Never mind flies. Use a Len Thompson five of diamonds 3/4 oz spoon lure with a treble hook. For big fish use one ounce. Mepps #5 red and white are also excellent...having treble hook. Both are brass. Rooster tail feathers can be tied to hook that the lure appear bigger. Adding reflective yellow marking tape on the lure means killer success. These are the top two lures for pike
As a kid I went fishing with my neighbor and his dad. I caught a sunfish, and right when it got to the boat a huge northern attacked it and bit it on the side. Was kinda crasy.
My dad was once ice fishing for lake trout in 100 feet of water. The bait? A dead cisco, probably 14 inches long or so. We got a bite on the tip up and when we got there, we knew right away it wasn't a trout because trout more often than not take *all* the line out on the spool of the tip up. So we pull in the fish and what is it? A 20 inch northern pike. The thing couldn't even fit the cisco in its mouth, it had it sideways like a dog holds a bone and it was just swimming with it. They are voracious predators much like their cousin the muskellunge. If they can get it in their mouth, no matter the size, they'll do their damndest to try and eat it. It's fascinating.
I’ve been finding the same thing using my Dads rubber “rat” lure. It’s actually a rubber mouse but I like calling it a rat. And jeepers, I had a little 8 inch pike who also, could barely get the lure in his mouth. They really love mice... and twirling spoons. I got one that’s a rubber minnow with a twirling spoon in one and they couldn’t get enough of it for a good 10 minuets... then river goes all quiet and that was it for fishing for me. It’s like these river pike just quit after a set number of casts. 🎣
Not really relevant in this instance (fly fishing) but pike also work on scent as they scavenge as well, in the UK, pike anglers use oily sea fish as dead baits, and often inject them with fish oil, they sometimes ground bait areas with small pieces of fish although I think that is not allowed in the US. Lure anglers sometimes soak soft plastic lures in oils etc.- . Most lures/flies will work if you find the pike- they are often not where they should be and are where they should not be lol. Noise is a good one, quite a few lure designs have rattle chambers and they do seem to work. There are small rattle chambers available for lures which could possibly be incorporated into pike flies.
Red Devils and five of diamonds are the best spoons that work for me. And for spinners I use 5# mepps red and white. And I always use plastic fish imitation
If you're gonna try it, don't take a big one they're the mamas! plus the smaller you take the better they taste the bigger they get they taste more and more gamey

Geez for me all you need is to throw in a colourful lure by some structures and you got a pike but this video did help me

You're right about pike not being where they should be. Always in places opposite of where people say they are
Great video! Thanks
Glad you liked it!

@@dovydassim8188 I've seen two large pike come off the water on a bobber and worm a 45" and a 38".
I feel very concerned
Glad no bystanders we're hurt !! And it sucks that happened to her, hopefully they catch the dirtbags!!
Thanks to evolution?
Yes.

Big Bob thin air? Non living matter cannot produce living matter that’s a scientific fact
evolution, lol...
Let’s catch these pike in Maine lakes they a an awful invasive species there
What sorts of native fish do they eat? Trout? I’m from Minnesota where they are native.
@@PelicanGreed Baby salmon and salmon eggs. Salmons make up more than 95% of the orca's diet. Or more specifically orcas in Washington state.
PelicanGreed Me too, i’m in golden valley and i fish on Sweeney Lake. I’ve been trying to catch a pike, no luck. Any tips?
Fly-in to remote outpost camps is what these rich guys do...........$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ !
Whats the point, they are full of worms and taste like crap
Carp also tastes like crap, and smells like it, and spells like it. Just saying. R.
Not here. Pike are the best tasting fish.
