- Darryl has an amazing story....from Miles Davis, Sting and The Rolling Stones to name just a few! Find out what help "put him on the map"! Networking, social skills, preparation skills to name a few!!
The Sessions Panel shares music industry knowledge to musicians across the country! Includes Entertainment Law, Marketing, Networking, Artist Relations & Motivational skills and experiences from professionals and experts who have been "on the road" and are successful in the industry.
One of the best interviews I have seen! As it happens, I played with Darryl in Miles' band in '86. In response to what Darryl said about preparing--When I first joined the band they put me in a hotel room in NYC for 3 days with 2 cassette tapes of shows they had just done. I knew I had to be *READY* and I practiced the 1st day for 16 hours straight, then 8 hrs on each of the next two days. So when I hit the stage for the first gig I was more dialed in than I have even been on a gig. There were a couple of fast lines that were simply beyond me but everything else I felt like I was nailing.
Our generation of musicians need people like Darryl! Such immense wisdom, authenticity and kind heartedness.
Been following Darryl since his Miles period, another great album he and Omar Hakim played on in those same years (mid 80's) is John Scofield's Still Warm: he and Omar cook up one incredible groove after another.
Darryl's playing on Decoy is mind blowing.
I heard that! His playing on Still Warm with Sco is my all time favorite.
When I come back in another life I want to be Darryl Jones
I ALSO SAW SOMEONE I KNEW AND ADMIRED IN A SCHOOL TALENT SHOW. A DRUMMER. NOW I HAVE 4 DRUMKITS, A HUGE PORTABLE STUDIO, MUSIC COLLECTION OF CDS,DVDS, BOOKS, ETC
I had the chance to briefly talk to him for few minutes after an amazing show with Oz Noy and Dave Weckl here in Italy and he was like the nicest and kindest guy you could possibly imagine. He found the time to exchange few words with everyone in the room, it just floored me to see how humble and down to earth this guy was. Amazing musician and human being, so much respect.
I can listen to this man speak all day. I've never heard anyone say I'm proud of my parents. Parents can't be perfect, but most of them are doing the best they can. What a great change of perspective. Shout out to all the parents out there.
I love that Charlie said to Keith ; "so Darryl is coming on the Road with us ? .... don't you think we should tell him ?!
WOW. What a great interview. I've been following Darryl since he was part of the Blue Turtles Band. This interview was just so well done, and I came away with an even greater respect for Darryl Jones. The part where he tells us that he was lucky to have his parents. Blew me away.
Damn I love Daryll! Heard him in 86 with Kenny Kirkland, Charlie Drayton, Hiram Bullock and I still have the bootleg recording of it! Daryll was killing it!!
Another excellent interview with another gem of a man and musician. 👍🏻👏🏻
I went to school with Vince Wilburn (Miles' nephew) at the American Conservatory of Music. He and Darryl were good friends, and Darryl used to hang out there and sit on the steps in the stairwell and practice by himself. He could really do a fantastic slap chordal walk thing then and always attracted an audience. Drummers *love* great bassists.. I remember us yanking him into an ensemble practice room once with 10 percussionists and jamming. Ahh, good times.
This is a master class in humanity which happens to include great elements of musicianship. Thank you!
How can you not love & admire this great player.
WOW! No BS, this is one of the most insightful interviews I've ever seen! I've known about Darryl and some of his story for a while. This interview gives me a new level of appreciation for him as a musician and a person. Darryl is an excellent example of preparation, talent, sincerity, and humility lead to success when the opportunity presents itself. Very cool!
The story around that Miles Davis phone call cracked me up 😂👍
WHAT AN INCREDIBLE INTERVIEW!!!! 😀👍
Great advice from Darryl. I was laughing when he talked about playing a blues to audition for Miles Davis, I read an interview with Darryl about how he got the Rolling Stones gig. Darryl said he got the call and as he said in this video he was getting prepared and was shedding all the Stones big tunes so he would be ready for the audition. Darryl said he got to the audition and they said let jam and started playing Blues tunes and none of their other tunes. Then Darryl get the call a day later and he's got the gig. So know how to play the Blues right especially if a bass player.
HIS RESUME SPEAKS VOLUMES OF HIS TALENTS. I TRULY LOVE DARRYL JONES. 💜
So refreshing to listen to a mature insightful musician. And now with words. !
WOW......What a great interview.....humble.....great stuff about his parents.................loved it..........now a bigger fan than ever...WOW!
We should actually have more of these insightful commentaries of masterful musicians

DARRYL REALLY INSPIRES ME. BEING PREPARED IS VERY KEY TO GROOVING INSTEAD OF JUST " GETTING BY" 5 STARS FOR DARRYL ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Munch is the man ... what a spirit and player ... Phil Upchurch!
Thanks for this. What a lovely & grounded guy & excellent musician (obviously).
What a fantastic guy! I was lucky to see him, Mike Stern & John Scofield with Miles in London many many years ago 👍😊
Wish David Williams was still alive! Would be great to get an interview like this with him
A Darryl Jones story. Back in high school, I was at CVS with Darryl in the orchestra too. I was a saxophonist. I was at Darryls' house listening to some music and he played a Jaco Pastorius version of Donna Lee, the Charlie Parker song. I said to Darryl, "I'm gonna learn that song Munch." I swear to God, two days later, Munch said "Terrence, check this out." And he played Donna Lee, note for note, at the same tempo as Jaco did it. That's when I knew Darryl wasn't just good. He was special.
Great story Terrence....and Darryl's is a special guy, enjoyed working with him!
@John Garrett I went to high school with Darryl. We graduated together. CVS High School in Chicago.
Why was he called Munch, please?
@@monsterjazzlicks It was his nickname. Nothing more than that. That's what we called him.
Oh really? I thought it may have been related to food/appetite?
Darryl brought the stones to a new level with solid Bass, he must be considered in the band pics, like M Taylor and R wood., no journalist on this planet are dare enough to ask that question to the Glimmer Twins.
My first concert was seeing Darryl play with Miles Davis at the Lincoln Theatre in DC. It was life-changing.
The Stones were incredibly lucky to have gotten Darryl. He's raised their music to a much higher level.
L J Sopjes they were better with Wyman
😂😂he is very good....but no Wyman
@@helgeolsen8039 he's a much, much better musician than Wyman, and I'm sure Wyman will not disagree. Whether you prefer the Stones with or without him is a personal thing, but he sure tightened them up.
@@helgeolsen8039 did Wyman played with Miles?
LJ, really?? Stones is still really Pop music. I think his work with Miles and later Sting really brought to music to a higher level.
I don't think the bass player on the Stones makes much of a difference.
This series is some of the best instruction I never heard growing up. Take note.Golden
Darryl is very cool, I can see him and Kieth being great friends & of course playing together.
DARRYL'S RESUME SPEAKS FOR ITSELF 💜💜💜
For all the universes Miles visited, he still had Darryl play the blooze!
the slow, reaallly slooowww blooze - playing slow is much harder to do well
@@rca88 for sure. playing fast you can kinda fudge stuff and cover up mistakes. playing slow those notes better count.
I would love to see Anthony Jackson in a context like this.
Brilliant! I love Darryl's playing, and after watching this, love the man too. This series is great - Dom you're making it happen - but what Darryl says here - and the manner and tone with which he says it - makes this my favourite thus far. I'll watch it again and share it. Other sessions may be as good, though I can't imagine topping this one.
Darryl Jones is a great musician and a class act.
Kool as, Thanks for this what a great interview.
The Stones really scored big on getting Darryl for a bass player he's one of the best bass players out their really is the best.
This video is just... powerful...
Very interesting interview with a great bassist.
absolutely great!
Crown Him 👊🏾
So much great advice, Darryl. So glad I saw this interview. The art of listening, and socially getting along. Silence sometimes speaks louder than words and playing from the heart is key.
Glad you enjoyed this! Thanks for watching & subscribing!
Such a great and humble interview. So very talented and a beautiful soul. Deserves everything that has come his way in such a hard earned yet very blessed life.
Awesome!
That was an awesome interview with a world class talent in a bassist.
Benny Boom Boom Sudano would love this
THANK U SO MUCH FOR DOING THIS INTERVIEW AND SHARING IT!
Doesn't get any better much respect.
GOT THE BEST BASS GIG ON PLANET EARTH

That Miles Davis story is so amazing.
Great interview, what an incredible career.
My friend Darryl! Great to hear from you again!
That was great!
Don "Powerful" Famularo...
Love it!
And a great singer too... And do not forget that he played with Madonna too...
Much thanks for interviewing drummers and bass players, i don't see much of that on other channels :)
These Dom Famularo interviews are all excellent and I particularly enjoyed this one. The personal stories and insights to Darryl's climb as a musician is inspiring. Keep washing those dishes for Mom and playing from the heart.
Glad you like them!
Upchurch is the man! I didn't know that Daryl had played with him but I think it's great.
Awesome dude.
F-ing great interview. Darryl is a great musician and Respected gentleman.
Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!
darryl a great stone !!!!!
The Munch! What a totally kick ass dude, on all fronts!!!
Great interview with an incredible Bassist !
Nice Guy..
What a class act!!
This was soooo good!
Great interview , great film !
Wow! That was one of the most inspiring interviews I have ever seen! Darryl made me feel like things that may seem unacchievable are actually within reach if you just go about things the right way. This guy is sharing so much priceless knowledge on his own approach to music and I am just baffled by how humble he is after everything he has accomplished in his career. Great musician, great guy and I bet he's an excellent teacher too with his spot-on analyses and philosophical mind. I wish this interview had been at least an hour and a half and if I could I would click like a hundred times on this video. Thank you so much for this interview! It made my day!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it & hope you subscribe/share our channel with others while we bring many more great interviews!
Such a great talk! Thank you very much!
great guys thx
Solid pieces of advice.
Great interview ... thanks for this .... I wonder if it was him that came up with the bass line to the Miles hit..... Star People / New Blues ?
Darryl played Star People / New Blues with the Randy Brecker Hip Bop Allstars tour 10 years ago which I watched live .Steve Lukather and Robben Ford turned that tune inside out..... on that tour with Daryl swinging !!!
fantastic
Great guys. Great interview!
Superb, Dom. Thank you.

The Fifth Stone!
Very good interview. Good job Dom and Darryl getting those tips to the forefront. Abraham from 60620
The Sting documentary is where I first saw him and I thouhght, I like this guys energy and the way he plays. Im pleased he go the Stones gig as Im sure it pays well...even after 22 years! However, I think in some ways it's also denied me hearing him play with other artists. I love just how down to earth and humble he is.
RtripleA hi there can you tell me the name of this documentary?
@@czarpaul01 It's called "Bring on It The Night" definitely worth a watch
RtripleA thanks man
@@czarpaul01 You're welcome. Hopefully you'll enjoy it as much as I did.
Up Church..That was deep when Dom said that..Also Walking to New York Darryl hahah!
I met Darryl at the bottom line in the late 80s at a Lou Marini show, at the time I was a NYC Park Avenue Chiropractor, I told him I played guitar seriously since I was 5yrs old and dying to play professionally, He said I should go for it, totally supportive, I said "i'making $600k /yr, world renowned, I'm not giving THAT up to be a nobody guitarist for $50 a night" he said you can do it if you really want to. Long story short, 2ys later, I sold the practice, played with Buddy Guy 50 times , Albert King, Albert Collins, BB King, SRV, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Greg Allman, many others. Darryl doesn't know how his encouragement made a difference in my life. I hope to tell him someday. He deserves his good Karma.
That's a great story & inspirational! Appreciate you sharing & subscribing to our channel so you don't miss the latest interviews as they are released!
@Toortog Pown - Ron Wood said that first thing, for every bass player the Stones auditioned, he asked: "Do you want a Guiness"? Darryl answered something like, "Sure, I'll have a Guiness." Ronnie wanted to know what it was going to be like hanging out with them. (Darryl says how important that is in this interview, too.) Darryl started off right.
The Munch!
Great interview. John Schofield was said to have the equipment to blow Miles away. He never played with a beat as strong as Al Foster. Wynton and Bradford were new stars but hardly at their peak. in 1983 Sco was being anointed but I would say late 80s he really came into his own. Christian McBride said some new jazz stars got lucrative contracts prematurely in the 90s because of the Marsalis factor. Lester Bowie hailed Wynton as a genius at 19. he learned in a week what in Lester's words took him a month. When Wynton turned 30 Lester said Wynton wasn't the man. the conservatory kids ain't from the streets. Daryll is from the streets. Marcus Miller is. from the streets. great history
You cannot say every thought that comes in to your head. And neither play it. The mistic behind a real special bass players.
DJ seems like a really nice guy. Great interview also, as always from Dom !
We agree! Thanks for listening!!
Daryl Jones, one of my favorites. Loved him with Miles too. The “You’re Under Arrest” cd by Miles comes to mind, with such a unique electric bass tone at the time. Great to hear Daryl speak. What an articulate speaker. Love to hear him play more with drummer Omar Hakim with Sting or Steve Jordan and other fusion drummers. Any suggestions of great albums with Daryl on fusion albums?
If Daryl’s playing was a dessert, it would be homemade butterscotch pudding. Homemade pudding, not factory made. 🍨
Yes! For sure, if you don't have it, be sure to check out John Scofield's "Still Warm" album, which is one of my all time favorite fusion records, and features Darryl, Omar Hakim, and the late Don Grolnick on keys. Fantastic tunes, and just stellar playing by all four musicians. "Still Warm" is still my favorite of Scofield's fusion oriented albums, and DJ plays great on everything there. They all do! A must have.
