  • Mark Strassmann reports on the journey of the car that starred in the Steve McQueen classic, "Bullitt," and the owners who jealously protected their prize, even refusing to sell the car to McQueen himself. Strassmann also talks with McQueen's costar Jacqueline Bisset about the very special appeal that the Highland Green 1968 Ford Mustang GT Fastback had (and continues to have) on movie audiences.

This was the car that played in the enormous skyrocketing of mustang sales in last 1960’s. It’s a sad truth that today’s generation doesn’t even know that bullitt is a thing. This got me hooked on American muscle cars. Every movie car chase, from fast and furious to Jason Bourne, was just a descendant to the bullitt mustang chase. This car may be 51 years old, but it will never get too old or ancient to watch the greatest car chase ever filmed with the legendary Steve McQueen.

The Mustang, the car chase, Mc Queen, Vaughn, Bisset and all the casting , Peter Yates direction and fabulous Lalo Schiffrin soundtrack, the special SF's atmosphere... all these elements made a masterpiece of the XXth century's motion picture.

Cinemobile systems provided the movie equipment for " Bullitt" so exciting to film. For the same amount of money paid for the "Bullitt " mustang, the buyer could have bought a bran new "laferrari" top speed 200 plus mph. The most amazeing Ferrari ever built.

In 1973, before I had ever seen the movie, my first car was a green 68 fastback gt. 1050 dollars. It was a 302 model but if I had kept it long enough to see the movie that would have been fixed. Seeing this reminds me of how clean a design that year was. I traded it to a friend of mine for his 71 Z28. Those were the two cars that I absolutely should have kept. Total investment at the time was 3850 dollars. Neither had over 70,000 miles. Ok, I've talked it out. I'll just stare at the ceiling for awhile and you can go on with your business.

I know there were something like 4-5 Mustangs used in the film, all but one were wrecked and the remaining one was sold to a secretary at Warner Brothers. So how did this car end up in the classified listings of a car magazine years later, and with the films’ title misspelled too?? Shouldn’t that be a clue it might not be authentic??

Sigh... okay. For everyone questioning this car's authenticity- ENOUGH ALREADY!!! Anyone who bothered to do a little research would know that there were TWO '68 Mustangs used in the film. One was the stunt car, the other was used for the "hero" shots. The one at Mecum was the hero car. The stunt car was also recently found at a scrapyard in Mexico. Finally, I read an article somewhere where what they believe is the surviving Charger ( there were two of those also apparently ) was also found. Does that clear everything up for the doubters?

The chase scene is still so different today cause there's no dialog or music for almost 10 minutes. I read somewhere that they had planned to use music but when the director heard the sound of the engines, he decided that the music should be the sound of the cars themselves. Smart dude.

I have to believe if Steve would have offered the "it ain't for sale" price, they would have sold it to him. But I do agree that since the family owned it fair and square they were under no obligation to sell it back to Steve, even though history will always say it is Steve's Mustang.

I think it's feels right to keep the car within the family. I mean, if they had sold the car for McQueen we'd probably never have the chance to see it again, or it would be restored and would lose it's scratches from the movie. What we're seeing now, it's history, it's raw and it's a piece of art saved as it is.

The Bullitt chase was not staged by McQueen, although he was hands on regarding its inception. The stunt coordinator for the movie was Cary Loftin. When McQueen wasn't driving (which is about 1/2 the chase), his driving double was Bud Ekins. Ekins claimed, "Most of the chase was filmed before Steve woke up every morning."

since when did a 390 GT need a smoke machine?...always wondered why they didn't chunk in a Traction-Lok differential, especially for the scene where he blistered the right rear tire for 100 yards, even tho the open, spider gear carrier turns the left in reverse..[usually]...which is what we see...if that was for a smoke machine why wasn't it used for a locker effect with smoke off both tires?...think im going with the cooling duct guy....a 390 GT Mustang can roast the tires anytime you tromp it....let alone if its a 428-SCJ or even a side oiler, or 390 horse... 427.

When I was a sophomore in H.S. in 1972 I had worked for two summers saving my pennies and bought a '67 Pontiac Lemans. It had the 326 High Output (HO) engine which consisted of higher compression, a 4 barrel carb and dual exhaust and a 3 on the floor. A good friend of mine then shortly after I bought my car bought a '68 GT Mustang, highlands green with the 390 4 barrel engine...it was literally a duplicate of the Bullitt car, but back then nobody thought anything about it as the car had not yet become an icon. Btw the '68 390 was pretty much a dog engine as the only time we raced I beat him pretty convincingly with my little 326 LeMans

AGREED, absolutely best car chase. I love to note some interesting quirks. When shifting he's pedaling it in-between gears like double clutching. After he spins out in the dirt and continues down the road it gets a second gear chirp only possible by an automatic. The charger was black which was not available in 68 and thats okay. Two or three hubcaps were thrown off only to be there in a later scene. I don't care, i just think its fun !

I had Mrs. Kiernan for third grade, and remember her parking that car in the school driveway every day. I seem to remember some kid taking a spill on the ice and falling against it with his metal lunchbox clasps catching on the car, spilling it open, the matching thermos ricocheting off the car with a thud, and rolling down the lane. The kid got up, collected his sandwich, Twinkie, and thermos, off the ice, and no one thought anything of it, not even Mrs. Kiernan, who had been promptly informed by a tattle-tale. I'm sure it took more than a hit or two from kickballs and street hockey pucks too. There were definitely other cars parked along there whose consequences would have been much more dire, believe me. $6K must have been really big coin to spend on a used car in those days! She used to definitely indulge in Irish purple rage now and then, but I don't recall concern about the car ever being the source of it.

The suspension was highly modified to make the “jumps”. In fact there was more than one car. One had a 427 and the other had a 390. There may have been more. But those are the only two I saw during filming. I grew up in Santa Clara, California...spent a lot of time in San Francisco after graduating from high school. Happened upon the blocked streets and preparations for filming. Never saw McQueen or any actors.

I dunno - I wish that the Mustang hadn't been renovated . Can't help but notice that the divers side mirror isn't the one in the movie ; radio antenna is back on the cowel . Not quite the the Bullitt Mustang , y'know ? And the grill looks like a stock grill sans pony and frame . I once read that the grill was replaced by wire mesh . Beats me . When Mcqueen parks the car in the cab driver scene , there was no driver side mirror . During the chase , the mirror is on the car door . Which is which ? For me , it's lost a lot of movie /collector value . BTW - whats the vin # ?

There were 2 used for the movie. Both 390 V8 4 speed cars, but one was a true GT, the other was a non-GT fastback. Both were de-trimmed similarly so they looked alike, but there were some differences. This one ended up in private hands. It wasn't really restored per-say, repairs were made which preserved it, unlike what the son said. The other car, the one that skidded into the ditch at the end of the chase with a broken lower control arm was supposed to have been sent to a junkyard and destroyed. Well, in the last few years, it was found mostly stripped in Mexico, and last I saw was undergoing an actual restoration.
