How to Mount an Elk in 60 Seconds!

- I promise it isn’t as easy as it looks! Took the better part of 2 days to just get this thing on the form. It’s a big job for a whitetail guy.

Thought this was gonna be a tutorial video of how to climb on top of a live elk… I guess I’ll keep searching
😂😂😂😂 me too
Me three 🤣
Us dirtbags gotta stick together 😜
Same exact thought lol
“Climb on”???
Uhhhh
@@RC-fp1tl Yeah, like mounting a horse, jumping/climbing on its back. I also thought it was about mounting one... I instantly clicked on the video 😂😂😂
I know next to nothing about taxidermy, so I had no idea these "full body" mounts were actually just models underneath with the hide and antlers plastered on top! I kinda just assumed they preserved the whole damn animal! The fact you have to do all this modeling work and it looks so realistic is very impressive!
Glad you found it interesting and learned something new! Thanks for the kind words!
I had a teacher when I was in middle school tell the class hunting was wasteful because a mount wastes all the meat. He was very surprised this was the process.
@@aaronshippelhoute5011I love when teachers say patently false things but refuse to even entertain the idea that they might be wrong
@officialelonmuskyoutubecha4905 to his credit, he was totally open to being told what actually happens. I just hope he hadn't told too many kids that beforehand.
@@aaronshippelhoute5011how would a mount waste “all” the meat? Teachers be crazy, nobody’s eating the head of a deer. I will agree tho, I have dogs that feel like I “wasted” a deer by not giving them every last scrap antlers and all 😂
I’m a taxidermist, been in the game for a while now and have done a few elk, I prefer a short incision, less sewing and less room for error, looks awesome dude good job
This is how taxidermists should market themselves. Cool work!
Lol! I don't know what I was thinking, but at first I thought he was going to mount the elk like you would mount a horse to ride.
And I was like, "Why would you bring the elk inside to ride it?"
That's what I get for watching UA-cam at 1am.
Awesome skills
Great craftsmanship love it!
Thanks! Really appreciate it!
So I did not know there was a fake form for those things. So just the antlers and skin are real. I never knew that before thank you fo sharing! ❤
Looks almost like it's going to bugle. Of course I expect that if it did while in the shop, it would be time to close up and cleanse with fire.
Marvelous work.
In the beginning just before the antlers go on, notice how dinosaur the model looks.
Looks like a lot of time and patience goes into doing a mount. Keep up the hard work.
Taxidermy has always been fascinating to me. How you can take a lifeless animal and make it look alive. Absolute art at its finest.
awesome! im getting my first mount this year on a huge buck i harvested. cant wait
You make this look easy like it only takes you a day to do it. Yet 8 months later I’m still waiting for my shoulder mount to come back
4 months is nothing. You can start whining at the 2 year mark
The mounting can go decently quickly. But Treating the hide takes a long time. Especially if there are orders before you(which there always is).
Man... I came here looking to learn how to grapple its antlers while I get on its back.....
The struggle is real....
Good lord, I thought I was clicking into a video of a guy getting onto an elk 💀 Ngl I find the skin just sitting there on it before being tightened onto the model haunting- I always thought the whole head was somehow preserved! I definitely could never get into a profession like this. No shade on you tho, it's honestly very impressive work your doing! Not what I was expecting to see but I got to learn something today.
I wish i could do this you’ve got to have years of practice to actually get mounts that look this good
Beautiful craftsmanship ❤ that is an art form.
Today I learned how taxidermists make the mounted heads. This is not what I expected at all but it’s still very cool.
I have many taxidermy pieces, but still so interesting to see how it works.
woww nice to see you with this great 60 second ALK ❤❤❤❤
I always thought taxidermy were real skulls and bones as a kid. Even the eyes. 😂
Looks awesome, great job! Hope to see more shorts and full videos like this!
Aww he’s a cutie❤
Cool work man! How much for a whitetail head only? Love the work
We get $550 for whitetail shoulder mounts
@@RidgeHunterOutdoorswow that's gonna suck. I am going hunting next week and I've never done the mount but I want to
@MKandpets
Did you think it was going to be 39.95? This is a pro with years of experience, knowledge of anatomy, and talent. You're not pulling this off in your parent's carport.
@@medicbabe2ID no I know it's a lot of work. I've done plenty of skinning and tanning with no mount and that alone is very time consuming. I think you misunderstood what I said. I am not saying that it is overpriced, but it is a lot of money. It's actually probably a pretty decent price but $550 is still a lot of money for me.
@@medicbabe2IDthat’s a dick response were literally just asking calm down. Your ass probably can’t shoot a deer so I don’t want to hear it boy.
I love elk, theure so fluify and adorable 🥰
This is so cool!It looks like the real thing!I thought they just perserved it 😂
How long does it usually take you to finish it?
When we get started on one usually 4-6 weeks
This is definitely not how I thought taxidermy worked……it’s *MUCH* better than the scenario my brain made up - based on nothing. I’m relieved to discover it looks a lot like reupholstering a couch, rather than what Hannibal Lecter’s neocortex looks like.
It's a wonderful deer! No eök, but that doesn't matter, it's just a wonderful art work!
EPIC talent!!
Talk about artists!
Nice job.
Awesome
Something ive always wanted to ask. Why doesn't the finished trophy ever look as big as the actual animal when it was alive ?
Not sure why that would be. We always measure to make sure the forms are the correct size and often get them just a little too big and stretch the hide as needed.
Because hunters have a distorted view/memory of how big their deer was. Most pictures are taken with the head held up which bunches the muscles unnaturally adding to this phenomenon....also some taxidermists or tanneries don't do the greatest job of shaving the skin down nice and thin so it doesn't stretch as much. It's some of both. If you thin well enough you can actually make one bigger than it was measured prior to skinning.
Grooming is another issue. Many mounts the hair is brushed down with very little loft to it unlike a live animal.
Very cool 😊
The shop that I work in, we will use 4IB foam to hold the form together, scratch it and put the glue on and whatnot. We also bonds the skull plate to the form and use like 4inch lags on elk, rams, etc. nice work👍
"We're doing an elk today, they actually come in two pieces cause they're so big when they ship them". As someone who just landed on this short and knows nothing about taxidermy that line had me cracking up. My brain 🧠 thought "two pieces , an elk, what?!?" Until my idiot self caught up to my brain and realized what he was explaining. 😅 Yep I'm that idiot. Happy Holidays everyone.
Amazing
*"How to mount an elk in 60 seconds"*
(teenage elk with his pants down): "oh yeah, here we go..."
Holy shit. I hate you for giving me this mental image - Reminds me of some Family Guy gag
How do you determine the chest size compared to the one actually shot? I mean let’s say the bill you made is smaller then the one actually shot? Does a customer complain?
They take measurements before they cape the bull so we know exactly what size forms to order!
Do the screws ever splint the antler plate?
Nope. We pre-drill the holes to avoid that very thing
Wow
Now I understand why there so expensive!, amazing work though👍
Which parts require paint?
Nose and eyes. Some paint the ears as well
Omg wait a minute… so many questions
1. Is this modern taxidermy or classic to some degree, I always assumed they were stuffed??
2. How does one size mold fit them all or can you order multiple sizes? How do you know what size?
3. Holy shit man
4. Can you order or have more dynamic poses?
5. How would it be different for a full body hide?
1. This is the modern practice yes. It did used to be quite a bit different.
2. We take measurements from the animal and order the forms sized accordingly.
3. 🤷🏼♂️
4. There are a lot of different poses available yes.
5. The full body mounts are similar in principle. They would just be skinned off the animal differently and sewn back up on the underneath/back side
@@RidgeHunterOutdoors thank you very much for the responses, super impressive work and I love the view into how these are made
Oha wow it is amazing
I think the fdi is watching us
It worked
Not
MAESTRO!!!!
Gracias!
Nice 3rds!

I question I’ve always had is how do you prevent the skin from decaying? So these last a long time.
There are different tanning processes that preserve the hides
What kind of clay do you use?
One is called critter clay and the other is just basic wet clay.
About elk having big heads yeah no kidding really. You are 3 times the size of a whitetail-deer or a mule deer. 😊
I thought it was choclate😂
Use a little less clay on your eyes. You will thank me later. Also remember where your high point and low point need to be on your eye
I was thinking the same thing
Instructions unclear. I’ve been wifed up by an Elk and he keeps calling me a stupid cow.
Where is pt 2?
Can you believe I still thought we had to hang them as they are?😂😂
And yet my whitetail’s been taking over 10 months now
Don’t know who your taxidermist is but 10-12 month turn around is pretty average I would think. Even above average in certain areas and depending on the type of shop.
Where I'm at was like 2 years for my bear finally got it
Don't know much about taxidermy but doesn't it take time to age the hide plus the amount of volume the shop has?
I love this stuff, but you have to admit if you step away and look at it from afar.......humans really do some weird shit😂😂😂
Yeah, when he first put the skin on and it was all loose on the face, I was thinking, "This is something a psycho would do" 😂😂😂
Wow that’s actually really cool the world elk or should I can do that but my dad are you trying to help but my dogs allowed he is right I could do that
How do you get it the right size?
The hide is measured while still on the animal
Euro mount for the win
No joke. Everytime I kill a buck that skull is hanging on my wall 2 days later for free.👍
Agreed
Hunters really love stuffed animals
The face just hanging off the model beneath us so creepy, it reminds me of Silence of the Lambs somehow. No hate. This is cool but WOW is it ever creepy also!
People who know it didn’t take one minute because he cut some parts of the video
Yo i was the 30 000th Like!
My name is Lance can you give me tips to being a taxidermist
They come in two places? I usually just come in a box…
how long does the whole process take i know for my whitetail deer it took 3 years for my shoulder mount 😅
It varies depending on taxidermist but we usually get ours turned out in 10-12 months
The issue isn't the taxidermist, it's supply chain issues. And the tanners are backed up like crazy. By the time you drop your animal off, it's caped, fleshed and salted you've got a few days into it.
Then it waits for the tanner to pick it up, that could be a month. Then it takes a minimum 3 months to get your skin back. Pending you've already chosen a postion. Then if the glass eyes are on back order, which alot of animals are at the moment then you've got another month or two of waiting.
If you got anything sent to a taxi during covid, it did slow down things to the point that you'd see a 2-3 year turn around simply due to supplies and man power. It really hit the taxidermist. And im a miner by trade.
Dunno who tf you're with that takes 3 years. Took my taxidermist 8 months for 2 heads.
the expression of the skin in the thumbnail is cracking me the fuck up lmao
From behind unless your from San Francisco down below
Do you ever put the eyes in after the hyde?
I do not
Right in the screw hole 😂
You want to do my 5 x 5 white tail?
Rosevelt elk?
I live in that town
Who is that for?
PUUUTTTTSSSS THE LOTION ON DEE SKIN, OR YOU SHALL GET DE HOSE AGAIN!!!
How long does it take?❤
Depends on drying time but usually 3-4 weeks after starting
Skinwalker... paul walker but only skin
Do you make moose ones if you do can you sale me one ❤😢❤
Everybody knows to "Mount an Elk" you get it cornered and tied up and a bridal and bit on it...
.then get the saddle pad on then the saddle all on and tightened up then grab a hunk of reins and saddle horn then put your foot in the.....ah.....you know....the part you step into and up with .....?...
What's it called....im drawing a blank here.....😮😅😊😂
is it not stirrup? 😂
60 second then why can't I get mine till next year
I feel like the title of this video could be taken waaaaaaaaaaay out of context.
It puts the lotion on its hide.
Can I have it?
Could you do a horse?
I know exactly how this place smells..
The hide paste
It's a paste......
For the hide
Very descriptive
does this hurt the animal
I always forget how damn big elk are 😂
Buffalo Bill Wildlife Version 😅
How does this take like a year and a half to complete
It doesn’t take that long to do one. The wait is usually due to the number of pieces any given taxidermist has to do in a year
Didn’t know you were taxidermist
Yep. Keeps us busy in the summer time
Not the video I was expecting based on the title
Do they still smell ?
They definitely have a unique smell but it is not strong at all and is not bad either. We wash all the mounts and spray them with solutions to eliminate any bad odor
"I'm gonna kill an animal, then put it in a lifelike pose...so I brag I killed it."
Are those real elk ears and elk skin?
Yes they are!
Do you do wolf taxidermy ?
I have not done any wolves
@@RidgeHunterOutdoors that's to bad I'm looking for a fully taxidermyed wolf to buy
@@LonewolfBrokeneagle hope you find one!
What vegans think we would do after we eat meat 🍖
Paint it?
Yup! The color on the nose and eyes fades and has to be painted to bring it back to its natural look!
