    This is the first year I’m using drip irrigation and I’m going crazy with excitement!!! I feel like a professional, and the thought of never dragging around my hose and mowing and moving my hose again...and buying 300ft of hose and dragging it around...blah blah blah, I’m done! It’s like magic! Got it all installed yesterday, it’s all working, mulched, it was a wildly successful day. I learned from the best!

      Vera Wsllace some trees have very deep roots, others like my maples have roots closer to the surface. I have small types of hostas, heucheras, and alliums planted under a Northwoods maple and they are doing well. Research online or in a gardening book on trees to see how your tree grows. Good luck and have fun.

    Those hostas look pretty root-bound and I was surprised you didn't feel you needed to do more root pruning before planting? Gorgeous though and incredible size of leaves. Also thinking since they stand so much higher above the ground that might help reduce the slug damage. I always use Deadline to make rings around my hostas just as they are coming up in the spring. It seems to really work for most of the season. I do always put mulch over the top so my dogs aren't attracted to it. Then if I need anything more during the season I use a pet-safe slug killer granule.

    Question: my neighbor told me that the variegated varieties can tolerate more sun than the pure green varieties. What is your experience? I have some pure green hostas in a western location and they looked so beat up at the end of the summer when we moved in. Wondering if I should move them. Also, I love the face! I think a touch of whimsey is important in a home or garden so that it shows you're not taking yourself too seriously. I also think it will be something Benjamin remembers from growing up in your home. Thanks for all you do!

    • @dc0145a
      @dc0145a 4 роки тому +4

      Monica, my absolute favorite sun tolerant is an 'oldie' but definite 'goodie' Royal Standard. Hostas aren't typically known for their blooms. BUT, Royal Standard doesn't disappoint! Fragrant! I can't say enough about this plant. Yes, it's solid green, but with it's vase shape and those gorgeous fragrant flowers, this is one hosta I won't be without. And bonus, hummingbirds and my honeybees love the flowers. Mine gets morning sun 8a - noon; shade noon - 3p. Then late after sun 3p til dusk.

    • @lancequalmann5170

      I’ve had variegated hostas in full sun in a flower bed next to our pool for over 20 yrs now and they continue to thrive. Several plants were given to me by my dad in the mid 70’s ( he died in ‘91) so they always remind me of him, and this is the third house of mine that they have lived at, I just continue to divide them every few years, keep some, give some away, and they love it.

    • @trace9657
      @trace9657 4 роки тому +3

      @@janevt.5914 I have a few things from people I have lost as well. It keeps the people of the past with you in a good way.
      I cut my first irises off from my Aunt Nezzie's and my grandma's irises when I was in my twenties. They had both moved their's from their mother's "homeplace" when they were young. So I have always considered my irises as "great grandma's," and she passed before I was born. I just let them spread out and dig out the centers when they start dying off in the middle. I moved in 2017 and I brought a bunch with me, so I still have my lineage of strong, quirky women following me around.

Can I put in a plea to please keep the face on the tree as it is so fun and whimsical so I hope Aaron doesn't really take it down. You have little pockets of whimsy in your garden and I think this one is one of the best as it reminds me a bit of the Green Man plaques that you see in gardens.Thank you again for the inspiration and if I can find a place and get some of these Hosta's I would love to try growing them.

    On your new brick pathway...how about a fancy medallion(green man or leaf man) on the ground in the center of your circle? Then add an upright feature (columns, topiaries, urns) on each side of the walkway, marking the entrance and exit points of the new brick walk.

    My mulch needs mowing, too. How much does Benjamin charge?
    This is now my new favorite hosta. Those leaves! Something about their texture up against the scruffy bark of that juniper, it's just right. ~ Lisa

    I was just going to ask about what you do about slugs, but you answered that already! 😂 I'll have to let my mom know, slugs just love her hostas in her garden

    Love watching your videos, they remind me that spring might actually show its face here in Vermont sooner or later. My hostas are about an inch tall right now and just that excited me! We’re still getting snow on occasion! Benjamin is getting so big, it’s such a pleasure to see him in the videos. 💐🌸💐

    One of my favorite hostas! They look great there, can't wait to see the ferns you plant in there as well, another perennial favorite of mine.

    thank you Benjamin for mowing the dirt ... so cute! my neighbors boy loves it when i leaf blow, he had to get a leaf blower toy, i think it blows bubbles??! so cute. i love it when he and Russell steal the whole show!!! lucky you to have hostas ...not here ... deer will eat them and it is silly to feed them on purpose.
