@Thee One every one throughout the course of history enslaved every one. Not a single race or creed is exempt from that fact. Who do you think the Europeans brought there slaves from funny enough it was other African tribes that enslaved weaker ones to enslave them so both races were involved with it. Also white people were inslave at the same time being sold into it to pay off debts and such working on samer farms. A famous one is of a French man whos parents sold him into slavery to pay of debt owed he would become in later life on of the most brutal pirates to of ever exist.

@Thee One are you serious? how little is your world view if you think Europeans are the only ones that do that hell we are not even the top!
Mao great leap forward caused the death of around 30-60 million Chinese. you have country's that have committed genocide in recent history that are not from the EU.
the biggest being the CCP genocide of a Muslim minority and forced labour of Tibetans. not mentioning the shit they did when they took it over. hell WW2 the Japanese committed atrocity's that matched Hitlers. so fun fact we are not the only ones who have done shit not even the worst so before your racist start lumping in ever EU person into the category or even wanting us to take responsibility for past actions that the people alive have no involvement in just remember every nation on this planet has committed horrendous crimes in the past . none are exempt.

I can't believe people think it's okay to compare "class" to "race". Seeing a lot of comments of how about working class white people? You can change your social status but you can't change your race. Talking about racial discrimination against Blacks should not be perceived as a dismissal of White-people problems.
If you feel that you are discriminated because of your race or status, talk about. Do something about it. Stop disparaging others who are trying to address this disparity!

E.g. the recent pandemic just showed your healthcare disparities where a black person is less likely to contract COVID-19 but more likely to die from it than a White or Asian individual. Do not mistake highlighting issues affecting the Black community as a basis of gaining preferential treatment.

But the issue is that black people's issues are often framed alongside 'working class' issues, or issues of poverty. It's the framing of those people who see a systemic racial issue in the country that are causing this problem - because they consistently claim that black people have some inherent socio-economic disadvantage that no others have.

I'm a fresher just started at Cam. I'm not a person of colour but I am from a non traditional background. I'm already struggling with the culture and inherent privilege, I can't imagine some of the difficulties the dimension of race and racism would add to that. These students are an inspiration, the only way the culture of this place will change however is with sheer numbers. Until the proportions of working class students and students of colour increases significantly, the 'improvements' are just superficial.

Complaining is easy. A black person can simply call a faculty racist and get more marks in an exam, it's easy. You can get the grade. But complaining about race won't lead you to learn from the institution. You won't see black ppl taking Computer Science, Physics, Engineering etc because you need hard work, perseverance and dedication. Claiming Cambridge is racist and then claiming you want to go there is an anomaly. These students can just choose a university in Africa if they felt so hurt by racism or representation. Stop pandering and GENUINELY try to take advantage of the opportunity. Not many students are lucky to get into Cambridge, whether white or black.

@Paul Sebastian It's not about intelligence. Science has proven that race and intelligence aren't correlated, but having access to better education will allow you to become more intelligent and knowledgeable. Most poor people are poor because of the very same barriers, not intelligence. Also, you can't say people are working their way up to mansions, most people inherit those kinds of things. Inheriting a mansion is obviously unrelated to intelligence and mental capacity.

Looking at my year photograph from 1984, there were no black faces at all, and just a handful of brown or yellow. Black British students rarely attend public schools, and predominantly grow up in inner cities, and come from economically and socially disadvantaged communities, in which academic achievement is low. Young black people encounter many barriers to academic attainment, and outside the worlds of sport and entertainment, have fewer role models for success. Cambridge by its very nature is an elite institution, and democratising access to the opportunities that it offers requires the institution itself to make efforts to broaden access. That does not mean giving places to people of lower ability on the basis of their skin colour, but encouraging bright students from all backgrounds to apply, and reassuring them that they will be welcomed and supported if they succeed in securing a place. These kids deserve their places, probably more so than many of their peers from the likes of Eton and Westminster. They have a great deal to offer to their fellow classmates by broadening the diversity of the student population, and they will probably give more back to society too, as they go on to their careers, as role models for generations to come. Why would we not want this to happen? Why should it not be a matter of legitimate interest and concern? Why would the BBC, as the national broadcaster, not give its journalists the editorial space to consider the issue? Because we resent the successes of anyone that doesn't look like we do? Not good enough, not by a long chalk.

    • @myth6658
      @myth6658 4 роки тому +7

The BadderMan, Explain I actually don’t understand which is why I’m asking/commenting. For some reason Britons feel disenfranchised, as if they’re the “minority” and have a perception that they have less rights than “BAME”. In reality, these students deserved their place at Cambridge both the TSA and STEP are incredibly rigorous and if for some reason you believe Caucasians are being discriminated against you can both litigate or ask Cambridge for the test scores that these students achieved to see if they received any preferential treatment. It bewilders me why people feel the way they do the Equality Act is a safeguard not just for “BAME” but equally for White Britons. The animosity that is growing between “BAME” and the working class is the fault of right- wing media and the middle class. If you saw the BLM marches which resulted in violence and vandalism the majority of the people that committed these acts were in fact white not black but for some reason a sub-strata of the populous is being vilified for these acts. The second issue of contention seems to be Brexit, the people that voted for this seem to want to stop immigration. Both the right and the left can agree that the mass immigration of the EU was unsustainable but Bojo and his comrades managed to convince the public that this was the solution. In reality, all the British public voted for was a worse economy, more migrants/refugees and less sovereignty. 1.5 trillion has moved out of the city of London to Luxembourg in the past 2 years, no job growth in financial services within the U.K. yet in the EU it’s growing at 5%. More migrants due to influx of illegal migrants through the channel but international obligations prevent the U.K. from doing anything to stop this so the problem is only going to be exacerbated when we leave. Less sovereignty as we have the likes of Dominic Cummings in office yet the anti-eu brigade were after the unelected officials in the EU.
In the end the uneducated bunch that voted for brexit because they felt they were getting “replaced” have only hurt themselves. This is as we’ll be replacing white polish/Romanians with Indians, Carribeans and middle easterners to fill the skill shortages. In reality nothings changing no one is being “replaced” or no global elite are after whites. Societies are changing just as the world is, I suggest you pick up a book and love thy neighbour. Or purchase acres of land and get to work starting a new nation in reality nothing will change you’ll just be left behind .
      TL;DR
Those that voted for Brexit are receiving none of what they requested.

Nobody of colour generally grows up in white neighborhoods as the piece expressed. Obama grew up in Hawaii. His parents thought it best from drowning up in America. Pepperdine, Columbia, and Harvard still didn't change people's views to be fully accepted. Until he became President!!! He was still used because he didn't have much experience when he came out of Chicago!!! The 'Party' decided to use him to GWT their agenda through. Still happening today. So, maybe quite the insults and open your eyes to whose handling society. Any different with Boris??? The white privileged blond boy Ken Doll and his trusted hardliner Tories??? So even if what you were saying was even slightly true (which, to be clear, it’s isn’t) your point wouldn’t make sense anyway. The Jews were used as a scape goat so that the nazis could unite the country against them and under their leadership, none of it was actually true. The racial disparities we see between black and white Britons however, are real and legitimate, they can be quantified and studied. There is hard, factual evidence. I used to live and work in Cambridge (not at the University itself), but I was regularly invited for dinners and festivities at the Colleges and Depts. I thought at the time that it was pretty diverse, with fellows, PhD students and staff from many foreign countries: numerous European countries, from North and South America, Middle East and massive numbers from South and East Asia (I even became acquainted with someone from Bhutan). In hindsight, there were not many very dark faces present at the colleges (although the range of skin colours varied from very pale white to wheatish brown, every shade in between). Gestures of politeness and courtesy were every where.
In my capacity as an amateur sociologist: I think that many Afro-Caribbean and African students simply start school and university with a huge handicap, i.e. the lack of parents who are encouraging their children to do better at school and often, they are socially deprived as well. The Black students portrayed in the report prove to be the exception (having very supportive parents and so on).
To make matters worse, Blacks in Britain tend to be relatively poor, there are no wealthy Black people (yet) who may have forked out money to pay for the construction of new buildings or scholarships at Cambridge. In a nutshell, that's is perhaps the reason that Black students tend to be picked on (read: discriminated) by other university members (regardless of ethnicity): they are usually associated with poverty rather than with wealth ??

Is your Sociological observation based in research. Many white children don't have encouraging parents. RESEARCH shows WHITE MALES are the most disadvantaged in schools NOT BLACKS. You're just sulking it out of your thumb.

I see a lot of comments that address the concept of admitting students based on only merit such that race needn’t be factored in.
I understand the intent behind such comments. In a world where (up until the point of university applications) life has been a level playing field, this would generate equal opportunity/ odds for all applicants, irrespective of race.
However, the face that life preceding university applications isn’t equal must be addressed and considered.
    To name a few:
    - Unequal access to support at home
    - Unequal quality of education provided at school
    - Unequal exposure to interview/ entrance exam preparation
    - Unequal access time extra curricular activity
If we plot these discrepancies on a spectrum and consistently see a single race fall on one side of the spectrum it must be addressed that in order for individuals from this race to perform at their maximum potential (a level of performance that meets the standards set out by prestigious institutions) they must work far harder than their more privileged counterparts.
In such a situation it becomes appropriate to adjust the requirements for entry in accordance to potential as opposed to outcome.
This is why race, background and socioeconomic factors must be part of the consideration. Merit is an outcome of circumstance. Potential removes the individual from their circumstance.

The problem here can be understood by just looking at this comment section alone. The Neoliberal elites have divided the regular people among racial lines by paying attention to race overtly. Meanwhile, the Far Right opportunists have taken advantage of the situation to spread their racial politics among the working class as a reaction to this Neoliberal divisiveness. The real solution is to make these elite universities more accessible to the working class, which would eliminate racism along with it as well, and will discredit both the racial dogma of the Far Right as well as the Neoliberal racial gatekeeping of the Centrist elites

The 2019/20 year at Cambridge was 26.8% BAME, and 3.4% black. That's exactly in line with the British population for black students, and above the population average for other non-white groups. How are they being discriminatory there?
What should be considered is that the UK's university makeup is 8% black and 22.6% BAME overall, with 77.3% of students being white. The nation as a whole is 84% white. What does this show us? Well, for one, it shows that white people are either financially or educationally being disadvantaged in the UK with regard to higher education. The black population of the UK is over-represented by 150% in higher education, compared to other non-white ethnicities being over-represented by only about 50%. However, "elite" universities like Imperial, Oxford, and Cambridge, have significantly higher proportions of non white students, mostly as a result of giving far more places to overseas students, especially Asian, mostly Chinese.
So basically, the numbers break down as follows: Cambridge is not disadvantaging black students at all. Asians are over-represented at elite universities (duh, who would have guessed that), black people are vastly over-represented at UK universities in general, and white people are getting the short end of the stick, but are still being labelled as the problem. Hmmm
