Yeah the music fits the atmosphere and gameplay perfectly in this game. I can picture the stages in my head just listening to the music. One of the best soundtracks of the SNES IMO; the SNES has many.
No Castlevania can beat this one, best controls, best graphic style, best atmosphere, best music , best replayability, I just wish it would be as challenging as the beta version.
My favourite Castlevania game! The only differences between the Japanese and NTSC/ PAL versions are the crucefixes, the sound of the whip, blood and the color of the fluid in the torture chamber's floor, the gameplay, levels and enemy placement are the same!
Number 1: Symphony of the Night. Number 2: tie between Rondo of Blood and this game. Rondo has a more upbeat atmosphere and has voiced cutscenes, while this one has better gameplay and has this dark vibe that is still creepy to this day.
Probably still my favorite in the series. The music, sprite work and 8 way whipping are just all top notch. I think the Metroidvania games are top notch, but I probably replay this once a year because it can be finished in a casual afternoon.
10:10 That medusa boss is litterally just there to ruin the music. then when you kill her, Simon just struts on with the music resetting. love that so much
You can't adjust the difficulty but afrer you beat Dracula and you saw the credids the game will start again - but much harder. With stronger, faster and more enemies. Now, the time counter plays a role too. I never knew about that, regognized it just yesterday after a playtrough...
Thanks for showing this patch. Looks interesting. I feel it's a bit hit and miss. I like they brought back the things that got cencored from the Japanese edition. Like the crosses, nudity and blood. I don't like they reversed the other changes as well. I much prefer the font and whip sounds in the international release. They changed that for a reason, and it had nothing to do with censorship. If I load the international release into an emulator and the Japanese version right after, the chain whip actually sounds the way it does in the international version, so I believe that's how it always was supposed to sound. The way it sounds in the Japanese version is likely just a bug. In any case it gets annoying pretty quickly. Also, I'm not a huge fan of the blood in the title screen. The colour is too bright, and the sound of the droplets is unrealistic. It's overly campy, while the rest of the game is more serious. The title of the international release also looks better than the Japanese version and it looks better without the blood on it. The blood on the Japanese title follows the curves of the letters. They just copied that blood onto the international title, but the way it curves makes no sense now from a physical point of view.
Actually just noticed the curves and indeed, the patcher just took the JP title and slapped it at the bottom of the US title, also just noticed the whip sounds too. Though I still find the custom intro a bit neat, the patcher probably wanted to recreate the JP intro as best as they can, I like both title screens really.
Fantastic game indeed. You know, it's funny, but I think the "censored" bit in Stage 8 makes more sense. When I was a teenager playing this game first, I interpreted the green goop as acid, something obviously not to get hit by or land in. Originally, it's essentially cursed blood. I mean, sure; you don't want to land in it or get touched by it, but is it acid blood? :P
50/50 it's acidic blood but I get your point really, only similarity the green stuff and blood have is Simon can drown in it! As for the stuff that leaks in the ceiling, I think the acid would make more sense.
