As a teacher of 50 years (for students from 4 years to 56 years), I wish every student could have exposure to this class! ….(Each student would absorb as much as they were capable of) … We would have a wiser population and a better world …

I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else. C. S. Lewis

Immanuel Kant obviously based his idea of our innate concepts on Augustin's idea of our God given catagories.

Excuse me Professor Gore, but in which books exactly does S. Augustine develop his epistemology? Thank you in advance and God bless.

Augustine's epistemology must be stitched together from several of his writings. If you want to look at the topic more thoroughly, I suggest starting with an excellent volume written some years back by Dr. Ronald Nash.

If God is to the mind as the sun is to the eye, what about His own mind? Does He illuminate His own mind? If His mind is capable of illuminating itself, why are not other minds?

Think of God as self-contained. There is nothing outside of himself that is illuminating His mind. On the other hand, we are dependent on something outside ourselves illuminating our minds, which is God’s revelation to us.

@@riche7691 So you're saying God's mind does not require illumination because God is self-contained in that there is nothing outside of Himself. OK, but I take from this it is not mind, per se, that requires illumination, it's just the human mind that needs illumination, and the only thing that makes the human mind different from the divine mind is that there are things outside of the human mind. But even the human mind, as limited in time and space as it is, can over time and with sufficient resources get to know things outside of itself. Indeed, the process of getting to know things outside of the human mind has been institutionalized into we know as science. Therefore to the extent one learns science one has no need for illumination. Any objection?

    • @riche7691

@@Primitarian where I object is where you state that even the human mind can get to know things outside of itself without God’s revelation. Things don’t exist in a vacuum or as brute facts. Things exist only as God has revealed

@@Primitarian The objection presuppositional apologetics makes about science is that you cannot do science without presupposing God. In other words, there are things science takes for granted that cannot exist unless a self-contained creator existed

I would say the theory of evolution VERY easily explains the origin of intelligence and human brain. The mutations in human brain which can anticipate the changes in environment will always be a tool for better survival thus selected for. But then Augustin had no idea about evolution and all origin stories of man had humans popping up out of nowhere, so not exactly his fault.
