"Walk This Way" was an old Aerosmith hit. This collab was unique, breathing new life into this song while helping to boost the popularity of RUN DMC & crossing over hip hop with rock.

Walk This Way was original Aerosmith.
Then with Run-DMC took it to a new level.

The guy screaming is Steve Tyler of Aerosmith. This is an Aerosmith song, their beat, their lyrics, already a classic hit song before this collaboration.

This collaboration really helped Aerosmith's popularity, which had been waning up to this point. Let's face it, their fan base (included myself) was getting older and the younger generations weren't interested into listening to most older music. This collab revitalized interest in Aerosmith.

The third member of Run DMC was Jam Master Jay, and I believe he originally wanted to sample "Walk This Way" by Aerosmith. At some point, it evolved into this funky collaboration. A boost for both groups, and an all-time favorite video. (Psst----Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler is father of actress Liv Tyler, aka "Arwen" ("Lord of the Rings").

Yeah, that's a cool story. Also, DMC begged they not to release it because they said it was hillbilly music

Although in the mid to late 70s you had the Furious Five, Grandmaster Flash, and Curtis Blow, nobody outside of the Bronx and upper Brooklyn had ever heard of them. 1981 brought us BLONDIE with the first rap to hit the national airwaves, and their band played a lot in Manhattans CBGB's club. Alongside of them would also be 2 experimental groups The New Romantics (headed by Adam Horowitz---Ad Rock) and THe Beastie Boys. In 1982, Herbie Hancock brought us ROCK IT, the first time we hear record scratching on the radio. THe Beasties got COOKIE PUSS released in 1984 and then got in a movie soundtrack COLORS (Sean Penn and Robert Duvall) and KRUSH GROOVE with RUN DMC. In 1986, Run DMC joined up with Aerosmith (whose numbers were low due to substance abuse difficulties, and Run DMC were trying to get noticed nationally.) and this was the biggest rap to come along since. It was also 1985-86 that people started to learn about G. M flash and Spoonie G ect and the Biggest selling rap album of ALL TIME was released, LICENSE TO ILL. Rap took about 10 years to get adopted (just a little bit) into mainstream music, and RunDMC and the Beastie Boys (and LL COOL J) were so talented, people had to take notice. This marks the beginning of raps acceptance into the American culture.

Dang you beat me to this, this is a great song, absolutely hysterical, love it, the best combo, I love this, this was big back in the day, have to take this off my list now, this is still funny all these years later, yes they used to dress like that back in the 80s and 90s, and a funny thing is that's exactly how Aerosmith was back in the day with the screaming as part of his styick, I believe this came out in 85-86, I still get the same reaction that you have when every time I watch this, this is absolutely still hysterical, I still love this all these years later, is the definitely the top 10 thanks this is great, a great song from Aerosmith is called "Dream On" I think you would like it.

I was already into rap including RUN DMC but I had grew up listening to rock like Aerosmith, so when this hit video hit MTV, it was nuts. Perhaps the first rap-rock song ever. And at the time, a meaningful show that we can all get along - perhaps through music.

In 1988-1991 introduced us to Public Enemy, Ice-T, and the west coast gangster rap crew NWA. That is when rap lyrics became darker and more controversial. Songs like "cop killer" and F.*k the Police were being banned and 2 live Crew were way to horny for stage shows and radio. Again, The Beastie Boys (Paul's Boutique and CHeck you head albums ) evened it out again and brought new phases of rap into the groove like CYPRESS HILL and 3rd Bass. The no laces was just a nod to the fact that when you go to RIKERS ISLAND jail in NYC, they take your shoelaces out so you don't hang yourself in your cell.

This was my first introduction to rap (I had always liked Aerosmith). So fun!!! This led me to Beastie Boys, Faith No More, later Red Hot Chili Peppers and 311 and Rage Against the Machine for that rock/rap combo. You may want to check out Aerosmith's "Dream On" and "Sweet Emotion" for other takes on the band.

Oh damn steve zirc was saying the same thing. They open the way for rap to become mainstream 🔥 ill do dream on next

  • @AndICanTalk2
    @AndICanTalk2 22 дні тому +2

Yeah this was the song that crossed rap into the mainstream. I knew more people who had loved rock, but didnt care, or even disliked rap, get into it, after hearing this song. It was essentially what opened the door for a lot of other rappers, in particular the Beastie Boys, who released License to Ill about 18 months or so after this.
And yes Aerosmith is great. Do their version of this song, then I would strongly suggest listening to Rag Doll, Dream On, Cryin, Amazing, and Sweet Emotion. All of those are bangers, and there are a dozen others. Great rock band.

You gotta do anthrax and Public Enemy. The song is called. Bring the noise. It’s a mix of rap and rock like this, but I think even better.

  • @PERKSreCAP

For more Aerosmith there’s dozens of hits to choose from. You e got to go Dream On but do the MTV 10th anniversary performance of the song. It has a complete orchestra and the fans doing the song. Steven Tyler’s scream is iconic and the scream at the end of that song is probably his best. Others to choose from are: Sweet emotion, Love in an Elevator, Dude Looks Like a Lady, Back in the Saddle, Same Old Song and Dance, Walk This Way (the original with just Aerosmith). There’s dozens more, those are a good start though.

This song was originally done by Aerosmith. When this came about Aerosmith had lost their recording contract, they had all been to rehab. One of the members of Run DMC came to the studio and while waiting for their studio time was listening to Aerosmith. It turned out their producer was also Aerosmith's. They worked out this collab. Steven Tyler, the singer in Aerosmith, credits the fact that Run-DMC agreed to this saved his band's career

When I was a kid growing up on a steady diet of Mtv, I thought Aerosmith was a fake band that was made up for this song. I knew Run DMC, but I didn't know about Aerosmith.

I hate politics but this was 1986. Yes we had our share of issues in the race category but not like today. So believe it when people say that someone, something, somewhere is intentionally sparking racism. It would die if left alone.
