I study maths at uni and even I struggle with these types of tests. The time ticker freaks me out!

The actual math per question is relatively easy. It is the comprehension of the actual question that is the killer! Due to time pressure, you may wish to 'skim' read which is the WRONG thing to do. If there are 20 questions, aim to get 14 right which will allow you time to fully read the questions
But sir, the problem is that questions are timed and you'll get hardly a minute to finish each. After a minute expires, the system would automatically will redirect you to the next question. This is extremely frustrating and I guess these tests are meant only for mathematicians.
I bet that not even 15% of employees at Citi, Barclays or Goldman are able to get a 70% pass rate at that test if they did it on Monday.

I just bombed at citi bank and I’m usually pretty good at math.
I think one of the best tips I got for numerical reasoning tests was to make sure you had the right computer set up. It's way easier to take these tests with Excel and a mouse than with a hand calculator. This is because it's much quicker to enter the data with a key board than with your fingers on a shitty little calculator. The other tip was to use two screens - that way you can have the test open in one, and Excel open in the other, so you don't need to alt-tab between the windows. A small tip I have for most people is to use the store button on your calculator to store answers. On a FX 911 ES (standard calculator for a-level students), press shift-STO and use any letter such as A,B,C. You need to be able to store answers quickly, writing them down is too long and disadvantageous because you have to type in the calculator again. I'm not good at these tests either, but at least this helps me a little bit.
I feel like this is as much as comprehension test as a numerical reasoning test, the zooma 1 and zooma 2 only serves to confuse people in the short amount of time they have.
For the second question I think you took a correct approach but maybe too long:
220 * 1.15 will give us the july cost which is 253.
We know that 253 = 3.3% of the total expenditure, so total expenditure is: 253/0.033 = 7667 :)

Now try using the same method bu5 now calculate 90% of the total expenditures. What you are doing is that you are just not writing that you divide the 3.3% by 100.

Although time adds to the pressure, the hardest thing in some ways for me personally is actually understanding the question. And that's what you need to do regardless of how much time you have left during the test. These tests, test your ability to understand the question and how long it takes for you to understand the question and then answer it within the allotted time-frame (i.e. approx. 45-60 secs per question). Easier said that done I know. I find numerical reasoning tests the most challenging out of all the different types of psychometric tests.
If only I thought about looking for these kind of videos before taking those numerical reasoning test, 1 question 75 - 90 seconds, so crazy! Thanks for the video by way, a new hope for future tests.

Usually questions are easy. Time is the biggest issue.
These tests do not indicate some one capabilities or capacity in doing a job, they are just cut off point really
sometimes i have to re-read the questions more than once or even twice and by then my time has gone so i freak out and move to the next question thinking i'd come back but i dont. how do you manage that?

I'm exactly the same i freak out too much and the only advise i would give is that keep doing more practice tests.
I find these tests so random, I study finance, stats, economics and accounting and all my interviews as for these tests, but I learnt nothing about how to super speed random math questions in my degree, so why these tests? So now I'm going through a pack of practice tests and am just going to practice, practice practice untill I can do it. And also log bakc into the careers website for a job I didn't get after failing this test and practice that one again too lol (maybe the next job will use the same test, that'd be convieniant).
I totally agree with you, I'm nearly to finish my bachelor in administration in one of the most important college in South America and we never learnt nothing like this, how can this define if I'm a good or bad for that position?

I hv been trying to solve that second question since last week
I just got a 3.5 in Calc 1 and 2 and I failed this test for an internship. I had less than 1 minute for each question and questions were more like riddles, very confusing to find what they were really asking for.
Yeah, these tests are more like a filter. They use this to weed out more people and reduce their candidate pools, so they can make a decision much quicker.
What is this? the second question was so confusing. Please try to understand that some people have only the idea of basic maths.

lessie owolabi you’re wrong. It wasn’t 1.3 - it was 1.13. And you put 1.13 instead of 0.13 as you are finding an percentage increase instead of finding 13% of a number.
for the second question
i always had this habit of using a different method which also gives the same answer
instead of dividing 3.3 by 253 i divide 3.3 by 100 and use this number (to find out how many times i would need to times to get the answer), so 30.30 times by 253 to give 7666.6
I feel confused about the second question. what about calculating the Total expenditures of June and then calculating the July?
Answer:
220 / 3.5% = 6285.7 (Total expenditures of June)
6285.7 * 1.15 = 7228.5 (increased by 15%, Total expenditures of July)
so the answer is B
You may increase your consumption by 15%, but you have different percentage of total family cost which on July is 3.3%. What you have done is that you applied the increase in a 3.5% of total family cost for July too.
Life is hard but numerical reasoning tests make it harder.

I'm a bit confused as to why I would use multiply using 1.13 instead of 0.13 or just plain

if it increase by 13%, it means itself times (1+13%)
multiplying by 0.13 would give you 13% of the original value. By putting 1.13 the one before the decimal point acts as the original value, such as multiplying a number by itself you will get the same number. So 1.13 is the original value plus the 13% increase, easier than finding the percentage then adding it on, it's the same math this is just faster.
This is the problem for me too taking these tests. Nobody explains where they get the figures from
That second question was really confusing
I feel like they explained it kind of weird, but it is a pretty short video:
The first step of the problem doesn't really involve the data table at all. You know the June expenditure is $220, you need to find out the July expenditure; since it's a 15% increase, multiply by 1.15 --> $253.
The second step of the problem is to find out what the total family expenditure is in July, and for this you need the table. Entertainment in July made up a total of 3.3% of the family's expenses, as indicated by the table header.
Here's where I think they lost a few people (and lost me for a minute or two):
3.3% of the total was $253, so I'd write it as 3.3=253. You then write out what you have out of what you want,
so you have 3.3% out of the 100% that you want, you have $253 out of an unknown number (N) that you want to have.
3.3/100 = 253/N
you then cross-multiply and/or move around the equation so that you're solving for N --> 253x100 = 3.3xN --> 25300 = 3.3xN --> 25300 / 3.3 = N.
The video used a different order of operations to complete the same task; they skipped the equation gymnastics and used the following logic:
dividing 253 by 3.3 gives you 1% of the total family expenditure, then multiplying by 100 will give you 100% of the expenditure. Rewriting this would like: 253/3.3=N/100 --> 76.666 = N/100 --> 76.666 x 100 = N --> 7666.6 = N
I prefer my method because I can fill in the gaps with the data that I KNOW and the data that I WANT to find, but I hoped this explanation helped people who were struggling with question 2.

+hotcupofsoup When you calculate a percentage of some number, you're essentially calculating a fraction of the number. For example: 50% of 200 is 100, in other words, 1/2 of 200 is 100. In the above video, we are dealing with an increase in profits so calculating like above will only give how much the price increased/decreased by and not the end price. So to find the profit after the 13% increase, It is the fraction plus the original amount so 13% + 100% = 113%=1.13. Hope that helps and I didn't confuse you.

Can you please let me know that how are we supposed to tackle these sort of questions if we aren't allowed calculators in the paper. Even if the question mentions to round the answer to the nearest thousand etc, the answers as still quite close to give it a spot on guess.
No. You can't round up! That is the wrong word, and It does matter in that case. Even with 24.001 you will have to choose 25. You just have to understand the question.
Funny how the Mathematician answers 'B' for the second question but there is a nice voiceover to change it to C, but you can clearly read from his lips he is saying B.... If that was the tricky part to detect in an assessment, I nailed it ;)
How long are you supposed to take on questions like these? They are more complex than some so it takes longer to figure out how to do it.

Because an increase in 15% equates to multiplying the value by itself, and then a further 15%.
You can break this down to multiplying by itself (1) and 15% (0.15). Why 0.15? Because 15% = 15 PER CENT = 15/100 = 0.15
Combine those actions and multiply the value by 1.15.

multiplying by 1.15 is confusing. there's a simple way to explain this. ''15% increase'' means add 15% of the original number to the number. 15% decrease means reduce 15% of the original number from the number.

some of us with basic maths are missing out. how can you say 15% of 220 is 220*1.15 = 253? I know 15% of 220 is 15/100 *220= 33. Thus to get the increase add 220 + 33

Hope that makes sense, its the same thing but just quicker to do 1.15

+walterrodney nagumo multiplying it by 1.15 saves you time from adding it later basically. your way works, but that way is must faster. so if they ask you that 'X' got an increase of 30% from the original price of 150, then what you do is '1.3 x 150 = 195'. If you use your way then its: '30/100 = 0.3/ 0.3 x 150 = 45/ 45 + 150 = 195'

In China, 12 year olds would easily solve these questions without a calculator, provided questions are written in Chinese. in the States, bunch of grownups are struggling with this... and the US is ruling the earth... how the hell did that happen..
Its not the math that is hard but rather the time constrain. And if the Chinese are so smart, perhaps they should have spend some time learning basic English which is the world's universal language instead of practicing these pointless tests that AI could solve.

Max Be careful different companies such as SHL and Kenexa have unique ways of structuring their questions. It’s better to prepare for a specific style of questions/set of conditions rather than random questions from the internet. Think of 100% as being a multiple of 1. E.G, 100% of 2 is 2, so equally, 2x1equals 2. It’s also possible to think of the percentage as being shifted to the left two decimal places, e.g 145% translates to 1.45, 635% to 6.35 etc.

Yes but it's value increases, so it has to be 13% bigger. So 100% of it's value + 13%. If you multiple only by 0,13, that will mean that it's value decreases 87%.

I'm not trying to be demeaning but this is a maths gcse question GCSE!!! As in 14/15/16 year olds know the answer to this
You do realize that by the time you might need that knowledge, it's already been way out of your head? You get good at math by practicing, if you are not practicing math 8-9 years later, then the knowledge you had at 14/15/16 years etc. is not readily accessible. These type of questions I believe for a position that already requires you to have math skills is fine, but I've had job offers that had no relation to these type of questionnaires and the type of job you actually performed. A lot of the times people just want to get overqualified people for the job with low self esteem. Actually doing the job makes you better at it, unless we're talking about risky jobs, like being a surgeon which you won't be able to get, unless you are a highly trained specialist already.
