  • Gerund phrases are used as a noun in a sentence. They can often be confused with participle phrases, but one simple test will help you to distinguish between the two. These phrases can be used as a subject, a subject complement, a direct object, or as an object of a preposition. Using these types of phrases will improve your writing.

    Madam,as you have recently told that a gerund phrase almost never require punctuation but you have written comma in the sentence By learning additional skills,....

      When we put the phrase at the beginning of a sentence, we need to add a comma. We do not need to add a comma when we put it at the end of a sentence.

    Difference between gerund phrase and present participle

      This is a good question. A gerund acts like a noun while a present participle acts like a verb or adjective.

    mam i have a question.then ,why you have used Comma in your sentence which has Gerund phrase.
    By learning additional skills ,..........

    • @WritingBetter
      @WritingBetter  7 місяців тому +1

      You can also write this sentence in this way:
      . . . . . by learning additional skills.
      In this case, because the gerund phrase comes at the end of the sentence, you do not need a comma.
      However, if you put the gerund phrase at the beginning of the sentence, you must put a comma.

    Hello mam
    As we know gerund phrase working as noun .
    So
    can we use gerund phrase or gerund with Dummy subject "THERE" as noun.
    As)--
    1) -- THERE was [fighting in the class] .
    2)-- THERE was [starting a new business] in town.
    Is "THERE" word still "DUMMY subject" in those sentences ?
    And what is the real subject in those sentence ?
    I hope you help us .

    • @WritingBetter
      @WritingBetter  Рік тому

      When a sentence begins with There is(are), “there” is not the subject.
      1. There was fighting in the class.
      The sentence is actually:
      Fighting was in the class. (So, “fighting” is the subject.)We do not use that sentence form but use “There was fighting in the class.”
      The phrase “fighting in the class” is not a gerund in this sentence.
      “Fighting in the class was a weekly event.” would be an example of this being used as a gerund phrase.
      2. There was starting a new business in town. This sentence is not a complete sentence. “Starting a new business in town is difficult.” would be a possible sentence using this phrases as a gerund.
      I hope this helps to make this clearer.

    Hello. Can a gerund be followed by an infinitive as in the following sentence: He dislikes having to punish his servants? In this sentence having(gerund) is followed by to punish(infinitive). Please respond

    • @WritingBetter
      @WritingBetter  Рік тому +1

      He dislikes having to punish his servants.
      Test for a gerund /gerund phrase:
      He dislikes this.
      “Having to punish his servants” is a gerund phrase.
      Here are a few more examples:
      Having to study English is tiring.
      She hated having to dry her long hair.
      So, yes, when “having” is used as a gerund it can be followed by an infinitive.

    You said gerund never comes with punctuation but one of the sentences have a comma (,) in the last examples

    • @WritingBetter
      @WritingBetter  Рік тому

      The example:
      By learning additional skills, his chances of a better salary were guaranteed.
      The gerund with the preposition “by” is placed at the beginning of this sentence, which means we need to add a comma before the rest of the sentence.
      The sentence could have been written this way:
      His chances of a better salary were guaranteed by learning additional skills.
