Watching your streams have always been super comforting to me and my husband, but this video deserves a special shout out. Immediately calmed me down and I managed to fall asleep for the first time. Thankyou to Jacob, Julia and the editors for producing such amazing content. two hours never went by so fast!! i was genuinely upset when they said they were gonna end the stream lmaooo Also? full captions? AND they're colour coded!? [chef's kiss] a work of art
**Gameplay spoilers:** You're forced to backtrack later anyways so it doesn't matter about tying up loose ends as soon as possible. You'll still have to go slightly out of your way to 100% a language but at least you'll be in the same zone. Same goes for finding the "Something has changed in the tower!" things but those are easy to find. Also damn they blasted through Bard translations, that took me forever.
The Bard's language is definately the one that has the most potential for being a roadblock, but I think the two of them were at a significant advantage due to Julia making the connection *really* early to Japanese. Unlike English, which uses SVO word order, Japanese uses SOV. The Bards use OSV which is different from both, but just having that frame of mind that sentences can be formulated in different ways puts you in the right headspace to automatically re-order the words as you translate.
I was obsessed with this game until I solved it. I played it only a week or two before you guys started and it made me so happy that you two found it as well
The last word I discovered in the Bard language was "idiot." I honestly thought it meant "brave," and the bards were saying the warriors were brave, and asking "do you want to ascend? Are you brave?" Learning that one word made me realize the Bards are total dicks. This is a great game.
I've been watching vods of this stream for forever, and it is literally only this stream, through the power of subtitles, that the name of one of the subscribers is "Reed Marks Dammit" and not "Read Marx, dammit". I have, for all this time, been convinced that there was just someone whose name was a command telling me to pick up the communists manifesto, and I never once questioned it. Anyway, thanks for all the hard work
You were actually right, it is "read." Although a lot of the sub names are pretty accurate out of the transcriber I don't double check them because that would take very long. -Khaztaroth
I went and 100%-ed the game after watching the first 2 episodes (thankfully I didn't like remember that much so I didn't have a huge leg up) but watching Jacob and Julia absolutely 360-no-scope-one-shot some of the words in the bards language on a dang hunch made me feel like an absolute fool cuz most of that languages words took me so long to figure out
the bard language is the hardest to logic out. These guys arent afraid to brute force some of the unknowns on the page which makes it easier later on. I think its a lot less interesting way to play. I wish the game had some sort of cooldown that prevented you from attempting a bunch of words quickly after a wrong guess
Bought the game halfway through episode 1, spent last weekend entirely devoted to finishing it, making a complete map of the game b/c I kept getting lost. Thank you for bringing this excellent game to my attention so I could have an obsession!
I have the same colour association to lessons, I think the classrooms in some schools do actually have some colour coordination within the classrooms so certain areas of the school where certain classes take place are all one colour
So math has typically been blue for me -- partially assigned by the teachers -- and this discussion has lead me to wonder: is there a gendered bias underlying such assignments? E.g., math typically being considered a "boy subject" (because stem misogyny etc, yadda yadda) more often getting assigned blue than red? But that hypothesis would require way more data.
I haven't bought this game yet, but I immediately added it to my Steam wishlist after the first stream. It's a gorgeous game that's very clearly inspired by games like Journey and the Pathless. And I think you guys mentioned that it's made by a grad student? Damn impressive work!
I bought this game after the second stream and absolutely loved it! It's so interesting to see where J+J struggle vs where I struggled, and how differently they approach things. Excited to see y'all play this to the end
Agh! The way this game shows how a language itself is made off of the values and biases the society holds... the same word for 'labourers' and 'idiots,' the way the Bards language is built for poetry and the Alchemists is built for science, their triangular words for what is on top of the tower, 'God,' 'Duty,' 'Beauty,' its so cool.
My partner and I bought this game after your first stream. We just finished it tonight, absolutely 10/10 game. We’re sad it’s over and need more! Thanks for streaming so we could find this gem ❤
I bought this game half way through the first vod and hyperfixated my way through it in one sitting instead of sleeping. Great game, but watching yall play it is the better experience for me i think.
FINALLY someone with the same subject-color associations as me! the one jacob forgot was red for english/language arts. i also had purple for foreign languages.
Jacob's folder color system was exactly the same as mine! Green = science (because you always think about green bubbling liquids in beakers when you think science) Yellow = history (because old weathered documents are yellow) Blue = Math (because cold and calculating, plus my brother's favorite color was blue and ge was good at math and his name has math in it) red = english (because it has more emotions in it than other subjects plus it was my favorite subject and red was always my color in board games) other subjects get purple and orange and other colors
Noun Town could be considered the real languages version of this game, if you are interested! You can explore youe surroundings and discover the language through conversation or by looking at objects etc.
54:45 I’m realizing now on my second watch through of this that the artists explicitly don’t like building, which means they don’t think architecture is an art form, but they DO like making games, explicitly including game design as an art form to them lol. May not be the kind of “game design” we think of now but it is still designing something to be played.
for the record I have only ever seen "theater" in America, for all meanings. Words ending in -re is almost exclusively traditional English (British, Canadian, Australian, etc)
Interestingly, we can see a fragment of lost language (as in, glyphs that can't be recorded in the journal) on the broken inscription by the purple door in the sewers. On the top, there's the warriors' glyph for fortress, with the bards' glyph underneath, and then a fragment of the devotees' lost glyph for fortress. You can clearly see the edges of their "place" modifier and one of the arrows from their "warrior" glyph. Presumably, the arrows mean "weapon" when separated from the "man" modifier. We also get some insight into bard society, as their glyphs for "bard", "warrior" and "man" all include the 5-shaped curl, signifying that bards and warriors are different classes of people, whereas "idiot" and "brother" don't, since any people regardless of class can be idiots or brothers. Even bards can be idiots, as seen in the play where the "idiot bard" follows the path of ascension.
@@Quintinohthree That's fair. When I watched part 1, I was thinking it meant "clash/conflict", or indeed "war". Having just watched part 3, I was in the bardic mindset of "A weapon, the warrior carries". Goes to show how easily one can be influenced by exposure to language and culture, even in fiction.
@@KittyKatalina In any case it's a beautiful world with open ends waiting to be explored. I sincerely hope the developers are already thinking of a sequel, because I can think of so many ways to add on to this story with new languages, new mechanics and new stories to discover.
32:48 I just want to point out, that last stream Jacob had said “I’m so tired, I can’t even solve an 8 piece puzzle. Good thing he found it this stream. This is a 9 piece

Commenting works. Thank you so much, I'm pleased with the result. Also, the reception to the subtitles by the community has been amazing so I'm super happy about it. -Khaztaroth
I know I'm not the intended audience since I'm not HoH, just auditory processing issues, but the high vibrance on the colors for the subtitles against the black background makes it so I can't read it without eye pain I know that's something hard to balance since some people can see high saturation more easily, but just to put it out there as a factor (I also don't know how high the actual saturation is, but having it on black makes it very bright for me) I'm really enjoying watching this game though and appreciate all the work the community is doing to make SSS accessible! ❤
I've received several comments pointing that out, today's (10/15) VoD will have different colors that aren't as bright but hopefully still distinct enough for colorblind people. Once I have the style finalized I'll update all other VoDs to have the style we did up on. I do appreciate the feedback on it and I'm hoping to make them as good as possible. -Khaztaroth

Olive: I want to be free ("to be" is implicit)
Joy: Me, free plays ("Free plays me" in normal English word order)
Them showing the cat tree
Me already looking in the corner: "Is that a tuba or gramophone? Wonder who it belongs to."
I'd hypothesise the opposing chevrons subglyph ">
57:31 How did they miss the perfect "Go up baldy" reference 😭😂
You two are just too cute! Couple goals right there. And the cats are the cuteness cherry on top.
this is incredibly random but i am reeling from the fact that jacob and i had the same color coding for school subjects because ive never met anyone who had the exact same four colors as me for math, science, english, and social studies
How do I contact Khaz to let them know that they do a phenomenal job? Subtitles on a 2 hour stream, good lord
Commenting works.
Thank you so much, I'm pleased with the result. Also, the reception to the subtitles by the community has been amazing so I'm super happy about it.

@@SecretSleepoverSocietyI had a hunch commenting would work! Thanks again
I love the concept of cat scratch detergent tape.
How?!
COLOUR CODED SUBTITLES?!?!?!?!?!?!? :O SO COOL
I know I'm not the intended audience since I'm not HoH, just auditory processing issues, but the high vibrance on the colors for the subtitles against the black background makes it so I can't read it without eye pain
I know that's something hard to balance since some people can see high saturation more easily, but just to put it out there as a factor (I also don't know how high the actual saturation is, but having it on black makes it very bright for me)
I'm really enjoying watching this game though and appreciate all the work the community is doing to make SSS accessible!

My cat was so into watching your cats that she went behind my laptop to check whether they were real.
I love this game!
idk how to explain this but sometimes i just look at joy and think "that's a cow"
I had the exact same folder colours that Jacob mentioned in school, that's crazy.
“Big stack”. Oh you sweet child, Jacob.
i love this thumbnail so much
