What I find most striking about this interview is how Humans use a wide variety of abilities and techniques to communicate while learning a language. We have the hearing and oral understanding group and then we have the readers and grammar understanding group. For polyglots they have another set of abilities to make better associations with the phonetic abilities and object associations abilities for learning another language.
Maybe after you get over the initial struggles of your learning a second language well, the third and fourth or more language acquisition becomes easier.
I have known people who would earn 100 percent on their written tests with even the most complex grammar structural issues, yet barely be able to orally communicate with ease with the native of the language they were learning in social situations.

Extremely interesting interview. Thanks for this gift! My take on it:
    1. Language is an *emergent* phenomenon of the brain (or, maybe, an emergent phenomenon of mind, that, in turn, is an emergent phenomenon of the brain).
    2. Brain does know nothing about "languages", "language separation" and so on. It cares even less about *grammar*. It just knows of words and *chunks* (phrasal verbs, idioms, collocations and so on).
Hence, do not worry too much about grammar and focus on practicing the understanding and the use of chunks.

Very informative and comprehensible. First of all, many thanks for that opportunity to learn from a researcher of one of the most prestigious worlds academic institutions.
There are two things that have struck me the most:
    - mostly unilateral nature of brain activity concerning the verbal communication and language in general
    - the idea over the predominance of internal mental structures over the production ability, what it comes to the expression " to have a clue " . Please correct me if I am wrong.

BE CAREFUL! Don't be disappointed or discouraged yourself, Even if you don't understand this! This is not a process of the second language acquisition, This is an anatomy of the first language which we all have already. BE PATIENCE and KEEP MOVING FORWARD. After I acquire English as my second language, I will humiliate them all. Of course in ENGLISH.

Ha, she's very cute, I was enjoying listening to her. But there's a thing that confuses me. To all fundamental questions, she answered typically: "this is unclear to us'. You see, to all fundamental issues "this is unclear, that is unclear". And one more thing, all my life I thought that MIT is exceptionally a technological institute. Who would ever think that there's a neurological faculty at MIT. Once again, she's very cute. I mean her fascinating smile and those amiable eyes. She has an interesting name Ev, never met such a name before and at the same time she bears a Ukrainian surname. Thank you for this interview. From time to time when I get a suggestion from UA-cam I drop into your channel and sometimes find very interesting content like today's one. P.S. Looking throughout the text of mine can't see any mistakes but please excuse me if there are. English isn't my native language.

    • @ziborgbe

You can consider the human brain and it's functions as kind of supercomputer. So i think that is the reason why there is a such faculty in MIT.

I think 100% immersion is important, but in reality life is quiet difficult sometime... Or if we can learn when sleeping, that probably can add more time to immerse, and acquaint target language, but sleep quality will come to wose influcning the next time... So God is fair, it's difficult to like a native speaker , because time limit it, otherwise we spend 20, 30 years totally in target language, but you could forget your mother language, too..
So God is fair, we need more time...
