Trafalgar Law This very book goes into why and it apparently wasn't a trademark issue. David Rosen didn't like the name Mega Drive and pushed to have it renamed Genesis because he saw it as a new beginning for the company. Sega of Japan wasn't fond of Genesis, but they eventually relented and let Sega of America rebrand it. But I'm with everyone else. Mega Drive was a cooler name.
Viewing this from a 2018 perspective, Drew's final words in the video seem strangely prescient. Spooky...
Jeff: "It comes with a pouch or something...some illustrations..."
Drew: "Cloth map."
Jeff: "Cloth map."
jeff never fails to impress with his video game encyclopedia
Oh man, the Mega Drive had some really fantastic covers. Ecco, Golden Axe, Shinobi, etc.
Much love for the Mega Doraibu! I totally agree with Jeff that they should've kept it the MegaDrive, while Genesis is still a pretty good name though.
