I have been long suffering, sharing companionship with my sister; who is caught up in the anger syndrome; who cannot accept the words of prophets because they are human beings
and sinful as all men; not realizing that her anger blinds her to Gods power to change, direct aright and have mercy on all mankind - no matter who. As you said even I have been caught in this trap. I have been trying to help her see and avoid the anger syndrome and this lesson on Jonah seems the perfect answer - THANK YOU for all your explanations of how humankind twists their understanding to justify their own weakness and masks the real issue. This lesson has been MAJOR - THANKS so much

EXCELLENT!! I am astounded at your depth of understanding and insight every time I listen. Many CFM podcasts are VERY good; I listen to several but overall yours is hands down my favorite - for several reasons. I have never heard a gospel teacher explain and expound, then teach application as well as you do. Your background, articulation, and love for the Lord and His church all combine to bring an absolute FEAST each week. You have given me a love for the OT ( and B of M/D&C) that has tethered my mind and heart to God more in the last 3 years than all of my years in the church combined. How does one thank you enough. Please know that I pray for you and your family continually!! You are a blessing beyond measure! Can't wait for the NT! My only wish is that I could go back and listen to every episode many times, but I have to keep up with new content. Maybe after the NT you could just re-post all your old lessons 🙃😊

Barbara, agree one hundred percent. I am already replaying BofM lessons in between keeping up with new content. I usually get to the new content on Thursday or Friday and feast on it through to Sunday night when I finish it, leaving Monday to Wednesday for treasured repeats - up to Ether 9 now as I repeat the Book of Mormon lessons which began in Jacob. So excited to complete a full cycle of the Standard Works.

The brilliance of this lesson floored me - I have learned so much from this little book of scripture and from you, Brother Halverson - understanding now what you have studied in anti-religious rhetoric and how it applies to scripture study and nay-sayers and how they work. Jonah as a chiasmus I'd never imagined. How limited my understanding of scripture has been and how much I have learned from you astonishes me every week. And I look forward to learning so much more. Thank you so much for your brilliant work. It is so so appreciated.

Uh, I am Jonah and need to change course. This lesson was a wake up call for me. I was in the military and I am from Texas and grew up on a farm and we worked very hard for our food and morals from where I am from were on track. The city where I lived in and the judgement that I grew on that farm have affected me in my adult life. I live in a huge city and see and hear of all kinds of awful things. But I see that I am Jonah is so many ways. It is honestly the biggest thing I deal with ...that and pride and those are two horrible things to have, so being aware is the first step I guess.
I look forward to your lessons and even though I have been in church all my adult life, I have learned more about the Bible from you than anyone else. I did have a really good teacher that would teach and mention what the times and culture were like back then but I can't make this up, he ran off with a lady who visited his church and left his
wife and daughter and I think he might have taken church money or something, no kidding. He got his life together again, but gees.
I am a convert to this church and LOVE it. Everyone I have met has a real understanding of what it means to follow Christ and I love that the church does not have to recreate the wheel on every detail.

This was one of my favorite lessons! I am sorry to say that I was unaware of Jonah's pride and meanness. I don't know why, but I always thought he was afraid of the people of Nineveh, not that he was so full of hatred toward them. Thank you for your great lessons!

Boy did I ever need this. First I loved the way you started this and explained about Thomas Payne. It sure helped me see through the political theater that is so demoralizing and so large and spacious.
Second, it is very hard not to be angry as you watch Gods beautiful America being shredded by those who hate Him and showing their hate by displaying every variety of base behavior possible in every arena. Thank you for reminding me of how much I need His mercy. So many of us are praying daily to hold on to hope amid the carnage.

Amen. It saddens me how many yearn to watch the enemies of righteousness be destroyed. I yearn for those in the church of the devil to escape the organized crime, and find peace in christ. I believe that when the slaves rebel against their masters in fulfillment of D&C 87, that then Isaiah 49: 26 will be fulfilled. It will be tragic. A day of blood and horror, even for those who hate the evil they are forced to do.
I want those good trapped souls to escape now relativeky unscathed, rather than for them to be en the great and spacious building when its girders explode in blood.

This might help. I was in a temple sealing session a couple of months ago and the temple sealer spoke with us before we began. He said the we need to think about all the little changes that have happened in the temple over the past 3 or so years. He then directed us to the part about marriage between a man and a woman and the 4 added words “… according to God’s law.” He told us that these words were added so that we would understand that no matter what happens with governments throughout the world, God is reminding us what his standard is. I love this. Truth indeed. @@chapmanchaps

I look at this new announcement as “rendering unto Cesar” those things that the world says is “right”. God’s standard of marriage is eternal and cannot be changed, so I’m not worried about what the world says or does. If we get to a point where we have to shut down temples, then we are just that much closer to the Lords return. We know the end of the story and that temples and Gods work within them will be in full swing during that 1,000 year time. In the world, gay marriage is accepted. We choose our own glory by our actions, desires, works, thoughts, and heart. It’s always sad and even painful when we see the target that others want nothing to do with, but wherever any of us end up, it will be a kingdom of glory and we will be happy there. If we end up in a “lower” kingdom it is because we could not be happy in a kingdom of greater glory. Our hearts and minds would want nothing to do with the requirements and laws of that greater kingdom. So, why worry about this announcement? All we need to do is keep following the prophet, missionary work, temple work, serving the Lord to the best of our abilities, etc. All these things (temple worship, missionary work, church service) may go away before the Lord returns, but just for a little while. Or, the Lord will return before they are made to go away. Either way, never doubt Who is in control of all this. It’s not government. The Prophets know what is going on in the world. They are directed by The Lord in all ways and things. Let God prevail and look for the joy that will soon be on earth! So many glorious days ahead!!!

The story about your mission companion and his trouble starting “S” words without adding an “es” sound at the beginning made me laugh because my brother, Elder Smith, who served in Spain, always tried to get his Spanish companions to say Smith, but they could not do it. He was always called “Elder Esmith.” I teach gospel doctrine in my ward and can hardly wait to share some of these spiritually profound insights about the story of Jonah with my class members-Particularly your explanation of the gourd and the worm. I have never given that a second thought as to it having any connection to the idea of mercy and the atonement. Thank you for the immense time and effort you spend on these presentations each week. I started in October this year and finished the book of 2 nephi and found your videos of the BOM and I started to watch them as I study. Just myself every morning at 6-7:00 am. I just finished the Book Jarom 1 and the Book of Omni this morning. I love the BOM. It gives me the strength and Spirit to go through the day and feel the spirit that Heavenly Father is always with us to help us share the gospel with others.
I have a question for you. Yesterday I had a letter in the mail. I read it and it was written in pidgin language.. like broken english. It was from someone from the JEHOVAH'S WTNESSES CHURCH. It said it was coming around to the homes knocking on doors again. Which they want to talk story with the people whom they choose to knock their doors. As I read this letter I was going to write back and tell them that I am a strong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and I am just fine where I am, and I am at the True Church of God. Maybe you can Share with me, if that is the right thing for me to do. I would appreciate and Answer from you. Mahalo Piha (thank you plenty) Brother and Sister Higa love you and look forward to our next meeting in the "Come Follow Me " Scriptures Jonah.

The sign of Jonah was used by Jesus as a metaphor for His future resurrection, crucifixion and burial. Jesus used this sign to tell unbelievers about His Coming. Three days and three nights in the whale, Jonah 1:17 parallels to Jesus being the center of the earth for three days and three nights, you can refer to Matt 12:38-41. Jonah is a very significant Book to Christians; the sign of Jonah would turn out to be Jesus' greatest miracle of all. Jesus' resurrection from the dead would be God's main sign Jesus was the Messiah!! The Savior LIVES and He is the Christ!!

Cleon Skousen, in his talk about Jonah, tells of a newspaper article he had while he was writing the 1stThousand series (that he couldn't find before publishing the book). His son found the article when he was in Great Britain, on a mission I believe. It was about a man who had gone overboard on the whaling ship. The crew continued hunting the whale and 3 days later when they cut up the whale they found the man, alive, but unconscious... recuperated.... So yes it is a possibility. But I like your question of God of 'what am I running from?'

I “study” some arguments, stories and experiences of those who have left faith or the church also… though I do it as a mother, hoping I can raise my children right.
    .
I truly feel 99% of them fall due to the belief that “ if men made mistakes and God didn’t stop them, it’s not true.”
    .
God honors agency, He did it so wholeheartedly, he allowed Satan and a third of His own children to leave His glorious and holy presence. Sure, he may capture a Prophet in a big fish to show Him the severity of the situation, but ultimately leaves the choice on what to do with his teachings and warnings up to us.
    .
I’m grateful for God’s Plan… I’m grateful He has accounted for the blunders of man and sends the Holy Ghost to testify of His truths to all who seek.
    .
As for my children, they’ll ultimately have their agency… but I’m doing my best to encourage them to build their house upon the Rock. Men are sand. To a degree, all will fail them at some point, but Christ never will.

If all who read this could please pray for “L,” a loved one who is struggling to find a testimony of Christ… pray her eyes and ears will be open to recognize Him, I know it will happen. Thank you for your faith. ❤

Dear Brother Halverson, I wonder if you have heard Cleon Skousen’s talk on this subject. He tells of coming across a story about a whaling ship and a sailor who was swallowed by a whale, and lived, even after being in the whale’s belly for more than two days. And the case was medically documented. So, as much as it could be this is a story to teach a parable, it has been proven that it could actually reflect a real occurrence.

@@raphaelmordo3022 Yes! That’s it! Thank you for posting that link. Skousen talks about two things Bible critics routinely point to as being impossible and claim it proves the Bible isn’t relating historical facts. One is the great flood and the other is the account of Jonah and the whale. He actually found a newspaper article about a sailor who had been swallowed by a whale while attempting to harpoon it. The whale smashed the boot and killed the other sailors, but swallowed him. They eventually captured and killed the whale. It had been almost three days by the time they got around to cutting into the stomach and found this sailor, barely alive. but nevertheless still alive. An air pocket in the whale’s stomach had provided enough air to him alive. After a lengthy recovery he was interviewed and examined by doctors because of the bizarre nature of his case.
      Great discussion by Cleon Skousen.

The only way to understand God is know what we mean to Him and the relationship that we have with Him. He loves us as our Father and everything so much that He will forgive over and over again. He will put opportunities in our way, gifts and treasures throughout our lives. It's our job to know Him and love Him back the same. When we see Him, we will all know!!

Interesting (this is going to be long, sorry) - I read chapter 2 differently. It's all past-tense, like he's talking about another time when he had been cast into the sea, ensnared by weeds and nearly drowned, when he felt he was beyond God's sight, (spiritually or physically or both), but he prayed and promised to look again to the temple (ie be faithful), and God brought him out of corruption. In vs 8 he returns to the present, acknowledges that he forgot God's past mercy towards him (which also serves as foreshadowing), and in vs 9 he promises again to do what he promised all those years ago (which has extra meaning for those who have made promises in the temple). I also read chapter 4 differently. I liken this story to the prodigal son, with Jonah representing the "good" son. He is bitter. Here he is, he has had to be chastened in order to receive mercy, he's been through a lot, but feels these people got a "free pass". So while Jonah feels he just sacrificed a lot, God is doing the equivalent of throwing them a feast. It's unfair. So his prayer is basically saying, "they should be chastened like I was!", And when he gets upset about the gourd, thinking again, "poor me", God is saying, "here your brother who was lost has come home. Be happy for them." It is interesting how Jonah had to be constantly coerced into doing right, but the people of Ninevah wanted to do right they just didn't know how, so they brought themselves into humility.

Excellent question, and thank you for asking. After my first 2 years posting lessons, I received an email from UA-cam saying that they could and would add ads to any content they wanted to, since it's their platform. I didn't want adds to distract viewers during the middle of a lesson or at the end, when hopefully the Spirit was testifying of truth. So I realized that the only way I could have any control over when ads appeared was to monetize the channel. I could then turn off all banner ads, all ads that interrupt the videos, and all ads that appear at the end of a video. So I'm at the lowest level of monetization in order to keep UA-cam from interrupting the lessons with their desire to monetize at the maximum. I'm grateful that UA-cam makes it possible for everyone to access this content free of charge, and I pray that it will always be that way. Again, thank you for asking, so I could try to explain where my heart is.

Brother Halverson, years ago I had a friend who's husband was serving in Iraq in the military. She told me that he had said the soldiers in his group were upset by the Christians in Iraq because they has some ordinance when they got married that seemed to be like baptism. This really piqued my interest and I looked to see who these original Christians were. After much reading, I found that some literature said they were descendants of the people of Nineva, who had been converted and baptized by Timothy. The literature even said that they had sent missionaries to to China after the time of Christ. Do you know anything about this?

@Unshaken (Brother Halverson) [I'm reposting/tweaking this comment because UA-cam may have automatically blocked it] I have LOVED your channel - thank you! I was relieved in a previous video when I heard you say you decline speaking fees because it's priestcraft. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed to see from the source code that this channel is apparently monetized. Why is it okay to monetize this channel when speaking fees are inappropriate?

I'm not being charged to listen, so in effect to me, it's the same as not paying speaking fees to hear him. I'm grateful for this as I don't have the means to attend lectures or religious classes, that I'd need to pay for to attend.

I'm extremely sensitive to priestcraft because of my work with people who look for any excuse to attack the Church, though I'm amazed at the number of ads that interrupt the videos of those who are arguing against the Church, along with their fundraisers and Patreon plugs. There is definitely priestcraft out there, but like so many others I'm doing my best to avoid it, even at great personal cost. As Nephi taught, the great cures for priestcraft are humility, charity, and seeking the welfare of Zion (2 Ne. 26:29-30) and those have always been my goals, pursued as best as I can. I'm grateful for the chance to consecrate the time each week to prepare these lessons, film them, and do all the necessary video editing, which usually takes 20-30 hours a week outside my regular job and Church calling. I pray they're accepted in the spirit they're given, and that they're acceptable to the Lord, to whose glory I strive to keep my eye single. Again, thank you for asking, so I could try to explain where my heart is.

Help me understand why you think people in favor of gay marriage are focusing on sex. Maybe i misunderstood.
