According to wikia.com:
Nightcore is a style derived from the Trance/Techno-genre. It consists of songs which run way faster (not always the case) and high-pitched voices. NIghtcore sounds similar to Happy Hardcore
Nightcore has several subgenres e.g. Knightcore, which describes Nightcore with male voices, or Nightstep, which a mixture of Dubstep and Nightcore.
Also, you can distinct between Metal-Nightcore, German-Nightcore, Classical Nightcore (describes original Nightcore songs like "Moonlight Shadow" or S3RL variants), Nightcore with classical music and "normal" Nightcore, which is usually used with pop-music.
Every song can be turned into a Nightcore-song. The "Translation" from a song into it's Nightcore-version is called "nightcoring"
Usually, Nightcore songs have the following characteristics:
- (sometimes) A speed of at least 140BPM (usually more)
- high-pitched vocals
- Video with Anime- or Manga-inspired freeze frame, rarely with animation
