I always remember the flaps took a ridiculous time to move. The mountains weren't visible but you'd crash is you flew over them below the top of their peaks. I had a bit of code added so you could use a joystick with it as it didn't have support by default. Fun times!
I was tempted to dig out my agf joystick interface (the one where you can select which keys to use for a joystick), but thought I’d try it with the cursors. At least for the next title (for the Amiga) I can use a mouse.
I think most of us with a ZX81 ended up with Flight Sim as there wasn't a lot of choice (as GlassDarky mentioned, it was a few years later than you thought!)

Got same game on ZX80 or 81, and 16K addon and thermal printer.....my first computer at around 1977
It was released on the ZX81 in 1982 and on the Spectrum in 1983 (no ZX80 version) so you're going back a bit far with 1977 🙂

@@GlassDarkly OK .....confuse with my first Electronic Chess Board, and Z80 was the processor...and the XZ81 got Z80A inside i think
