lives better, thus changing the world, one person at a time. :)

      TheWarscoming Thanks to you as a good English husband, your family speak good English. So what you say? Looking at other comments received, some even claimed that they can't understand the point the girl was trying to deliver. I guess it is Communication 101 that poor delivery of communication is a failure, in this case, of Malaysian education system. So yes, I do care about the ability to speak good English, as it reflects our state of education system. Simplistic maybe but I am just a layman, I can't be devising a more complex indicator (I could but I wouldn't).

      I've lived in Malaysia and my opinion is that a huge percentage of Malaysians are absolutely amazing in terms of languages. It's pretty common to see them speaking English Mandarin and Malay plus one or more other Chinese languages (Cantonese/Hokkien - especilly in Penang/Hakka) or perhaps Tamil. Think about it, completely different languages - not like speaking say Italian French and Portuguese.. different writing etc..
      You should be proud of your fellow Malaysians!

  • @adrianciu

    Hey Rachel you're really nice and your admission you had less than 24 hours is maybe an incentive to rethink the subject and go for a better argument and presentation. You can start with a short 2-3 paragraph statement just here to re-state what you have to say on the subject. Indeed, the title is VERY ambitious and leads one to expect A LOT!
    It is a subject worth a thorough preparation and a lot of serious thinking and experience.
    Waiting for your reply.
    Good luck!

    • @rachellwkoay
      @rachellwkoay 10 років тому +2

      Hey Adrian I know it was very ambitious and there were a lot I wanted to tell but well, I failed. To make it less abstract, here are some of my experiences happened in different stages of my life that I wanna share;
      1. It's sad when I see people make a decision based on what they cannot do or they choose certain path just because they "think" they have no better option. For example, back in my high school, most of my friends who choose to study in local universities not because they like the local universities but because they think they cannot afford to study abroad. I'm living in a family of 4 with an average malaysian monthly household income of 4,000 MYR. It's just impossible for my dad to pay for my college but I didn't give up my childhood dream to study abroad just because I cannot afford it. I loaned 20,000 MYR which was just enough for my first semester's tuition fees, flight tickets and 3 weeks of living expenses. I managed to graduate with distinction, make enough money for living, traveled every 2 months, paid off my debts, and paid for my whole family to travel to australia to attend my graduation. I'm an average person and I'm sure everyone too can do it if they make decision based on what they want instead of what they can't.
      2. It's even more sad when I see people finally decide to do something but they end up planning forever and having tons of excuses for not to start. At work, I meet many smart people with great minds and brilliant ideas. It's exciting to hear them sharing their dreams or plans but they always end it with a "but"; but I don't have that yet, but I don't have this yet. No one is perfect; at times, people just need a push. That happens to me too and I wish my talk can somehow inspire these people.
      3. Most importantly, I hope to see people to give more and pursue less cause we seriously don't need so much. Many people living in poverty or even extreme poverty while many are living in good wealth and chasing for more. I think in life we should gain what we can't lose and give what we can't keep.
      I think it's too long and I shall stop. Cheers.

      Rachel Koay Hello Rachel! Great talk, I am a bit sad for the fact that this was a TEDxWomen because anyone could have taken a teaching from you.
      And I totally agree with what you are saying people just have to do things to actually be able to pursue their dreams. But, in all reality, it was possible because Australia provided you with the opportunities to do it (this is my opinion, I am also an international in Australia)
      And thank you for your talk it was great to hear. :) Cheers.
      Would be great to hear more from you. And I unfortunately when I go to Malaysia I cannot be hosted at your hotel :(. Maybe one day you'll open one that is not women only.

    Presenter's attempt to explain " How to live your dream" was honest and sincere.
    But as "random critics", noting that she ran a "PR firm and studied communications"-her presentation should have been -in par with " PR communications firms in general." In short-this was a terrible presentation. And if she watch's " her own self in this video"-she'll realize that. Future though is always promising. :)

    Alfred lim and apvatar... Do you have a better ted talk to present then do so. Dont try to discredit a speaker because she didnt give you the answers to your personal life problems. My problem is most of you people watch ted talks and expect answers to help your life. Well I hate to inform you but ted talks were not made to make your life better, they are designed as an information outlet to give people hope, a better outlook at something that concerns them or aspects of life that can be bettered by simple things and understanding. I think if you watch ted talks and have something negative to say maybe you need to rethink your lifes ambitions and realize that your only being negative because your unhappy with other peoples success.

    Self fullfilling prophecy... if you believe you will die at 60 you will.... 60 is not old ... please cancel that thought as wouldn't you rather enjoy your fruits of your labour. Some negativity in your talk. Imagine what you could do with a more positive mindset. Love and peace to you x

    Its great that shes enjoying her life but shes making the audiences lives a little worse by her poor decision of rushing to speak before shes matured as a speaker.

    The bit about deciding she'll die in her 60s seems sort of ignorant----
    Some good points made, though--- :)

    What the hell is this woman even talking about? I've listened for 11 -1/2 minutes, and have STILL not heard her say one thing about "needing less". Don't waste your time.

      Did you really listen? She started up a women-only hostel (a niche market with premium pricing) at around 25 years old without experience, without massive planning, without a serious business plan and without bank financing. She and her partner just threw themselves into it. For me that is serious "needing less".
      Try to be more positive!
      "Don't spend your life waiting for resources.. just do it" as she says at the end.

    How is this a talk about one needing lesser that one thinks? Presentation is nervous and uncomfortable. Good thing she is lucky enough to pursue her dreams to be a bartender because this is one of the worst TED talks I have ever heard!

      What a rude comment. Didn't someone teach you that if you don't have something nice to say don't say it at all? It's easy to be outwardly opinionated on the internet and I doubt you would say something like that to her face.

    • @alfredlimjeelong
      @alfredlimjeelong 10 років тому +1

      It is an honest comment. There is nothing said about how we can do with less or how her life experiences are relevant to the topic. Has she lived in a box, been minimalist or boondock in an RV full time to qualify speaking on this topic? Maybe the topic should be how I made millions without having to do much and had other people do the work for me?

      Alfred Lim Yes, but it's not what you are saying but how you are saying it.
