Feather sticks are excellent to start every fire. I also find making feather-stick relaxing and use them to test edge sharpness and edge geometry.

Thank you for this video. I have been looking for a good video on how to make feather sticks for a while. Your explanation is clear and easy to follow and doesn't waste any time. I didn't realize that a convex grind helped. Finally, making two different type of feather sticks, primary and secondary, makes so much common sense and yet I bet a lot of people, like me, never thought of it. You more than earned my subscription.

Interesting concept, the primary and secondary featherstick
You guys are unbelievable. You have such advanced skills at a young age. You certainly break the stereotypes we have in America of Europeans as soft people, dependent on government and unable to do anything for yourself. I have learned very much from watching your videos recently. I just subscribed. I have always admired the Dutch people. You helped finance our Revolution and I'll never forget Dutch troops being deployed to help us during Hurricane Katrina. Many European countries talk in platitudes about America, but they never take action. The Dutch have been great allies. Thanks too, for buying F-35's from us. They are great planes and will put your Air Force on the cutting edge of technology. Keep up the good work with your channel. Thanks.
Thanks a lot mate for your compliments and nice comment. We really really appreciate it! In the city we do have many of the 'stereotypes' that think milk is produced in a factory. In the Netherlands we have almost 0% chance of a natural disaster and I don't think something very bad will happen here soon (probably why a lot of us became 'soft') but we just don't want these kinda skills to be forgotten. Besides that I find it almost a must to learn these things. A lot of bushcraft skills were actually primary survival skills that everyone once knew now that we only need money we don't seem to need these skills anymore. I just refuse to live like that. There is still a lot to learn for us but we like to share what we know.
The Netherlands was really in need for some new planes. We were literally cannibalizing our F16's for repairs.
My forest is under a flying route so I expect to see some of them flying over soon. We have a lot of Apache training going on here right now.

I'd say not a lot has changed to be honest. I still use primary and secondary feather sticks some times. But I prefer small spruce twigs over secondary feather sticks. I'm also a bit more controlled than back then but I think a new video would be mainly the same with a lot more theatrics hahaa

I have a super easy time doing long, thin feathers with my scandi knife. But of course I should od whatever works for me, right?
My axe is sharp enough for feathering as well, and when I only the axe, it's pretty good in a pinch.

Good point about convex vs scandi, however you didn't mention scandivex. Much easier for beginners than a flat grind w/convexed edge like you are using.

I find my Bark River (convex) knives make the fastest/easiest feathers.

Does convex feel bad when woodworking? The only convex I have is an opined folder, so I can’t really get good leverage when cutting things, when my moras get dull, I still feel like they can cut wood, but when my opinel gets dull, I feel like it just glides off the wood. Does convex on a full tang knife bite the wood well? I really need to know as I’m getting a bark river soon and I want to get something that can carve wood and process meat without getting chips.

Wow you made it look so easy... I tried for 20minutes to put my feather sticks on fire with the magnesium stick( however it's called) with no success :( Maybe sticks were a bit moist but I don't think so
Say Heah M&M, I just bought a S.O.G. Pillar Fix Blade. It reminds me of what some of Tunnel Rat's used in Vietnam. a Camel Double Hump Back Signature Design by S.O.G. But the Pillar is a 5" blade. Now I have (3) Double Camel Back's, my Seal Pup Elite. It's a AUS8a. But the way S.O.G. Cryo Tempers then is super. Then I also have the Trident 2.0 also in AUS8a. and again a pretty good edge retention on AUS8a. But the S.O.G. Pillar is a 5" blade but in the CPM S35Vn a pretty good stainless but a true Double Canel Hump Back blade. Yeah, Puh-lease do one of your not so funny videos on the sort of new S.O.G. Pillar Fix Blade. My S.O.G. Pillar will team great with my speedy EZ KUT WoW Folding Saw with the Scabbard that's sold separately, but well worth it because if the quality of it. Why disconnecting the feathers from the stick? It kinda goes against the word itself - feather-stick...arent feathers supposed to light the stick while they burn? I really dont see the point in cutting those in half. Anyways - your secondary feathers are amazing, never seen them done so well...that must burn like hell itself. Oh and btw - it is possible to make both primary and secondary feathers on one stick - make the 1st ones big, the last ones thin so they ignite from the spark easier, but your idea has something to it too
Say Heah Guy's my Skookum Bush Tool and now my Fallkniven H-1 are great at making feather's. But I started using my Serrated Benchmade CKS 156 in D2 I ordered by mistaje, I wanted a plain edge, But recently I found out serration's make very good featger's. ,, .

How often do you buy a knife
probably about 1 knife each month. So with my and Mikkie on this channel that makes 2 new knives a month but. that is only since recently. we can pay our knives with the money we make from youtube and sharpening knives for other people.

I've tried many times feathersticking with my Enzo Trapper O1 (it has a scandi edge) and I've found it very hard (moreover the wood was often moist and not uniform in grain). I was thinking of buying a convex edge knife with a better steel and was looking for the Fallkniven F1d with CoS steel as an all arounder knife with better featherstiking qualities and far morr better edge retention. Can it be a good choice?
enzo's are great knives.. you can just sharpen your trapper on a strop and it will get convexed over time. i have an enzo elver, they did an amazing job on the 12c27.. awesome heat treat, 58 HRC.. takes a wicked edge and holds it well.. i convexed mine on a strop, now it performs even better! the edge geometry on the scandi enzo's is very good! imo the enzo knives are a much better value than fallkniven.. but if you really want a semi-custom go for a bark river... the mini-aurora in 3v is a great choice if you like carbon steels.

How can you say it's easier to make feathersticks with a convex edge vs a scandi edge???? Scandi grinds are made for wood working, they are ideal for feathersticks, they offer so much more control in your cuts...
A scandi wants to bite into the wood which is ideal for carving indeed but with a convex it doesn't want to bute into the wood and kinda slides over the wood making it very easy to get these thin feathers. But I think it'll also be a matter of what one is used to.
Thanx for the replay. It might be just my personal preference, i might be influenced by my friends and colleagues who love outdoors, but we all think a scandi is easier to control when making feather sticks. Agreed, scandis bite in to the wood easier then convex, but they also have a huge straight bevel on which to balance it when shaving fine feathers. Anyways, keep making great clips guys!
