This is actually a really good system especially the 'leveling' which would help pair similarly skilled wrestlers

I don't think this will ever be a big enough idea to complete replace the bracket concept, but they should totally scrap the youth state tournaments and replace them with a biweekly Warzone tournament. Everyone would get 25-35 matches over a season instead of two or three big tournaments and getting 10-15 matches

It won't replace bracketed tournaments, as that is the pinnacle of wrestling; but hopefully the ratings will be incorporated into the majority of matchups moving forward (for bracketed events, duals, live pairing, etc).

Check out our new bracketed software, rapid brackets! We can run WAR Zone at the same time.

Would love to see this implemented with a BJJ league, pairing people up by belt rank can be misleading.

Essentially applying the Elo concept to wrestling? Sounds good, hope this catches on and spreads.

I believe this system is very awesome! May I know how you calculate WAR?

山﨑哲也 The exact mathematics are proprietary, but I can tell you that it is based of off the ELO rating system used in competitive chess.

      Jason Layton Thank you Jason.
I think 2 things are important for success of this system; scalability and evaluation for beginners.
I'm a wrestling coach for beginners(mainly they are workers) and would like to give them great motivation and I believe winning is the most effective. This system must help them to get a successful experiment so I hope this system will be spread all over the world! Cheers!

Once we have some data, it will be very easy to place new wrestlers. We will only need to know the WAR of another wrestler who is similarly skilled, and we can start the new wrestler with an equivalent provisional rating. I'm looking forward to the challenge of scaling. Thank you for the support!

@@TY-ye2hv We've gotten really good at the placement of beginners over the past 2 years. We are almost to the point where all new wrestlers will experience both winning and losing at their first event.

I guess the devil is in the details. For example, what does the software consider "safe margins" of age, weight, and skill? Also, we have found a TON of age-cheating at tournaments so unless the input age is verified with a state issued photo ID then tournament integrity goes out the window. State IDs are available at the age of 5 at the DMV. I do like the idea of more matches, but I wonder if that could also be accomplished with traditional brackets and a round robin format.

The video is a bit misleading as the software doesn't actually pick the matches; it generates an ordered list of potential matches ranked from best to worst, and then a human selects the matchup to be paired. What is considered a safe margin of age/weight/skill is done on a case-by-case basis, but it becomes irrelevant as events get larger as there are then lots of quality matchups for everyone.
As far as IDing wrestlers, age cheating isn't really an issue because there are no divisions; once you are rated, you're going to face wrestlers who are appropriate for you. Of the 3 things we base matchups on (age, weight, and skill), age plays the smallest role; it plays a larger role before the athletes are accurately rated, but once the ratings are solid, we know what a good matchup is regardless of age. Your profile and statistics stay with you from event to event.
The main advantage we have over bracketed and round-robin events is that because all matchups are done on the fly, we are much more flexible with who we pair. When you introduce the rigidity of weight classes, age divisions, and skill divisions, you miss a lot of good matches between kids who are in different divisions.
