As we now have a keyboard section in our band, we decided for this tune to record the version with strings. Contributors:

no matter who plays this, i close my eyes & enjoy. thank you VS. the tone is pretty close. hank's picking for this is just behind the neck pup, so you may have to do a little tweaking. the second half is played muted so that the short delay's ripple is clearly heard. little bit more of muting would do provided, that your delay setting is in line. the last 'D' is played (string/fret) 5/open 4/12 3/11 2/10 1/14.
your keyboardist has to listen to the one in their "shadows at their very best" cd that has the original strings parts, which are played with the low harmony &, there is no chords progression what so ever is played on strings. i find the one i mentioned here on you tube in which the strings parts are unheard! :).

How did you activate the delay effect for the palm muted part?
Delay is always active indeed. But it is not distinguished when notes are sustained. As soon as you mute notes, then it is revealed.

Yes, Hank Marvin was often using mutes in all these early years tunes (less in modern numbers). It is not especially difficult to make them with a bit of practice. What is important is to have a good position of the right hand in general, in order not to have to 'think' when you have to make some. Your hand must fall naturaly where it should be. Also, the tremolo arm is important. Hank marvin is using a special one that facilitates all this. I did modify mine as well. It helps. But you can find modified trem arms on the net.

An interesting tune. Simple melody yet somehow profound. Leaves one with a very slight feeling of saudade, at least to me. There's just something about it. It shouldn't evoke those feelings because it's just a simple catchy tune, although I find it addictive and play it many times over. Your rendition is pretty much perfect to my ear. Crisp, exactly how it should be. I notice you check the delay/echo immediately before the section played with muted strings. That's a typical Hank feature, even though it was composed by Bruce. Is any reverb involved? Silly question probably...

Concerning sound (echo, reverb and so on), I am using a personal system that is computer based (VST technology). You may find more information on my forum here: vintage-sounds.freeforums.net/
I developped an effects package running on PC that emulates the sounds of most of Shadows tunes (and not only shadows), and I distributed it freely.
Concerning the first intro note(s), this is because on some original versions it is doubled and on some others it is not.

@@springer16900 Many thanks for your response Springer, and the lead to your forum. I'm super interested in Shadows work, but at 75 I'm just starting out on guitar. Currently in the process of building a Strat copy from bits. I could have shelled out for a complete guitar, whether Fender or copy, but I find it much more challenging to do the work myself. Much more satisfying, although of course fraught with potential issues. I care not, I'll get there. Learning guitar I suspect will be rather more of a challenge than building one. I'm not particularly inclined to learn chords, except those needed for Shadows tunes. But that's just me....
@@logotrikes Good luck for your DIY guitar work. What a challenge ! I would not even try that myself. Well... We all have different tastes and passions. On my side, I was more interested by sounds, computers and so on. So I made this sounds package.

This strat is a Strat Plus by the way. It was equipped with lace sensor pickups. I replaced them by a set of 57/62. No other modifications. I am using D'addario 110+ strings (10.5-48). The Wilkinson steel nut does not accept higher gauges. But my sound is not really due to guitar but rather to the VST system I have developped.
