    So the crew understands data takes things literally because he's an android and it's not his fault, but still gets angry at him when he does exactly that. Every part of that exchange between him and crusher and the events leading up to it make that a perfectly valid response.

    This has to be one of the most infuriating scenes in Star Trek, it was funny, I was completely taken aback when nobody laughed, i was expecting a pause of silence, then laughter. Why is it okay to do it to Worf, but not Crusher? And the way Geordie reacts, honestly what I dont even.

    • @still_guns
      @still_guns 9 років тому +20

      Yeah, its like Anita Sarkeesian took over the world
      Yeah, you can laugh at the man falling down, but laugh at the woman and you're in jail for 50 years

    • @Seek1878
      @Seek1878 8 років тому +25

      Anita terrifies you so much you're going to blame her for a script written by MEN back in 1994? lol, pathetic.
      If anything, the idea that a woman can't handle being pushed overboard is a patriarchal one, which women like Sarkeesian actively fight against. What this scene is doing in a Star Trek film is beyond me.

    • @Seek1878
      @Seek1878 8 років тому +10

      I'd blame a bad script.

    • @orangejoe204
      @orangejoe204 5 років тому +8

      It's just a classically botched scene; the idea was clearly to demonstrate that Data's still "not quite human" for plot purposes, but the actual script they followed to get there produced a ridiculous and confusing non sequitur instead of a meaningful plot gesture.
      My guess? It was a huge PITA to shoot on that rented naval brig and so they rushed through. This is supported by the fact that the only other shot on the sailing ship has "Spot" randomly and gratuitously scene stealing (out of joint with the rest of the film) but they kept it anyway for lack of a better take.

    • @uknownada
      @uknownada 5 років тому +5

      As she said, it wasn't in the spirit of things. Worf fell into the water because of a mistake in the Holodeck making the plank disappear instead of just retract. Data just pushed Crusher into the water. It probably would have been funny if it was fitting to what they were doing, but as is Data just made a mistake. The scene could be funny to us, but not to the characters.
      Although Worf falling back into the water was quite amusing.

  • @Moviefan2k4
    @Moviefan2k4 6 років тому +40

    I still love the exchange right before this...
    Riker: "Computer...remove the plank!" (Worf drops)
    Picard: "Number One, that's "retract the plank", not "remove the plank"."
    Riker (nods): "Of course, sir." (to Worf) "Sorry!"

  • @Tylerpierre99
    @Tylerpierre99 5 років тому +18

    I think data nailed it. It was deadpan and unexpected and even had the unintended benefit of knocking Worf back into the water at the same time. If i was therr it'd be all i could do to stifle and muffle my laughter so as not to appear sadistic lol
    I think it was just a weak script which shoehorned the need for Data to use his emotion chip. Data has been around humans and other species to know humous. In cause and effect on thr show he uses humour to taunt Worf when dealing thr cards saying something like "four of hearts, no help for the klingon there" as he gets into the spirit of the group, much to Worfs irritation.

    The stuntwoman who falled in the water is Patricia Tallman ... more known as Lyta Alexander in Babylon 5. And she was pregnant!

    They KNOW his limitations and he didn't actually cause any harm. They shouldn't have been so hard on him. And he pretty much did what they did to Worf, which everyone thought was funny.
    I understand they needed an impetus to get him to want to put in the emotion chip, but was a bit clumsily done.

    @FMcD I believe that water on the holodeck is real. There's an early episode where Wesley and a friend walk off the holodeck soaking wet. They had been playing in the snow, I think.
    So, no, Crusher wouldn't have been to breathe underwater.

    I think also the highly sensitive Beverly was shoved and she tumbled legs upward head first into the water while Worf just fell feet down into the water from an expected prank from Riker.
    And no one shoved Worf; he just had the plank he was on removed.
    In any case, the scene was hilarious.
    I am sure later on maybe a few weeks later, Beverly quietly found humor in it.

    • @Seek1878

      Actually, the idea that a woman can't handle being pushed overboard is a

  • @SerbAtheist
    @SerbAtheist 9 років тому +9

    Ah, the good ole days of early 90s sexism against men, combining the worst of both traditionalism and upstart feminism.
    It is practically intended by the filmmakers to be taken as granted that a brute of a man/Klingon such as Worf would be fair target for all sorts of mockery and abuse, not to mention emasculation, but that a hypocritical spoiled little princess such as Dr. Crusher would be off totally limits.

    • @janed4727

    • @SerbAtheist
      @SerbAtheist 9 років тому

      Wait a second, when women exhibit misogyny it's ''internalized oppression'' (from men, of course) but when men exhibit misandry, it's ''blame it all on men.''
      I see how this works.

    • @janed4727
      @janed4727 9 років тому +4

      SerbAtheist You seem to be reading too much into my comment and looking for something to overreact to. I was saying it was poor writing and observing how ironic it was that the writers happened to be men. But since you brought it up: When women exhibit misogyny it's internalized misogyny, and when men exhibit misandry, it's (say it with me) internalized misandry. I don't know how you think this clip is representative of feminist views. Most of us would agree what Data did was pretty funny and the rest of the crew were being humorless. In fact treating women as if they were humorless princesses would be considered pretty sexist *against* women in the first place. The writers went about it in an idiotic way

    • @vrenak
      @vrenak 9 років тому +5

      SerbAtheist I think you totally misunderstand the situation, the reason it is ok to throw Worf in the water is because HE is the one getting promoted, therefore he can expect taunts, as would any other officer, male or female. When Data pushes Dr. Crusher in the others think it isn't funny because Data misunderstand why the situation is funny, Worf gets a reward and with that comes some ribbing, Dr. Crusher is not being promoted, and is thus not open for the same kind of "fun". We, the audience thinks it's fun, because Data misunderstands the situation.
