- I'm not here to bring you the usual videos of Chernobyl, as there are plenty on youtube.
Only the bits that interest me (and hopefully you!) get uploaded. Mainly, these are the abandoned buildings containing OLD ELEVATORS.
This was our first elevator explore in this 10 floor apartment block.

THE MRMATTANDMRCHAY CHANNEL, established 2008:
I'm passionate about uploading quality and interesting videos for YOU, my audience.
What is my channel about? "Old lift machinery made interesting", old air-raid sirens, prehistoric alarm equipment. If "I" don't find it interesting ...then IT DOESN'T GET UPLOADED!
I always spend a lot of time editing my videos with animations, video in-sync with music and voice overs to make them this way.
My moto - "Quality NOT Quantity" - spending a month editing a video is not a rarity!
But without you, I'm nothing here. Thank you so much for watching.
...mrmattandmrchay is me (Matt) and my son Chay.
THANK YOU very much for watching :)
Thank you for your videos explaining motor rooms. I was invited by the owner of a building to see his 2 defunct 1925 Otis motor rooms and was able to tell him quite a bit about how they would have worked. Both cars were never modernized. The passenger still rang but didn't work. In fact he can't figure out how to get in to it as there is no shaft key hole in the door.
I have family who live in Russia (Naberezhnye Chelny) in a 10 story building that is ironically also fitted with a panel that has 12 floor selections. Their Stop and alarm bell buttons are exactly identical to these, and they have an additional black door-open button. But the floor selector buttons are circular white, in two columns, and light up when pressed. Their building was built in 1998, several years after the fall of the USSR, so I guess these kinds of panels are surplus that were sent throughout the CIS countries.
A radioactive copper has been salvaged....
DiodeGoneWild Hey! xD
For someone to go as far as to tear the small amount of copper out of all the relays, that's some dedicated thieving
I often wonder how much they would get for the wire looming on the back of the controller! It cannot be much!
Surely not worth all the effort for a little radioactive copper, it's a shame they trash everything in the process too
Worse still many soviet bloc countries actually used aluminium wiring. So what they stole was probably next to valueless.
I was in an elevator with my dad and right as we were going up we hear a loud metal pipe hit the bottom of the shaft. When we reached the top it was going to fast so our feet left the floor for a second. I’m pretty sure the elevator is closed now because the last time I was there (after the incident) it was sectioned off
Lifts don't fall down they fall up meaning the leveling was probably messed up.
@VERNONBLVJSCSONAVUNE On the 7 train and 6 train your wrong lifts fall up because the counterweight is heavier that the lift
@@bluelinedevelopmentofficial First, if the lift is having lot's of weight is then the counter weight then the lift will fall down.
@@bluelinedevelopmentofficial unless Lizzo steps in then that elevator is definitely falling down
this arguing-topic is now here for 3 years😂
Nice video man! Well done!
It gave me chills when you entered the elevator XD
I love the fox at the end though.
That looks like it still runs. Just a dab of oil here and there...
danielrichardbond yeah
danielrichardbond U a mechanic
Yea but Considering The Place were the Power is made to run it went Basically up in Radioactive Fumes and stopped working i doubts it works
What bout the electric motor it’s dead probably
There's a video of a tour of the actual reactor building, in which some tour group tries to use one of the elevators. It... sort of worked. But not completely.
Goodness me - this is some serious dedication to finding old lifts!
Hi Matt, I have only just discovered your wonderful channel, love your work and attention to detail, I’m off the binge another few episodes.
I'm gutted! I can't believe that the place has been vandalised!
For some reason i don't find it creepy at all when see the old elevators hanging where they were left, in between two floors and the old motor just decaying there. Just sort of sad. Everything in Chernobyl happened so fast and seeing things like elevators, that are always running and moving with people using them, frozen in time like this has some sort of impact. I don't know exactly how to describe it.
It's just a shame that the whole place has had 30 years of people trashing the place. There is not much left to look at. Still cool though!
@Drannamongtile KMZ, MLZ, MOELZ and UKM. Maybe there are some others.
Of course it looks like a brushed DC motor. Or at least it has the (massive!) commutator bars that lead me to believe that. Would have loved to have seen an intact motor room.
Nope, I'd say that's the entire rotor of a simple 3-phase AC induction (squirrel cage) motor.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squirrel-cage_rotor
It might have had double windings for levelling but not necessarily - some Eastern Bloc lifts gave you whiplash when they stopped! Last time I rode one was in Slovakia in 2007, a hotel built in the early 80s. These buildings being comparably tall the lift controls might have been a little more advanced though.
I thought no one could go into Chernobyl without supervision. How did vandals get there? I always thought everything there would've just been frozen in time.
In the first decade after the soviet union collapsed, the old bloc was the wild wes... errr east. Security was probably a lot more lax back then (if not, probably easily bribed), and everyone did anything to make *some* money after all the securities of the soviet union disappeared.
@@mfbfreak Besides, they still seem to find their way in. Have a look at "Kreosan English" UA-cam channel, these crazy bastards tried making one of those tower flats habitable again and it was vandalised fairly soon.
I would love to know exactly how dangerous spending time in an environment like that is to your health. I assume you carried a dosimeter with you during this. Fair play though for risking it to pursue your passions.
There is radioactivity everywhere on the ground and in the plants. However the highest amounts are still around the reactor. From what I have seen in many other videos elsewhere there are check stations to see if you have any residual radioactive material on the souls of your shoes and clothing.
These days cleanup efforts have been going very well, safe exposure time has been dramatically increased from the "scoop scoop run away" at the time of the explosion
Most places in Pripyat are safe (in terms of radioactivity), especially apartments. What you should definitely avoid is to breath some dust (easily made by moving things) and to go some specific places (eg : hospital / jupiter plant basement, red forest , cranes used to remove radioactive material, ...)
It was outside the extreme danger as long he was not there for more than 12 hours he would be fine
Wait! The cables aren't wound around the wheel of the lift motor and back down to the counterweight? What's holding the elevator up? Just the car brake?!?! That's thing's gonna fall down and go BOOM soon!!!
They are on the floor of the motor room, after falling or being taken off the wheel
What's the music that plays at the beginning? I love it!
Hi, the intro music, or the music at 0:16 for the video warning?
mrmattandmrchay The one at 0:16.
It's called 'Namaste', find it in youtube audio library.
What's the music that plays at the beginning?
@@mrmattandmrchay That one at 0:01
Excellent video! It's so sad to see the shape of the lift car and the motor room.
Literally an identical copy of the building my family lives in in Kyiv
Porably those 2 two buttons are door open and door close buttons
That is actually a 12 floor panel. It was cheaper for them to make one design than a specific one for each loft that way
For door open you can use STOP button. And you don't need door close button, because doors start closing as soos as you press floor button.
This Guy sure likes Elevators! LOL
Should have brought a winch and put the mechanism back together again :D There’s enough grease anyway. Good series.
Good idea, but I think the elevator cab would take a bit of time to put back together! :)
mrmattandmrchay Getting it rolling by hand again is the max possible i think, as literally nothing electronic related is left :-) And i wouldn’t risk my life in a ten stories high elevator pit in Pripyat. So as long as the car slides its ok no matter what the contents looks like ;)
@@Engineer9736 This one has all the concrete from the counterweight missing too.
So creepy !!!. Shame that the motor room and logic is gone. Would have been fantastis to have a look. What type of floor selector do you thinks this lifts could have used ?. Nice video.
Those shaft doors seem to be dangling.... the lower tracks have come loose. It looks heavily vandilized, that cab interiour looks smashed. I wonder how much of this is caused by the nuclear blast or if it is just natural decay with vandalization. The building structure still looks sound, but lift itself... I wouldn't want to lean against those shaft doors, it looks like they could come loose and fall down the shaft any moment. This place looks seriously surreal.
Absolutely none of it was caused by the blast. Quite simply there was not a nuclear explosion. The explosions (there were two) at the reactor were steam explosions that blew the reactor open and blew out the radioactive matter. It is 100% down to decay and vandals.
6:18 "STOP" shouldn't be in Russian? Interesting..
"STOP" in this context is international word that doesn't translate.
Except in Arabic because when I lived in the UAE stop signs had English and Arabic on them.
Stop in Russian is stop стоп
Sp00ky... And just in time for Halloween!
That is a COOL BUILDING!
Were you angry, disappointed and/or saddened that the lift and the motor room have been vandalised?
Was it a case of copper and/or scrap metal thieves? Alternatively was it a combination of age and stealing?
Good question and I will be revealing a little more in my "end of series report", so hope you don't mind waiting until then. I will certainly answer your question then :) (it's on the list)
@@mrmattandmrchay okay
(Shudders) Man that was creepy. Bugged me right out. Thanks for the up Matt. A good reminder why teak & green should never be seen. Shame the lift motor was in a poor state. Was it the rads causing the distemper and the rust. Or just age? Did you feel disturbed, bugged out or just unsure how many sieverts running through your system? In my younger days. I would have explored that place like a boss. Thankfully you took the time n trouble to satisfy our curiousities. Here us to the next one...
Darren Richardson About the sievierts.. I have stood right in front of the exploded reactor at the memorial. Indeed you spend a minute thinking about what invisible harmful stuff is shooting through your body at that moment. But they say it’s fine for 5 minutes, and the construction people are there for 9 hours a day or so. On a tour you cannot run for it anyway, so you have to choose for it before you book the trip.
Richard van Pukkem Thanks Richard. I say this cos about 2011. I had a 2nd rectal scan and xrays n stuff. (I now have a stoma after a bowel collapse). I was on the slap for a good half hour being prodded, poked and iradiated. When i left radiology and got in my dads car for the journey home. I really wanted to hurl and i had a headache and bad nausea. Obvs cos of the rads. But if i felt like that. Then i woukd had thought at Pripyat. I would feel similar. Was not the most comfortable of experiences 2bh.
Darren Richardson I don’t know if they use the same kind of radiation (alpha, beta, gamma, ..) and how the actual levels compare between Pripyat and a hospital scan. But maybe during a hospital treatment, stress might be also a factor to feel dizzy afterwards. When i have been in the dentist chair for an hour to drill a tooth i also feel a bit wobbly when i walk again afterwards ;-) In Chernobyl i did not feel or taste anything radiation related. They say during an airplane ride you receive more radiation than there. Good luck with the medical situation, i hope you will get better (soon) :-)
Could be all
This video is slightly creepy but still a good vid
I hope that's a compliment haha!! Thanks :)
Stunning video quality Matt.
Thanks! To be honest, my action camera doesn't do too well in low light, which is why I use my specially modified mini-tripod with the high output torch (or "flashlight" if you are from the US!)
The copper thieves must have had a good fire there, to burn of the insulation of the motor stator windings and the relays. Deterioration of the buildings over a 37 year period is noticeable.
what would happen if i went into the elevator cabin?
That has to be the most destroyed lift yet, bar cutting the cables and letting the car fall
You should explore the abandoned lifts in detroit sometime :D
That'd be cool, but I need some kind of reason to come to detroit first and it will need to be more than "to film lifts"! :)
@@mrmattandmrchay you should come to visit me
So sad to see that he’s beautiful, elevators know longer will ever run
How the heck does the cables come off the sheeve like that
I'm making a list of questions, so I will try and answer in my last "report" video :)
Other end of bearing housing is stolen so whole unit is angled at one way.
Once they vandals pulled the cap off the off side bearing shell, the axel and sheeve would have tipped out of alignment, and simultaneously disengaged from the brake on the motor shaft, the lift car would have raced up the shaft, the cables would have flung off the sheeve, would have been a wild ride, pitty the vandals didn’t have their limbs or heads caught in it.
The house is probably abandoned, what a shame!!
I'm not sure why I was so surprised to see pit buffers
You could get a better view of the buttons by taking out the wall they are on I mean not stealing it or anything like that oh and BTW it's crazy that the ropes are still connected to the car despite it not being on the first floor
Curious about the single call buttons... you only get the elevator if you're going down? Or... it stops for you going both ways?
The landing call buttons are very likely to be wired to only stop a lift that's travelling in the down direction (as people on the upper floors will most likely be going down) and it will ignore a lift going up. Whereas the CAR call buttons will stop the lift if it's going up or down.
This elevator can hold only one call. Call buttons can't stop car if it's moving. You can use them only if no one else uses this elevator.
Do you know how much of the damage is from vandalism and how much is natural decay (possibly accelerated by radiation)? I assume there has been at least some vandalism, but I don't think I saw any graffiti (it may have been people stealing valuable metals such as copper wiring?). I wonder if the cab fell apart because of the machine being destroyed, which would have possibly caused a brief freefall of the car & counterweight.
Are most elevators in Pripyat so destroyed? Or is this one particularly bad compared to others, and some are more intact (ropes still going over the sheave, cabs relatively intact)?
Does it still run?
sure it will work, u just have to plug in the power and everything is ok
Interesting how the lift was left on the top floor last. I would think with people evacuating it would be on the bottom floor.
It's been freefallen to the top floor (the counterweight is heavier than the car so if would "fall" upwards if the brake was released or damaged)
0:33 why you censored these guys? Are they mutants?
One was the tour guide, the other was Morthren. Neither wanted to appear in the video by choice.
@@mrmattandmrchay oh, thanks, i liked this by the way :)
cool lift video mrmatt
Hallo Kollege, danke für das Video! Das sind die Anlagen, die man sonst nicht zu Gesicht bekommt, weil sie leider niemanden interessieren... Daumen Hoch! Grüße
Dont worry the kerosean channel will probably start it up again
Dear mrmattandmrchay here in belgium i have an old rip off pickerings it still works but i cant ride it beqause its too dangerous and disclaimer the motor room has the key on it by the way love your vids man
Why Everyone Do This...?
sad...
Why are abandoned buildings unsafe
The elevator is out of control
WEll, they were thorough!
2 button missing
I wonder why the bottom on the elevator doors are broken,
Hmmmm
I throughed the Elevator was falling but ist was stuck and broken
Woodgrain doors👌
Dono if its just me but i am petrified of lift shafts but not inside a lift and I’m not scared of heights or claustrophobic never have understood it any information why much appreciated 😳👍
I guess because being in the lift shaft you see the reality - the massive drop, and the potential danger if the lift were to fall? I bet if the lift had a transparent floor then it would be the same fear when riding in the lift as well. Just an idea.
@@mrmattandmrchay Now there is an idea, a lift with a glass floor...
Sooooo sad for the nice elevator😑
Wonder how the lift car was not on the ground floor from when the town was evacuated. Surely the last people leaving would have taken the lift down to ground and left if there? Unless they called the lift got tired waiting and took the stairs and the lift arrived after they had taken the stairs down.
ELPaso1990TX The day the people got evacuated was surely not the last functional day for this lift. Even the people who demolished the lift, possibly decades later, might have been turning it manually for some random reason, before taking the bolts off the pulley axle :)
Since the motor and pulley have been ripped apart they won't be providing any braking, and any brakes on the car are most likely to be knackered, so the concrete counterweight will have dropped to the bottom of the shaft, pulling the lift car to the top I suspect.
The counterweight is heavier than the lift car, so once the brake is released (by vandals/metal thieves most likely), the car will travel to the top of the shaft.
Impressive
The motor is still intact so the car should move just by turning the gear on the motor..
I always had a fear about those old Soviet buildings.
As a kid, I wouldn't go near anything like this, but now I love it!
Hello Dear mrmattandmrchay. i've been watching your channel about 1year ago and i seen a lot of old elevators and interesting videos, i saw a lot of modernised elevators in you videos, and i just wanted to say if you want to look after old, not modernised lifts, just search on youtube after hungarian lifts, There are some not a popular lift makers like Ganz, or lifon orca, but there are a lot of otis and schindler elevators too
greetings from hungary
-by an interested viewer(sorry for bad english)
+Szopogató Halacska Hey... thanks for your message. I will certainly look these guys up :) Thanks for watching my videos and your english is perfect
Excellent. Subscribed.
+Paul Potter Cool thanks for the sub :) glad you liked it
Lift is Brocken
10 stories and only one elevator?
yep!
and they left the lift panel. thats sad.
By the way, anyone who likes Chernobyl and creepy stuff, watch the movie Chernobyl Diaries. Brilliant movie, my neckhair stood straight up at 5 in the morning while watching it :D
yeah, I started watching that until the bear came running across the corridor! (Chay didn't want to watch anymore after that!) Haven't finished watching it yet, but I hear that wasn't filmed in Chernobyl though
mrmattandmrchay Yes, they show a whole different ferris wheel in the movie. It was a set i think indeed. Still cool though.
Hmm too bad some parts are missing. Otherwise you could have turned on the (missing) power :-P
what was those boxes with wires phone line boxes?
Y did u touch the radioactive button u might get sick
crystal beaudette If you don’t know anything about the subject, why would you tell such warnings to people who do know a lot of technical things? Buttons don’t contain moisture and therefor cannot be radioactive 31 years after the accident anymore. Only things like wet moss outside have high levels of radiation.
You would have thought this may still be in a nice way not rob for copper
:) yup! Thanks for the comment
10 floor elevator motor room
Haha. Kreosan was exactly there too.
It looks bad in the elevator shaft
What the text isn't cyrillic? Was that a soviet elevator standard to have the user texts in an enemy language
The generic words such as "STOP" are international and don't translate.
Wow nice
Who destroyed that elevator?
Its been exploited the elevator died due in a disaster.
Vandals and people who strip the copper and sell it
I wonder what this lift is branded...Express maybe idk
Probably KMZ. It's a typical vintage Soviet era lift.
Its little bit funny for the ("thole") motor is ripped off
Imagine a ghost came out in this building
Look inside the apartments... they must've left all of their stuff there...
People have been messing through all the flats for 31 years. Nothing is original anymore :) It's all smashed around and broken.
What's the song at 0:01?
Hi, this was from a documentary on the discovery channel called 'Chernobyl - a natural history'. It went through the natural life (animals that live there today), people, and how life continues as normal in the exclusion zone. The music was made by the daughter of the film producer and was used for the edits at the end of the documentary. Not sure it has a name, but I had special permission to use it.
god it hurts my brain when people use Cyrillic so wrongly, pls dont be one of those people that does that
Do you like elevators?
OLD LIFT!
cool
don't touch the button; it's RADIO ACTIVE! 😱
10 floor
This is very danger
can i have the exact location?
I did have a quick look on google maps timeline to see if it was recorded, as this was back in 2018. But the map showed only the main locations we went to. So I'm not going to be able to pin-point exactly where this was.
@@mrmattandmrchay alright, thank you for the response, if anything, keep me updated. im trying to find this mummified dog i found in the internet . like in a kitchen with green paint.
Pripyat is very close to being a city - it's a vast area, hundreds of apartment blocks and building (see it on google maps). It used to have 3 swimming pools! You're be very lucky to find that, well, not without additional info.
@@mrmattandmrchay i want you to bring the series back, until you find the mummified dog, trust me, im curious and it once caused me trauma when i was younger, now i feel interested in the topic, weirdly.
@@mrmattandmrchay luckily, i found the location of the building you explored in this video, on google earth, labelled "zhytlovyy budynok" by matching the exact shape of the building with this one

Soviet lift that's broken.
