Really looking forward to finally picking this up! The Krakoa Era New Mutants, Hellions, Cable, and Excalibur have been some of my favourite X-comics of all time. I know people are still feeling paranoid at Hickman leaving the office but i’ve really enjoyed the work of the other writers in the office and I’m really excited for some upcoming projects.
Shouldn't 'Inferno' really have been included in the recent 'X-Men by Jonathan Hickman' omni? There was certainly room for another 220 pages to that omni and it would have finished the Hickman run nicely. Looks like Marvel were being a bit greedy splitting 'Inferno' into its own small book.
Agreed. The omni should of included His X-men run, HOX/POX, His New Mutants issues and Inferno. At the very least Marvel should release a box set of all the books in hardcover.
I’ve been waiting to really jump into this run for all the books to come out. I read hox and pox when it came out but I reread it now I’m almost through Hick-men omni, this is coming out at the perfect time. Great review as always Omar. Always giving the information real collector’s want. This is the best place to find out about the books themselves from a collectors point of view. Thanks for the hard work and cultivating this great community.
Worth noting that this, like Hellfire Gala, has a different spine on the DM. I also like the design in general, I just wish they were more consistent there. Anyways, I'm gonna grab the standard edition, even though I like the DM cover better actually. Hopefully it's an okay read.
The story's great, trust me. May not be as great as HOX/POX but still the best X-Men story after that in this era. Most importantly, it has that HOX/POX feel to, which most of the books in this Krakoan era missed.
Three videos today...?!?!? INSANITY! Those spines remind me of a box of colored pencils or some clay my grandparents might have given me in the late 80s.
I remember when Hickman teamed up with artist Esad Ribic and did Secret Wars, that felt like a Game of Thrones epic & Ribic’s art style complemented Hickman’s story so well! I really hope Hickman does one more grand final arc for this X-Men series! Would be amazing to see him team up once again with Esad Ribic too!
Thank you for clarifying that this can be read directly after HoX/PoX! That was my intention as someone who doesn’t have as much free time. This is great, and it will look nicely on the shelf.
Good looking book. I have not read any of this X-Men series. I am a classic X-Men man. Glad everyone is excited about this series. May get into it one day once I catch up.
I picked up some of the variant covers to # 1 & 2, but that was all. Jump forward a few months and the book is collected and jump forward to easter weekend and I receive my dm hardcover. Not sure when I'll get go it as I am currently reading hickman's x-men omnibus from a few weeks ago, but I always appreciate the overviews.
Still haven't read this, fell behind after X of Swords 😂😭 I want to catch up soon just haven't gotten around to it. I want to at least finish Hickman's run before I stop collecting these Krakoa era hardcovers. I just kind of got burned out a little with X-Force, Marauders, etc. Dealing more with smaller scale things like plant life, trade deals, Galas, etc. I wanted the superhero/Scifi developments to be at the front and faster. I still have zero clue about what the current X-Men books are currently dealing with. Thanks for this overview Omar, definitely looks like I have some exciting things still left to read 🔥
I know all the OHC and omnibus just came out but do you think there will someday be an expanded omnibus to include everything over two or three volumes?
I missed out on the OHC for HoX/PoX and X of Swords as I just recently got into collecting. As gorgeous as this is, I might wait for the trade to keep my collection the same. :(
Omar please do an old reader new reader of Inferno & the follow up of X Lives/Deaths of Wolverine when you get a chance. I'd ♥ to hear your guys thoughts on Hickman's ending & Percy's continuation.
Hey Near Mint. I’m confused, After reading all the “Dawn of X” there’s more I have to read of the different issues they’ve put in “Dawn of X” Like for example Cable and Wolverine. Idk if I’m explaining myself.
Would this be a good jumping off point for this current X-era? I’m trying to limit physical collecting due to space and personal reasons and would like to continue digitally from here if it makes sense. I have been getting the event HC’s and the Dawn and reign tpbs
I’ve tried oh-so-hard to enjoy this era of X-Men but I guess I enjoy the older stories more. No doubting the impressive talent though, great writers and artists virtually all the way. Thanks Omar!
Hox/Pox, Hickman's X-Men and Inferno are the only titles needed to read this era of X-Men. The rest are just filler junk with a FEW exceptions that ties into Hickman's narrative. Hellions, Sword and Way of X.
I made a video summarizing the new xmen era and I told my viewers to skip to inferno. I know thats the most concise way to read the story but hearing you say it really took a weight off my chest.
Another thin OHC which should have been collected in a premium format within the recent Omni. Instead, Marvel is milking the it because it's the X-Men franchise by pushing out ever thinner books, and spines that look like a pastels set aligned horizontally on a book shelf -- is this was we have to look forward to with the modern stuff? (I'm trying to sound negative, just objectively disapproving) If X-Men v5 gets collected into an Omni, what are the odds of INFERNO being included, and what would the mapping look like - predictions??
Can’t wait 10 years from now, when there will be interviews revealed, that everyone being salty of “hickman’s story” not being “told” will realize how dramatic they all were.
Hickman was basically vetoed out of the X office. Most of the other writers wanted to stay in the first act while Hickman wanted to move to the second act. I can't believe Marvel listened to Jordan White and his goons instead of listening to their best writer of the recent years. But of course, it's Marvel, they have to milk stuff, right? X Of Swords was promising enough. Everything Hickman did was great in that event. But Tini Howard and the editorials had to mess that up just to milk money out of it. In my opinion, Hickman not allowed to finish his X-Men run is the biggest missed opportunity in modern Marvel history. Otherwise it could've been as great as his Avengers and Fantastic Four, if not greater. At the end of the day, I still hope that Hickman will return someday to finish his story, his way. Cause none of the writers at the X office, neither Gillen nor Ewing are as good as him. So fingers crossed.
I loved HoX/PoX. I thought it was genuinely epic and impactful. It looks like Inferno is not as good given how it failed to create the same hype. I think I'll check it out if I find it for really cheap. All things said I think the Krakoa era is disappointing as it failed to keep the momentum from HoX/PoX.
This was a great sequel to HoX/PoX, and it's really sad we are never going to get the rest of the story Hickman had planned because of group editor Jordan D. White and his team of terrible writers (Howard, Ayala, Williams), who didn't want to follow Hickman's plans. Seriously how arrogant are these people to think that they are better writers than Hickman. Under these peoples leadership X-Men are going to have even bigger slump than they were before Hickman. Just compare Hickman's stuff (HoX/PoX, Inferno) to what White's group has been giving us (Excalibur, X-Corp, Trial of Magneto, X-Men Green, X of Swords). In X of Swords we were promised sword fights literally in the name of the story, but instead of fighting we got stuff like eating contest, wedding and dance battle.
This was a book where I had it pre-ordered, but by the final issue, ended up cancelling it. Story just felt like a stopgap/placebo . Could've been condensed into a single issue
The hickman xmen omni shouldve included hoxpox and this. It wouldve been his complete run minus x of swords. Just a cash grab with his name. Marvel continues to prove their incompetence. Hickman shouldve been given free reign
I can’t think of a single writer since the days of Lee that had free reign. This is just from talking to them. Even people like Morrison and Gaiman didn’t do whatever they wanted without some editorial interference. Some do get a little more special treatment than others.
@@NearMintCondition that being said, I don't think writers should be given absolute freedom to do whatever they please, but I do believe less interference from the editorial side would be beneficial. I wish we couldve seen hickmans full, true vision for the xmen. Like the story he mentioned was scrapped about canonball in the shi'ar empire, i would've loved to see that. Its seems like more and more books are being made to tick boxes instead of telling great stories. They're more scared of offending people than giving quality content imo

This is super annoying and frustrating. I'm coming in late and want to buy the omnibus but it's not even close to a complete run and the other books are long out of print.
I hope Marvel will continue releasing OHC for limited series and events. They skip War of the Realms, Absolute Carnage, King In Black, Heroes Reborn and Empyre.
This and HoX/PoX are the only books worth buying from the run. Hickman was used in name only to sell runs with lesser talent and it shows. This X-Men era is awful. Hickman should have had full creative control. RIP Hickman X-Men.
Hickman being removed from Xmen is the most disappointing move in modern COMICS history - not just Marvel. I think that the Xmen is just too big of a product to let Hickman get away with everything he was planning. Too many other books and writers+artists to cater to and try to work around. With Avengers and FF4, Hickman was in charge of everything - it was entirely his written story. Xmen just too many peas in the pod. On top of that, everything not written by Hickman in this era has been average at best. They wont be seeing another dime from me for this XM era - Inferno is the ending.
