Classic. Fair bit younger than you guys, this era of metalcore really shaped my taste in my early teens - I was 9 when this album came out lol, think I started listening to them closer to the release of Overcome in 2008. Judson might enjoy Chiron off that album. I look back at albums from this era from bands like Killswitch, As I Lay Dying, Trivium, A7X, Bullet For My Valentine, August Burns Red, etc fondly, but after a certain point the scene did start to feel a bit formulaic and “soft” for lack of a better term, especially as I got exposed to stuff like Periphery’s debut album, All Shall Perish, and Black Dahlia’s Nocturnal/Deflorate, which had a lot more going on and broadened my horizons quite a bit. I kept listening to metalcore for a long while though as it was generally easier for me to wrap my head and hands around as a guitarist, haha.
We saw these guys in Detroit in probably 2008-9ish i dont remember. Phil got down on the edge of the stage mid song, and some guy jumped up and tried to grab his hat off his head. Phil popped his ass square in the face without stopping singing. It was awesome
This is definitely an iconic song, but part of me wishes he had heard Six. Chiron would be my next choice for him to return to. The bridge is just a masterclass that represents Oli at his finest.
I saw ATR open for Dragonforce at the Palladium in Worcester, MA in 2006 or 7, when they were promoting this album. The album artwork was their backdrop. I was blown away and became an instant fan. They were my introduction to metalcore… definitely a pivotal moment in my exploration of metal 🤘🏻
Ah, the Palladium, drove down their from north of the border in 2007 to see Animosity, HORSE the Band, and BTBAM upstairs on Friday, then CKY, GWAR, and Cradle of Filth downstairs on Saturday. What an amazing weekend of music and adored that venue!
Philip joined us in the crowd at the Exit /In in Nashville as Chimaira played their set. Back during this album's tour. We got some really funny pics. Years later, saw them at Rockettown with KSE and walking out to the lobby, he was behind one of the doors, holding it for the crowd and nobody but me and my buddy noticed him(short guy was good at blending in lol) We reminisced and he remembered us at the Exit/In show. Good times 🤘
Good stuff. I used to cover a lot of songs from this album and This Darkened Heart and it’s always been a staple in my metalcore lineup. I haven’t listened to it in quite some time so this brings me back, and I can totally relate to Judson’s take on relating eras to musical motif’s prevalent in that time.
This was my introduction to metalcore. I was a little late to the game, but I played them on Rock Band and was blown away. They had Six and Chiron and Two Weeks, all amazing songs. Two Weeks is prob their most popular song, but unfortunately was played out by my local radio station 🫤
I was at Bonaroo in 2002. String Cheese Incident, Old Crow Medicine show and Bella Fleck were just incredible to watch. To be fair, my memory of that festival is rather hazy shall we say.
Love this Band and your channel! All That Remains is actually coming out with a new album soon and has a couple new singles that may be worth reacting to. Keep up the great work!
Saw them in 08 at Mayhem Festival what's a good show and Ollie was a legend. My first experience live and he got me into that show as soon as they came out
FACTS about Spotify's playlists. Nik Nocturnal goes over them a lot and I'm always scratching my head at who they have on there. I've just been sticking to keeping an eye on Angry Metal Guy's reviews for new releases. The randomized stuff that plays after an album playlist is concluded is equally terrible - I ALWAYS get a combination of 1-2 minute intro or interlude songs, instrumentals, 1 in 5 or so actual songs, and the same ~10 or so bands. I've found exactly one new band I like through that method.
the key is to do this method starting with lesser known bands; the bigger the band the bigger the recommendations following on from them will be. If you listen to random after metallica, you'll get bands like Megadeth and Sepultura. Listen to random after something like Gama Bomb and you're more likely to get more niche recommendations
Freaking wonderful intro. This was a great chat guys, I really enjoyed it! It makes so much sense that many grunge lovers would turn their nose up to the emerging Linkin Park type music in the 00s. They both, I think, appeal to somewhat the same emotional pits, but the latter is a lot less poetic in its lyrical construction and more accessible musically. Transitioning from the introverted grunge to a more extroverted 00s Linkin Park type music must’ve been weird - or impossible. That’s how I see it all anyways. The music we initially discover on our own as young kids has a funny way of sticking around in our minds, and as Richard says, we may be a little insecure about it. I just know that I can’t be held accountable for the alternative rock kid me chose to have on my iPod in the mid/late 00s. Thankful we don’t stop developing at 11.
I cant speak for heavy metal, but the early to mid 2000's was peak in my musical taste. most of my favorite albums came out then. MCR's 'Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge', Blink-182 self titled album, Panic at the Disco's 'A Fever You Cant Sweat Out', Linkin Park's 'Meteora' & 'Hybrid Theory', and Senses Fail's 'Let It Enfold You' all came out in that time. No-skip albums imo
Shannon Lucas was on this album, he then went on to record 3 albums with The Black Dahlia Murder. Jason Bittner was the Shadows Fall (Who Phil was also a part of their band originally) drummer.
This era was rough all around I think. I kinda, sorta dug on these guys, Trivium and a couple others. I tinkered around with melodic death and trash out of Sweden, Norway and such. But then I clicked hard with Devin Townsend's stuff, Strapping Young Lad and the Devin Townsend band. At the same time I started exploring post metal and got super hooked on The Gathering, Isis and folks like that. Then I started exploring Mike Patton's stuff beyond Faith No More and that just sent me off on a WILD avantgarde tangent that I'm still way deep into.
hey guys. I love your disscussion's about music, and not only about the particular song. Thas real great. Why not doing some videos with some deeptalk about music in genereal. Dosn't matter of some genres, songstucturs and so on. Would be cool to see some videos. And if you wannt to hear some knew undiscovered stuff for you I can give you some real cool bands from Switzerland like Kassoghta, Stortrgn, Shadowfalls, Infinitas, Perthness, Deep Sun, Requiem, Gurd, or one or two of the biggest like Eluveitie, Samael or Tryptikon. would e cool to see you reacting to one of them once. Greetings and cheers
On the subject of band "selling out/getting popular" i'd say there's is 2 point of view that I hear alot. One say's: "it's not he same anymore". The other's: "This band doesn't deserve it all theyre song are the same". But then there"s the band trying to make good music. I won't say there's not any band that never maid concession, but a band playing something they don't enjouy won't last long.
Fellas, dont know if youve checked out a band called Erra? They've been around for years, but have some newer material that absolutely rocks. Itd be cool to see an Erra video on here. Also, Tesseract or Caligula's Horse would be cool to see. Cheers!
Please react to Into Eternity next, a truly wonderful band with Stu Block on vocals and Tim Roth on guitar. "Severe Emotional Distress" is a great song to react to.
Musically I believe the album "This Darkened Heart" is more interesting for a guy like him. For example the solo and harmonies in "I Die In Digress", or the dissonant progression of the same titles song "The Darkened Heart". This Calling is pretty simple and not really musically interesting. Hope you get to more of the stuff from that era, like "THE HAUNTED" (for example "Demon Eyes" instrumental, or Deadhead.) But also the whole Gotheburg scene should be interesting (you could explain how Gotheburg became the cradle of that kind of music).
If you guys want to react a couple bands that are pushing the boundaries in modern metal, I would check out Aviations and Reliqa. I think Judson will enjoy how the piano is utilized in Aviations music.
Phil is a bit reeeal cooky now n days but, still love his vocals on this album and the previous..and the new stuff is sounding sweet with anthony n jason. I'm 33, so this was MY IIISH when it came out
I always considered NWOAHM being a reaction to Nu Metal, reclaiming the fast riffing and volcanic guitar solos of 80s/90s metal, but adding guttural vocals and blast beats. I'm not them so I'll never know, but that's how it always felt to me. Sure it's a bit formulaic, but there are only so many ways you can grow a tree and have it not end up looking like a tree
Hello, if you like the piano or keyboard, you should react to one of the best Argentine rock composers "Charly Garcia - Adela en el carrousell". Or if not the best that is Luis Alberto Spinetta with his band "Spinetta Jade- Alma de Diamante"
About the whole sellout debate: I think it's just people, fans, wanting to feel superior to non-fans. "I know this band! They're great! You don't know them? Well sucks to be you!" - and when a band "sells out", your superiority goes away and THAT is what people don't like. If after "selling out" a band's music style doesn't change and yet some fans turn away, these fans didn't like the band in the first place but they liked knowing a band that other people didn't.
Nah it's not that, or may be partly that but not entirely. The thing is when bands "sell out" they usually lose the uniqueness and originality that made them great in the first place to appeal to a greater audience, so fans are obviously disappointed that they lost their edge.
Metal, punk, and music fans as a whole really make no sense. There is so much gatekeeping and idiocy its insane. Imagine hating a movie director because their most recent movie was a worldwide success. Like dont diminish someone elses enjoyment because you have a problem with the band you arent in, playing the music you didnt write.
Another angle to look at: Metallica for example played a certain type of music that people related to. They definitely changed which should be full okay in the artistic freedom sense. But the people that related to that music now don’t relate to it and tend to say they sold out but it’s really just they don’t like it. My specific opinion usually falls closer to the more people like something the more I don’t. Not because I’m trying to be edgy but writing in traditional formulas tends to make music stale to me. I can still see the artistic skill and ability to reach people but it becomes to formulaic to me. Sorry rant over.
This conversation is full of contradictions. He just talked for 30 minutes but said absolutely nothing. This song was written almost 25 years ago. What fucking formula are they following? Just curious. It's called a GENRE. Every GENRE has properties that make it distinct. ATR is a metalcore. Obviously if you are listening to metalcore, it's going to fucking sound like metalcore. This song is literally one of the songs that created the metalcore genre. To say this song is part of a formula is strange and it's insulting to the intelligence of the people that like it. Are we too stupid to listen to ''real'' music? Are we too simple to see this ''formula''? Are we being tricked by labels making fake music by using a formula?
Once a band grows to commercialism it loses the soul in the music, some can hear/ feel it, some do not... that is why people leave certain bands after a while.
It was such a shame that All That Remains became, I guess, 2 albums after this one. We started to hear a lot more just clean/radio/pop type of songs, and i just didn't like it at all. Completely dropped from following the band. At least their last album came back to the good old style.
Holy s*** still listening and your rant about Spotify is exactly why every year I cancel. I get tired of listening to the same bs... The playlist are trash I never hear anything new that isn't radio driven to an extent and just not my style. I think Pandora idea is amazing how it is trying to narrow it down and predict what you're going to like but whatever they started that was really accurate, Spotify and tidal have been crap I hear the same songs constantly if I let it
Another angle to look at: Metallica for example played a certain type of music that people related to. They definitely changed which should be full okay in the artistic freedom sense. But the people that related to that music now don’t relate to it and tend to say they sold out but it’s really just they don’t like it. Piano intro was excellent. I love The Cranberries and that song especially.
So do I!
Some old In Flames would be good to show to Judson
agreed. Clayman is a masterpiece, probably my favourite melodeath album.

The guitar tone, that guitar solo. The guitar rhythm. Say what you want about Phil's vocals. Can go either way for sure
This song still slaps hard af.
man that era of ATR is my favorite in general also love this takes!! love the honesty and the way of seeing it :D
The discussion that came from this was pretty interesting, and I can very easily see where Judson's coming from.
Great conversation, that was wonderful.
I'd like to see a Six reaction too. That song is even more insane.
Six made me buy that album back in the days. I'd listen to any song where the guitars sound as they do in Six.
We saw these guys in Detroit in probably 2008-9ish i dont remember. Phil got down on the edge of the stage mid song, and some guy jumped up and tried to grab his hat off his head. Phil popped his ass square in the face without stopping singing. It was awesome

One of my favorite songs by hem, so melodic but still so heavy. That album is a staple in Metalcore, its so good.

I got into mid 2000's nostalgia a few months back
And this song is being played at least once a day (if not multiple times)
This album was a huge influence to me as a guitarist. RIP Oli "The Wizard" Herbert.
Bro this whole album was iconic as hell
Take me back! saw them 5 times in Chicago during this era they never disappointed..... best metalcore album ever imo
I was at Bonaroo in 2002. String Cheese Incident, Old Crow Medicine show and Bella Fleck were just incredible to watch.

Love the song. Love the channel!
This is probably one of my favorite songs by them, gotta thank the Saw movie for introducing me to this song 🙏

Loved the after discussion. Also a win that Judson brought up Robert Randolph.
Just saw ATR a few days ago, still kicking ass in 2024
Love that Havok shirt man!! Should maybe make Judson listen to a song from that album, I’d recommend Killing Tendencies!

love the double pedals in this song tbh
i wouldn't* put All that remains in the same category as early LoG

I love you guys take on the cynicism of the metal genre especially at that time.
Here for Richard's playlist! Where is it? :O
