The REAL/ULTIMATE Wemmershoek Traverse

The Wemmershoek Mountains make up the impressive skyline when driving on the N1 outbound from Cape Town towards Paarl. To cross this glorious range is a exciting and fun outing and many variations of the 'Wemmershoek Traverse' exists. Our mission was to traverse the range and tag all the major peaks. Starting at the 820m sign on Du Toitskloof Pass and ending in Franschoek.

How do you know where to go... Are there signs to point the way? Do you need a permit? Is there a website with a map?

Thanks. This is a off trail/bundu bash adventure. You pick a line and go. No trail or any signs. Total freedom.

Nice! How is conditions to do the traverse in this month (November)?

If there is water it will be great. I am concerned since it was already pretty dry. I would suggest doing a recce to Wemmershoek Peak and dropping down to the vlakte to see if there are some streams or pools running and sending that location to yourself so that you can find water. It is a very long way from the vlakte before Winterberg to that point and it was bone dry.

Me and my friend actually went and did the traverse the 16th Nov. Was an insane challenge with great views. We also did not get any water from the vlakte before Winterberg. Took us about 16h30 min to complete. Definitely underestimated how challenging it was going to be with all the bundu bashing, but we made it😅
