I'mma be honest, dragging down an entire team of dedicated and talented people because of a single scummy person is a bad move. The producer should be tried and judged accordingly, but to drop the support of these works because of a single person is the equivalent of throwing away a batch of good apples because there's a rotten one in the middle. What the producer did is despicable, but the rest of the people shouldn't be forced to be dragged down for one bad apple.

Guilt by association was a historically japanese culture thing, and in some places the concept is still practiced (*coughcough*zoomers*cough*)!
As a cultural thing, the practice of a samurai's retainers committing suicide, simultaneous with the samurai that they served, was called tsuifuku.
Though you can argue that this isn't that, the dynamic of hierarchical power in a formal setting lends itself to a modern business rendition of how work associates "go down with a ship" as a result, often times with no say whatsoever.

As much as I agree with not supporting the producer for their vile criminal act that they have committed, I also want to support and appreciate Makoto Shinkai, the animators, and everyone else for making one of the most beautiful anime films out there. Separating the art from the artist may be difficult for some but as you get older, and it's sad to say but you slowly realize that criminal acts aren't that rare in the entertainment industry. That's my two cents on the matter.

This is a crime to where Separating Art from Artist arguments fall through the cracks to MANY people because of their closeness to others who've experienced such atrocities IRL.
Defending the art is fine, but not when it's dismissive of the actual crime. Like dude said, this will hover over every name involved with the criminal in question. And the only way to credibly defend the art he heavily participated in making is to say you don't care about his involvement. Like, straight up.

@@selvaa1592 I think the point he's making is that whenever Joey makes videos like this he always goes for the "if there's one creep, the entire industry might be full of creeps too" generalization blame game which puts an obvious majorly negative image on the entire industry during a time when Japanese pop-culture entertainment is like the main target for destruction from crazies from the West.
I've commented this before in one of Joey's videos. ANY industry will have creeps. Especially so with entertainment and pop-culture. If he reacts like this and gives this image onto his 800k followers, that's quite a large sphere of influence. It also gives ammunition to people who have dark goals towards destroying the Japanese pop-culture and entertainment industry in favor of whatever garbage the West is currently trying to peddle to people. What about Hollywood? What about the same industries in Arab countries? What about in Bollywood? All of these likely have creeps like these. Perhaps Hollywood is even the worst of them all for all we know. Joey needs to understand that his words have weight, and that he should choose them carefully. We should all know by know how hellish the anime/manga/light novel industry in Japan can be for the people that work there. If he is to focus on these creeps, he should not generalize all of the people working there with such a negative image as with any country's version of the entertainment industry.

It's not just entertainment though. Thousands of people are arrested every year for crimes against children. We only read headlines about the ones involved with famous projects, because they generate ad revenue. If some random guy in the town next to yours gets arrested for the same crime you probably wouldn't know about it. I understand that when you google these projects now it's possible for articles about this producer to be in the results. That sucks, especially for all the people who worked on these films, but it's not representative of the work they did.

Honestly I hate how people casually say things like „he made those anime movies“….he was the freaking producer, he was only responsible for the whole financial organisation behind the scenes…the producer of a film isn’t really involved in the actual production (unlike people in a supervisor position or the director). Like yea you obviously should mention that he was a mentionable producer of those films but I find it regally annoying how every news site (and joey as well) has to start of with a big headline like „creator of Suzume arrested for […]“ as this in my opinion shines bad light on the ACTUAL creator of these films - makoto shinkai, who is not a fault whatsoever.

I think its not the media to blame but the guy who did the crime to blame 😅. He is the pedo and he is the one who did the crime, he is part of creating the anime and that is just a fact, does he shed bad light on others working on this project and animators and on the anime itself etc ..yes but that is on him and something he should have thought about, that is not on the media that is just stating facts. Its very important people mention his role in the anime as a headliner because it also shed light on the issue in japan of manga and anime. Because It is an issue, pedo culture is big here because of it, pressure on women to be young and cute and stay that way is in this, pedophiles being created is part of this issue ,the porn industry full of highschool girls in uniforms is part of this. This sheds light on a bigger picture of the issue.
If they would stop making these anime always about love stories or sexualiIng highschool kids it would help out against this issue a lot.
I live in japan and the amount of 50 year old man obsessed with highschool girls anime that are in skimpy highschool uniforms is crazy. My ex neighbour had a car with an anime girl on it that looked 13 in a really skimpy sexual outfit and drawn almost naked... That is the reality man face here in japan and how they grow up with here .. this is a bigger issue and yes if its a producer doing this shit it should be mentioned in connection to what he created. Luckily this guy didnt create to bad of a anime but again this is just the tip of the iceberg.

@@Darwin-sama It's more complicated than that. can money and fame have somewhat of affect on a person's psyche? Yes but not to such a degree that they change completely as a person. Fame and money itself doesn't change people. It's usually the environment they're in or the person was already an asshole but couldn't act due to the limitations they had. Once the limitations were gone due to fame and fortune, then their true nature is amplified; money makes you more of who you already are. As for the environment, unfortunately, infidelity and corruption is common among the higher status in society (politicians, celebrities, business people, medical professions, etc.). So when it's around you, the temptation gets stronger (basically as the saying goes: 'if 5 of your friends are smokers, you'll be the 6th'). I wouldn't say a producer "make" an anime. Producer's job is anything but artistic. They are in the business and finances side of things. In Fact, once producers snoop their noses on the artistry created by the Artists, 9/10 that's when a film goes to the trash. Only thing they can do that involve the artists are limiting production budget. That's it.
ngl I wouldn't see Shinkai's film too differently. I don't need to seperate the artist to the art on this case. He is NOT an artist, he is a businessman.

No one should separate art from the artist especially if it is the main creator of a manga, buying volumes by saying it's just appreciating the art is wrong as it actively supports the criminal. But in this case, a team of hundreds of people shed sweat and tears for creating the masterpieces and we should not boycott the films for having one rotten apple in a bucked with hundreds of spotless ones. We just have to make sure the rotten one is thrown away in the garbage where it belongs never to be seen again.

I will also say, though, the producer is not necessarily or usually the artist-their job on film projects tend to be more managerial and operational. That isn’t to say that it’s not a valid issue to struggle to support or separate the work out, but I don’t think it’s fair to associate the producer of the work as an artist. If the person is cut out of any earnings from the projects, I don’t think it’s right to punish the actual artists and creators behind the work. Working in film and animation myself, I know I don’t want to support the work of monsterous people, or work with them, but I also never want to damn everyone involved in films, either. When some one is in a major creative role, like a writer, director, or leading actor, that’s very hard to separate and take out of stuff, but producers? Even having worked as a producer and having been proud of the work, I don’t think I can call it my creation, as it were. To me this would be like finding out a major manga editor at, say, Shonen Jump, had committed this sort of crime, and treating everything they had edited on as tainted.

Japanese anime has a LOT of "opened the girl's door without knocking" moments, and wardrobe malfunctions. Often the character caught undressed is the same age or younger than that producer's target. It's done often enough that most anime fans will see several scenes like this. The "must be censored" parts are, but it's like a point was made to show everything else. Even the most well-known shows can have these kinds of scenes. I understand that cultural differences exist, but what are the common Japanese views on this?

I feel like it definitely depends on how involved somebody is in a piece of art. A producer is actually not that bad I think, cus they usually are part of a producing company, rather than an independent producer. At the end of the day, I don't want somebody who has committed atrocities like this being rewarded or paid for it. If it means I have to stop following a series then so be it, but I'll look into them first to see if they were part of a company, if they have a stake in revenue even after serving jail time ETC. If it was a writer of a show then that might be kind of bad, because most writers are pretty imperative to a show and not very replaceable, unlike a producer.

Situation is simple: that was the producer, the money giver basically. So honestly - I have no issue with supporting the rest of the creators, like Shinkai Makoto, or guys from Radwimps, who created one of the most memorable songs of the decade. Not their fault, and Shinkai needs to find another producer to finance his films.
Sometimes creators are treated like idols and people often forget they are fallible. Of course it's devastating, always is, but we, as anime fans, can only condemn such people and hope bad apples are rare. :/
Nowadays we just know more about public figures,. but did you know that Rousseau, a French philosopher, famous for his advocating for children gave five of his own children to orphanage right after they were born? Public figures are only people, sometimes despicable ones but because of their popularity their dirt comes out at all. I am sure, that if Michael Jackson did nor become famous we probably wouldn't even know how cruel his father was to him and his siblings. Unfortunately with fame comes bigger focus on the individual and their wrongdoing is that much more highlighted.
Had not these two guys (Ito and Watsuki) been famous, we'd probably just hear about yet another Japanese man caught dealing in illegal behaviour towards minors. :/
I wouldn't blame anime industry, though, but human nature, as such. In some countries these urges are treated quite normal and are sanctioned by the law. :/ This is much bigger issue and it's just sad it happened again within anime industry. :/

I do believe in holding the people who do bad thing accountable, but I really think that it depends on what that art meant to you. It came out around the same time I moved to a new school far from any friends and it was what helped me be able to bond with the other students around me. I was able to find a lot of new friends, even learned a lot about myself too.
Then the whole mess with JK happened and while I hate the creator and what she is doing, I can't hate what the books did for me when I was at a low point. This is a feeling I have for anything that is put out into the world if it has had a very lasting impression on me. Because if I let what the creator did take away something I feel so close to and so dear to, then what will I have left in this world?

There is some intention with it tho, not just a feeling. I draw the line at these "things" when I learn it is problematic or has problematic origins. I think when people keep up with current events and participate in the socio-political climate they may reach a fork and decide to either stay ambivalent or begin to take personal accountability. I don't think one trumps the either because its a deeply personal way to navigate the world around us. It's basically the "my personal choice won't enact any real change" verses "change has to start somewhere" argument.

I've seen first hand how people's wrong actions affect others directly and it really makes me feel awful. My friend was in a now very popular girl vocal group here in Japan. She was bullied to the point of suicidal thoughts, anxiety, and literally being hospitalized. Did the agency handling them do anything? No...they ignored all of the things that were happening to her and everyone blamed here because her brother is a famous actor and she was just lucky to have that connection so she should just endure it... Obviously the group debuted without her. She left Japan for a while to help with her mental health and she is now under another agency and living her best life. Everytime I see those girls on TV or hear their group name I get so angry...

I think the main reason that anime has the reputation that it does is because of the actual content, not the fact that a few individuals do messed up stuff, I mean the only time I ever even hear about it is on this channel. No one talks about it in the western media. like, look at all the sleazy stuff that happens in hollywood. Doesn't have any impact on the popularity of Hollywood stuff.

To save time, Joey is covering this news from February. This is a few months old and even then the DIRECTOR and creator of Your Name wasn’t involved but has spoken out about the person in question, which was the Producer.

Personally, being a massive massive fan of your name and above mentioned films this is just incredibly hard to look at but at the same time I can never never in my entire life forget the emotions that I felt while watching them. So yeah in the back of my mind this tragic thing will be there but it won't affect my love for the movies..

He probably read to many producer-sama hentai. Producers mostly fund the projects not create them. So he just think of them as a sponsor then it'll be fine for the company. And you're right, it is discouraging to constantly see people of influence doing ill on the innocence.

The people who worked on the production shouldn't be punished because they had a monster in their mits. But honestly can't tell people how they should feel about a product they love.

11:10 nah, sorry but hard disagree here.
You cannot guilty trip people in the name of the victims,if YOU cannot separate the artist from the art i pity you,is truly a shame but don't give us that "oh you don't care about the victims" bs ,because that what is BS.
Give the criminal his sentence, protect the victim and is identify while doing the reparations needed, everything else is a overstep.
Why should we attack or hold accountable a work or piece of art by the crimes of the people who worked on it?
should we prohibit the consumption of a art piece because of the crimes the people who work on it did? to me the answer is a clear *NO* .
Art speaks for it self, and exists for it's own sake.

Anyone that value friends or family that are the target must realize that participants of bad conduct would come for their loved ones if given the opportunity. They are also feeding the evil and making it more popular encouraging more people into the evil environment, which increase demand for more victims causing more people to be at risk. Taking a strong stance against it, even if having to sacrifice loved art, makes it less tolerable and discourage people from it.

As soon as you brought up the art/artist I knew Rurouni Kenshin was going to get brought up somehow. It's the situation that challenged my stance on that the most. Personally, RK is super near and dear to my heart. When I was a kid going through a very hard time, I was contemplating leaving this world, and it was a quote from Kenshin and thinking about what his story is that stopped me in my tracks and kept me going. I feel like it's easy to get wrapped up in the wrongdoings of the creators and forget that art can help and be a positive influence on the people it reaches. It's obviously okay if you can't separate, but I don't think being attached to art means you don't care about the victims or that makes you a bad person.

Normally I'd agree with Joey's take on removing the artist from the work. The creators of those projects made that work and put their morals and ideals in it, which is still bad since you're absorbing the ideals and morals of those kinds of people. However, movies are known be a collaborative process where there are hundreds of people's morals/ ideals thrown at you. The thing is, the producer's role in a film is to fund and approve aspects of the movie. In terms of writers, actors, and animators, a producer's morals and ideals are hardly ever shown and are drowned out by the bigger roles of the film. I think it's still ok to consume even if the person that approved of the films did do some horrible stuff.
