I’ve been mostly ambivalent to sub price increases in the past, usually they are small enough increases to groan but accept it. But this one is nuts and actually got me to cancel. $40 extra a year for Premium and no sign of any actual improvement was the straw that broke the camels back for me.
Yeah, I'll keep online gaming to my PC and not pay Sony anything. Not only have they *still* not decoupled online play and cloud saves from random monthly game grants, but they're also asking for more on PS+ while upping European new game pricing by 33% and cancelling features like PS+ collection.
A $10 across the board for more PS5 quality games would be reasonable (or even more if the service gets better), but this is crazy. Not even Nintendo has increased pricing for their old games* when re-released via collections and virtual console... PS+ Premium is exactly that, however.
On that note, PC is by far the best platform when it comes to choice and saving money. Steam has had free cloud saves since forever, for example, and Epic has weekly free giveaways. PS+ is vastly inferior and uncompetitive in contrast.

But sony tickled the whales and ponys pussy's saying they will get early access and it will pay for server stableabilty and sony does not own or run servers its the game companys for the games. Inflation has turned into a giant excuse to price gouge customers across multiple industries. This is just another instance of that.
Looks like people are commenting about inflation without studying finance..even if it’s at 5%.. you need to compound the years Sony didn’t raise the price in the past and the future years they will keep the same price..it would be more than 35%.. we can’t expect companies to add features and games when they wont be able to pay for proper talent as per the 2023 inflation salaries..

@@Matanumi But they won't, consumers are forced to pay if they want to play online, most people aren't gonna switch to PC. They are in a position where they can increase it as much as they want and a good portion of their consumers will pay.
All I know is that I haven't seen enough of the "it's morally correct to pirate Sony games" in the similar fashion when Nintendo announces anything.
To be fair, pirating Switch games is far, FAR easier than pirating PS5 games. Hell, there aren't even any functional PS4 emulators. Even the PS3 emulator is janky as hell

This made me so happy that I don't like online games all that much to begin with. Absolutely no way I would ever pay $60 a year for online, but this new price is so much worse.
The worst thing about it is we're forced to keep the subscription at least at the minimum for online play

When Plus Premium was announced, I finally thought "Ah, PS Plus is *finally* actually worth that $60 price tag" only to find out oops, that's going to be $120, and now $160 is just absurd, especially when for $50 a year on Switch I get six classic consoles, not to mention free DLCs.

....You know, I was considering requesting a PS5 for Christmas this year (more because it looks like developers are starting to wean off of PS4). But after this, I'm gonna have to 'really' think about this. Honestly I'm wondering, my God, what the hell happened to the Sony of 2013 when they laughed at Microsoft's blatant anti-consumer blurbs surrounding the Xbox One. It's almost like Don Mattrick or at least an expy of him took over Sony.

I mean, don't forget that Microsoft's blatant anti-consumer blurbs with the Xbox One came after utterly dominating most of the PS360 generation and having the cultural cache of the moment. This is how companies *are* . There was a leak a while back, in the tabletop gaming space, that Hasbro execs (Hasbro own Wizards of the Coast, who make Magic the Gathering and D&D) looked at customers as basically obstacles between them and what they viewed as already their money. That needing to *sell* a customer on something was this offense and speedbump in the way of their desired profiting. Never trust a corporation.

I think it says a lot that it now costs more to play Street Fighter 6 online on PS5 than it does to buy a copy of Street Fighter 6.

They have an ego that needs to be knocked down a peg, one of the reason they lost the activision blizzard acquisition is due to that fact.
Gamepass is still a solid enough deal with the price increase at this point. No idea if the price will increase next year, but I absolutely think it's more affordable/tolerable than what Sony just pulled

Sony is going to lose even more money than they think. Remember that certain shooter that they fought tooth-and-nail over to try to keep on their system, well hey it's going to be on Xbox and you get more with game pass lmao. Yeah I cancelled gamepass ultimate too they increased the price also its $204 a year now its ridiculous. I cancelled ps plus and ultimate. I’ll only pay gamepass core from time to time for online play on xbox otherwise majority of the time will be enjoying single player games 👍🏼
@@xacvhFAs I mean the only reason why I have inside those expansion pass is because I know enough people to make it worth it. Also because of being a speed Runner I need the family plan so I can keep a second account for speedrunning without having to constantly delete my own casual stuff. Although on a positive note the expansion pack family plan does make for a easy holiday gift.
This is why I've never supported online play being gated behind a paid subscription (I feel similarly about subscription MMOs but that's another issue). When online multiplayer is and always has been free on PC as well as legacy consoles of the past (3DS, PS3, Vita, Wii U), not to mention cloud saves on Steam, yet you have to pay regularly just to keep having access to it on consoles, it's really hard to justify.
While I don't pay for NSO either for the same reason, I can kind of see a bit more value there compared to PS+ as it's way cheaper for online + cloud saves, and you get games from legacy platforms even at the basic tier of GB, NES & SNES (this one has the best value - I used up a 7 day free NSO trial and completed Yoshi's Island that way). And if you're getting the Family Pass it's even cheaper.
As someone whose never paid for NSO or PS Plus (only ever used the free trials) you’re exactly right, and the push for paid online just made me go to singleplayer, local multiplayer, and free to play games instead.

It’s reassuring to know I’m not the only one who has fallen off of ps+, cause as they say here, it’s not that it’s not worth it to anyone, but for me I was like “wow, none of this appeals to me… that sucks”. And now to charge $30 plus more to each tier, it’s crazy!

You kinda have to for online. I do like the ps+ extra tier just having loads of ps4 games there for free but premium tier needs way way more. With this price hike, they need more features to justify this hike.
I will say this, sony making the ps4's online paywalled behind PS+ is what made me switch to PC as my main gaming platform. I imagine that a lotta people might just do the same due to this price jump.

I think we're gonna be seeing a lot of members either switch to cheaper subscriptions if they've got Extra/Premium, or just cancel their subscription outright. Sony's not offering _anything_ to justify a price increase, let alone one that drastic. So what reason do the customers have to pay that new price? Even for those who really, _really_ want to play a lot of online games, and whose only option is Playstation, there's no reason for them to get any subscription higher than Essential.
Smart of Sony to raise the price now while all the ponies are distracted with whining about Starfield.

I’m especially angry with the service due to a major glitch I’ve had with it and how utterly useless their customer service is. They’ve really entered that late ps2/early ps3 arrogance phase again and then some.
Oh and they’ll probably announce they’re fully closing the ps3 and vita stores in the next few weeks with only 24 hours notice.
Playstation just hasn't been the same under Jim Ryan. The disrespect for their own history, closure of Japan Studio, the general disregard towards japanese game devs, the lack of creative and original exclusive games and the feeling that the higher ups these days just don't have any passion or care for the games themselves but just how much money they can make off of them. Instead of trying to find their own niche and offering a game experience that only they can provide (similar to Nintendos strategy) they try so hard to be like Xbox and fight a war with them, that they simply can't win because they don't have the financial resources of Microsoft. It needs a big change in leadership at SIE to refocus on what made them so unique and interesting in the past compared to the current and last gen.

I'm canceling now. I pretty much kept it for easy access of my PSVita Cloud saves but I barely played anything online on my PS4. All my friends play on Xbox or PC nowadays and so am I.
I wanted to get a PS5 someday when it gets cheaper but so far all games I'm interested in for it are purely single player. But that console is the only one without offline save backup options.
It's so frustrating that they wanna charge that much for cloud saves. Not gonna happen. I'm definitely turned off from buying a PS5 for now.
About 13:30 it has nothing to do with infastructure. Free to Play games can be played online without PS+ and FFXIV is an exception to this rule. Basically same as NSO and Xbox Gold.
The basic plan is a flat out no. I’m disgusted at the other 2, but at least they still have sizable libraries from what you pay for.

Premium is a huge waste of money. There are very few classic ps1 and ps2 games worth playing and all of the ps3 titles are still streaming only of course. Extra is okay, but I’m not sure if I’ll renew given these huge price increases. Insane.
It's more about the price for me after this raise. I need basic to play my games, I don't really care about sonys games, they were just a nice bonus

I’d been on the fence to upgrade to PS Plus Premium over the last year, but it looks like Sony has made that choice a lot easier now. Honestly considering canceling my Essential subscription now, since I was planning on getting Game Pass soon anyway (and I rarely ever play online)

The PS3’s problem wasn’t greed it was being overambitious, it anything it’s the PS4 that was greedy with axing backwards compatibility and charging you for your own Internet.

Yes they are back. PS3 they expected consumers to pay a ridiculous, unprecedented amount on a console and literally told people to get a job lmao and save for it. Believed to be untouchable, brimming with arrogance.
Same attitude now with this increase, the new portable requiring their proprietary $150 and $200 headset and not compatible with a similarly named PS5 Pulse headset (people are going to buy the wrong set for sure).
Not to mention a bunch of other stuff like blocking manual PS5 save transfers, blocking cheaper PS4 controllers for PS5 games (also for some odd reason there are no cheap 3-rd party controllers like PS4, Switch and Xbox). Charging a crossplay tax that hurts devs and the game longevity, screwing over indie devs and not even letting them put THEIR OWN games on sale etc, etc, etc
If they believe they can get away with it they will try.
While sony is ultimately the bad guy in this scenario, it should also be said:
Companies only do things like this because they can get away with it. Gamers need to realize this and acceot some of thr blame, and stop supporting such practices.
From horse armor dlc, to buying into pre-order bonuses just for the game to be extra buggy at launch, to these subscription services... If you willingly accept these things as normal, you're part od the problem.

This is Price Gouging at its finest! I don't even want to pay $160 to play the classic PS titles even though I'm still waiting for the original Crash titles and some other PS1 titles I've played when I visited my cousin or at the hospital recovering from my operations.
Welp Sony killed it for me. I haven't had ps plus in a while but I was planning to renew when they had a deal. Sony raising the price of PS essential to $80 when $60 was already expensive ruins whatever brand loyalty I had to this company. I'm to the point where I'm tired of giving away money to services that shouldnt require it. I'm glad I bought a steam deck because this playstation might be my last.
Sell it used now - buy it back in a few years for cheaper + with all the single player exclusives included. Smartest thing you can do.

Switch online offering over 200 games with online for $50 is looking pretty good right now. Especially if you're interested in retro games. If you don't like retro games you can get by on the $20 a year and still get some retro games with online.

A price hike "makes sense" (in that every company is taking the piss and pretending inflation is the reason they're raising prices instead of the real reason of "they want to"), but this is way more than I would've expected. It comes across to me as another absurd Jim Ryan decision where he doesn't know what he's doing, like nearly killing Ps3 and Vita or trying to create various live service games (when only a handful of them have been notable successes)
I never got why people always try to claim CEOs that don’t pretend to be your friend have no use and no clue and fail upwards.
You can subjectively not like Jim Ryan, and I mean he has zero charisma so he makes it easy, but to claim he has no idea what he’s doing is kind of absurd.
He’s been at PlayStation since 1994 and is the reason the brand is so popular in Europe to begin with, not to mention their marketshare this gen has increased, with PS5 ahead of PS4, and Xbox Series behind the Xbox One, on top of the fact the games and media on PS5 are being critically acclaimed and sell insane numbers.

I do actually get plenty of use out of the extra tier with a ton of games I've started and beaten since it's addition. Glad my sub paid its renewal before this, but I may be dropping out when it runs down. The Premium tier is a complete joke, and I haven't felt any incentive to get on that for what... a pitiful collection of classic titles, access to trials, and streaming that I never use? If they're going to increase the price, the only thing I can see making it worth it is having Extra library titles not expire every few months, or get newer releases coming on it frequently.
And this comes after months of Sony fearmongering about Microsoft becoming a manopoly and doing this exact thing

I like ps+ and have been using it a ton since getting a PS5 but I canceled over this just in solidarity. Pure insanity and I'll reward them with a resub if they fix it
Assistmedoom/Matt from yo!videogames attributes decisions like this to what he calls "Arrogant Sony", where they make dumb and/or anti-consumer decisions as a result of them getting complacent as the market leader. He coined that term 6 years ago now, and that has only aged better with time.
Arrogant Sony is what led to the PS3’s initial launch, until they got a much needed wake up call. Feeling like they need a humbling nowadays too

What led to the PS3’s launch was overambition and copying the PS2 too heavily.
The PS2 was difficult to develop for, had the DVD feature, and backwards compatibility with its popular predecessors and sold gangbusters and is the most popular system ever.
The PS3 was difficult to develop for, had the Blu-Ray feature (wasn’t nearly as popular as DVD), and backwards compatible with its popular predecessors yet it is the most hated and unpopular console of all time. 😂
@@ThomastheDankEngine8900 maybe you forgot that it also launched at $600, launched a year after the 360 had launched at almost half that price, and had marketing campaigns that made general consumers confused about why they would want a PS3. Remember when they told people to get a second job to purchase a PS3? Not even to mention the complete lack of compelling software in its launch period.
“Over ambition” is just a nice way to say that they were arrogant and thought they could sell any box with “PlayStation” on it because of how good the PS2 performed. And things didn’t turn around until they redesigned the console, cut its price, developed killer software and basically relaunched the system with a new marketing campaign. Let’s call a spade a spade here.

The PS3 also launched with many features out of the box that you had to pay for separately on the 360, like Internet and HD-DVD, plus a paid online service.
Why else do you think you got the barebones PS4 with zero BC, paid online, and similarly horrendous launch lineup of exclusive games to follow up?
If anything its the PS4 that’s arrogant, but the Xbox One fumble covers it up.
Gamers don’t care whether something is greedy, just if its trendy to hate on it.
Hence why the PS4 is the console everyone creams their panties over despite not having a single killer app until Bloodborne and lacking several features the first three Sony consoles had.
The only thing I’ll admit is gamers are bandwagoners whose only consistency is that they’ll hate whatever is easy to hate with no rhyme or reason, which is why the PlayStation 3 to this day is still hated by all gamers and PS4 universally loved.

This is so true, I *LITERALLY* got the highest tier ps plus after Christmas 2022 when I got my PS5 [I skipped PS4] just to play the remaster of Ape Escape 2 [stupid I know but I love that game to death]. Cue my absolute amazement when I boot it up and not only is it incredibly GLITCHY for no discernible reason, it’s not even the original NTSC version (OG Pokémon cast voices)!! Absolutely let down. I will not be renewing, I do not play online so no loss and if I want to I could get a temp pass. People being mad that Nintendo WITH expansion is only 66$ per year (CAD) now seems cute. So disappointed.

I am old and come from a PC gaming background stretching back to the 90s, the idea of paying for any multiplayer offends me deeply and I do it reluctantly with Nintendo. At this price? If I had a PS5 it would be a single player only box and the other benefits seem so intentionally gimped that it SUPER doesn't seem worth it.
I feel the same way I do about the NSO Expansion, it just does not make sense logically to me. You're paying for the mandatory entry fee of playing games online on the console, and the games are free bonus extras to sweeten the deal, paying a subscription just for access to more games is of no interest to me, why would I ever do that and not just put that money towards the games I actually want? They can claim a price hike is towards the promise of more better games offered on the service, but when that effects the lowest tier that's simply a giant middle finger to every person who's mainly subscribing to play online games. Microsoft set an awful precedent with XBL to begin with, this never should've been normalized in the first place, and now PC gaming is rapidly becoming the only sensible route.

I don't understand this move at all either unless they come out announcement like ea play going in extra and they ramp up backwards compatibility. Also they have had few notable day 1 in plus this month had Moving Out 2 and Sea of Stars, couple months ago Humanity, Tchia, and Meet your Maker and then there was Stray that just left after a year exclusive.

For a little clarity/correction on ps classic games output. They release at least 2-3 games a month since the ps now rebrand. And for the Extra tier with the ps4/5 games whenever y’all look at the library of games there is value. But any that price hike can kick rocks
That isn’t true, there have been months where there was not a single new classic game added to Premium. Unless you are counting PS3 streaming titles as well. Mystic on his channel just recently documented this.
In my experience all free to play games are free online on consoles. You can play Halo Infinite multiplayer online without Xbox live for example, so I think that’s how it works

As someone who rarely got PS Plus previously because of the price when I was a kid and had no consistent income, I would rather spend my money on more full games than PS Plus. I got it one time from my uncle for Christmas but that was it until I got a good deal of Extra for the same price as Essential and I have been having a good time with it, but these price increases are just too much for me now. As someone who does like having the monthly games and is planning on playing SF6 for the long forseeable future, I'm buying another year of Essential at my local Gamestop to stack up so that way I'm good from paying this crazy price hike
Aaand this is why I'll stick to PC for online multiplayer-focused games instead of Sony platforms. As for the Nintendo side of things, as bad as NSO is, at least it's relatively cheap compared to PS Plus, so I don't have to pay as much for just playing online...

The price increase is too much. $10 more for the Essential tier would have been easier to take, but even then I would want them to wait until after year 2 of the revamp before increasing prices.
That said, this reaction to the increase is a bit much. Maybe it is because they don't seem to know much about about the new PS+ (the Extra tier typically has the same amount of games as GP and sometimes more, with the exception of 2 months, the classic catalog gets updated monthly, Stray, Tchia, and other games have come to one tier on their release date, etc). Maybe it is because neither of them are PS+ subscribers. Maybe it is them ignoring the fact GP console is $132/year and you don't get on-line play but you get about the same number of games as the Extra tier at $135/year with online play. Maybe it is because the classic catalog was getting better (or so I was told by those who care more than me). Maybe it is they were mostly mute when GP price increased. It is likely all of the above, but this is one of the biggest overreactions I have seen so far from a respectable organization. However, the news is still relatively new so that could change.
Im so glad i sold my PS5 and bought a Series X a week before this news. Absolutely no excuse for Sony's despicable greed and lack of value.

Yeah I rather pay extra to have pc banned from online play with consoles. Nobody likes crossplay with pc nerds ruining online experience for everyone with their cheats. 80% of games on pc are filled with hackers. Half of them don’t work day 1. Pc requirements for 80% of games are ridiculous. 70% of the time playing on pc is tinkering with options and settings to make it run decent. Also gaming on console is hassle free and straightforward. I rather play on console laying down on a big comfortable couch/bed with a 65” OLED than sitting down in a uncomfortable trash office chair 3 inches away from a 28” monitor. Etc. I have so many more reasons as to why I like gaming on a console more than pc

This is crazy, I've never once had PS+ in all my years of having a PS4. I don't have a PS5 yet, but this is really turning me off.

Having just watched the new HD upload of Sony's 2006 E3, I just want to remind everyone that PSN started with online play for FREE so now seeing that the basic is $80 is ridiculous. People rag on NSO+EP, and rightly so but this is beyond that.
I'm not watching the rest of this video after the first minute. If they report on it, then fine, but the price change is for annual prices. They have 1 and 3 month options. Although it's crappy from Sony, but there's still other options.
I'm glad I switched over to just being PC and Nintendo during the last generation.

Im so happy im leaving console gaming. The issue is most feel that they’re stuck with these consoles, you aren’t. You can pay a little extra and get a prebuilt gaming PC and not be forced to pay outrageous prices just to access something youve already paid for, and can typically get better games that are ACTUALLY FREE!
Bought my first prebuilt in 2018 and slowly swapped everything out since except the case and mobo haha I got lucky as hell with the tuf x470 they just kept supporting it

The main reason those titles from Epic Games (Fortnite, Rocket League, Fall Guys) don’t require PS Plus is because they’re free to play, all three main console platforms don’t require the subscription for Free to Play, which is lucky for me because I also like Fall Guys on PS5 but Sony is out of their god damn mind if they think I’m paying 80 dollars minimum.

I think the most disgusting thing is they hid it away in a Plus post for the free games and then the day after the price hike they sent out an email informing people of it...AFTER the fact so people unaware can't stock up on the old price. With PlayStation Plus, Xbox Live and Nintendo Switch Online, only free-to-play games are exempt. Has nothing to do whether something uses the console manufacturer's servers or not (most, if not all, run their own servers for their games with only using the manufacturer's APIs ("servers") to check whether they got the subscription on, which account details etc.)
This is at least what I've observed hearing of interviews of indie games and AAA games or news about it, no direct or indirect experience with them.
It has to do with companies wanting free money for doing absolutely nothing.
They HAVE to put PlayStation exclusives available day 1 on there to justify it. I have a feeling they wont.
