Idk why there is so much negativity in the comments! This guys is amazing and so talented. Sure it doesnt sound like ur normal music, but it still sounds unique and so cool in my opinion.
I always come back to this one every so often. Utterly brilliant.
TED's crowd dances more than the people in boiler room vids. who'd have thunk it
Truly brilliant! Finally an electroacoustic improvisation instrument that allows for and requires full engagement and gestures. After seeing too many composers with glowing faces, hiding behind laptops (and being one, myself) I find this video invigorating and inspirational.
Just love seeing music like these when they are made live in front of the audience. It shows how the dj/creator is really talented and knows his craft
I only heard of Tim Exile 10 or so minutes ago, while watching a FACT magazine performance. If you aren't into electronic music (and even if you are) you might not know this mag. They have something called against the clock, where they interview thousands of electronic music producers and show what kind of music they can produce in 10 minutes. If you aren't a musician you might not appreciate how difficult it could be to create an entirely new groove in such a short time. What is beautiful about what Tim does is that he creates new arrangements spontaneously. People that aren't into electronic music, or those that only listen to top 40ish electronic music, won't see the beauty. Which is why it is amazing that this guy was able to get even a tiny fraction of the crowd dancing. Some people wrote they probably pre-planned to dance. Ha. Obviously you have never been to a TED event. I was honored to speak at an event before (don't bother looking it up, my talk was awful), and one of the other speakers had performance similar to Tim's. It was very akward indeed, having some music that is only appreciated by a small group, and have it played to a group of people that don't know why they should appreciate it. Usually these kind of performances are very weird at TED, it is totally the wrong venue for this kind of shit. I would love to see this guy in a club/rave/party/etc , he'd kill it!
I love improvised music like this. I really shows the talent, intellect and creativity. You know you have done it right when the crowd reacts like that! An amazing performance!
WOW!!!! The power of vibration and personal expression unfolding in the present moment created from life. "LIFE is LOVE" great message at the end. I saw a lot of life at that TED talk. Keep sharing you in music and life!!!
He's legend... and I don't say that very often. Truly a brilliant programmer, truly underrated.
I got so happy watching this and then all of a sudden, Brian Cox, just sprinkling another layer of joy on top my evening.
A small rave inside TedX.! This proves raving is basic human instinct..!! Awsome DJing :D
At the LHC and no lasers for that sick rave? C'mon CERN lol
Trance DJ and producer here, this is very refreshing after the bigroom house infused trance tracks. 10/10 would dance.
Seven out of 5 stars
Holy Shit, that was some inspiring stuff. This guy has more talent in his little finger than the rest of the world combined. Absolutely amazing.
This video is great. Even if you don't like the music, you have to admit it is pretty awesome to see how music can bring people together like this.
Damn, that guy is fucking genious. He makes me move , he makes me dance
so good talent, so good audition
He is truly a modern day composer
If this man does not influence you to create your own music then nothing will!
this is old school techno. not modern house. making music from a/c units, hums and other nonsensical things does take a measure of talent, not to mention he actually DJ's. Way more talent than your famous DJs Nicky, David and Robert.
Exactly, he's actually creating on the fly. I love going to a rave and just having a good time with some "DJ" whose just playing through and mixing songs together, but I would LOVE to go see this guy.
I wouldnt call this oldschool techno. Just generic electronic music, and if you want more you can say it had idm inclinations. I would love a TED talk on classic techno and such.
RealMandraque I meant that genre boundaries are for fucking idiots. You made my point; cheers.
That said, and keeping with the stupid topic of genres; wtf is 'Generic electronic music'?
And CERN started to become a club. Lab/club

When you can get a crowd of intellects dancing to the sounds of air-conditioner music (new category?)...
I first met Tim in 2005-2006-ish at a club in Atlanta. He liked my dancing and asked me to be a choreographer for a project he was thinking of. Sadly for me, he moved on to another project.
I'm glad to see success is still in his cards!
Vortex...
Exile is a true artist. He knows his craft. Check out his videos for The Mouth and The Finger. He knows his tools intimately.
this dude needs to collaborate with aphex twin for sureee. They can make some crazy shit
and then Tim was arrested for inciting riots...
OM god. Quite brilliant. BC does get everywhere, too. Nice touch.
Best TED talk ever.
Think Tim did a great job and is a great performer. I'm certainly not the biggest glitch fan out there, but I can appreciate what he has done here, it what could of been a very inaccessible situation, and he got ppl up on stage, what more do you want from a dj ???
As for the sound, you have to look at it in context. When I used to be a strictly Junglist in the very early 90s Apex Twin didn't sound like music to me, now I listen to some of his sounds, and they sound mainstream, this sort of artefact sound will be mainstream too some day.
I get that this is UA-cam but people hating on this is ridiculous. Awesome stuff
Really interesting how sliders are preset to sounds, in some ways the chopping and so forth reminds of the old school Transformer scratching. This was very cool. Kind of felt like the opener for a Kraftwerk show,👏👏👏👏
TEDxBOILER ROOM
very good, good music and musical equipment, good video, encouragement with joy ..
Nice one Tim, so different of what is usual at TED.
My favorite TED video has been found!
CERN kills it on his new release called Spirit House!!!! amazing track!!!!
this is such a joy watching this guy, beeing a dj and be able to make ppls dance to what u do...very nice job. love it.
This was the most exquisitely nerdy thing I have ever seen.
This is fuckin unreal. I've never thought that you could do a live performance like this. Genius!
great to see people having fun..
He got these people dancing! Proper. Very proper :D
you know whats cool about this? this is better than most of the dj's who just press play and switch over.
One of the sickest live techno performances I've seen to date and I've been about a fair bit.
This is too much fun !!!
His sounds at the end was meant for listening not dancing. He lost the crowd because they could not anticipate the rhythmn and found it difficult to follow. Got caught up in creativity in abstract and forgot the human audience.
Good piece. i appreciate its creativity
I've watched many Ted Talks by now but I didn't expect to see something like this...
o.O
would love a dank vj on that mega screen pairing with the music !!
This is my favorite TED talk of all time lol
Exile is great! Love his work on the coolest Native Instruments plugins! I've been a huge fan of his ability to be extremely experiential but not totally boring or offputting like most experimentally created work. Also got some great ideas for my MIDI controller setup from watching him work.
how awesome is that?!? they all went up
Reminds me of the end to revenge of the nerds. Pure awesomesauce.
A M A Z I N G !
Brilliant
Roses are red
Violets are blue
This was awesome
And so are you
so sick!!! Madness
kool, freaking awesome dudes.
Crazy how his faders snap into place when he selects different tracks
i like how all the rude comments forget to notice that he said that "this is all improvised" call it whatever you want but id like to see you come up with something that actually flows.
Ive done music production and various software this guy is Sick how does he bloody do it so quick just in real control and beats and samples.
Exile Tim Ladies and gentlemen!
Awesome !
Music is expression of self and of mind ur opinions dont matter because people still appreciated this.
just amazing!
he makes awesome music just from simple sounds
Tim u r really unique :) i love your work and your face like a kid full of happyness says all :)
I'm a little late. But, wow! This is literal genius.
12:10 love that look on Tim's face when he notices he's made them dance!
Awesome homie. That's like music.
looks like so much fun!
Waaaoh !! Greaaat !
DJ Party , rocking !
This is pretty Cool :) Some good tunes right there
I loved every second of it
"TED STAGE INVATION,YEAH!!" FRICKIN AWSOMME 😎
This. Is. Awesome.
Amazing!
I liked the mysterious chanting more at the beginning tbh xD so mysterious 2:54 - 4:55
KING "I chop whatever I want" EXILE.
This was a beautiful thing
In 2005 I used those same BCR's and BCF's and 3-akai z-4's and one akai z-8 to make a rig because i was not excited by ableton and using a mac onstage. I use ableton to build parts and organize them for my samplers, but I still dont use a laptop onstage either.
imagine if elementary school classrooms across the world each had one of those setups. holy fuck that looks like fun
wow!!! IT SO fantastic
Not a fan of this music, but honor given to the man on the controls. I can not do this if I try. As much as the music repeats a lot, as you can see, it is very complex to dominate what this guy already accomplished over the time. Respect!!
Yes you can, just record a bunch of samples shouting stuff on a cheap mic, load them into a midi controller and start stretching them, cut them, bend them with all sort of audio effects plugins, until you get something that sounds logical..then practise is the key...
Performances like this make me want to quit making music, because I know I'll never be even 1/4 as good as Tim Exile.
TED Boiler Room! Yes.
Amazing.
I love this ...
I usually go to bed with Ted talk, but no, who's spinning in the house with a cup of tea? Me.
awesome!
amazing!!
that was wicked
amazing!
Nice one Tim, thanks for Flesh and some others, keep the punters jumping up and down.
Cern is LIT!
3:30 - 3:49 it sounded like the blade runner opening theme. amazing.
crazy amazing performance!!! Dude I love your creativity !!! tnx and hope to see and hear a lot more of your sounds!!! I enjoyed it very much!!
OMG! So unique live@
I've been a techno DJ for close to 20 years and this was truly inspiring. This clip has made me inspired and has made me excited about music in a way I haven't felt in over a decade. If it weren't for "life happening", I'd be locking myself away in the studio for the next several weeks and calling out of work a lot. Kudos, Tim Exile, and a sincere thank you.
Jared Ross you need to goto Native Instruments website and lookup the demo videos for the Mouth, Finger and a few other plugins. I'm not sure if they're actually coded by this dude but he does all the demos and it made me love making music again too! He just brings a level of fun to production that most people only really keep in their first few years of making music. Totally reminded me of what's important....having a blast and making something all your own while you do!
polarnj He "coded" it, yes. In Reaktor.
