So, the Ptolemies were not particulary modest... but they had really well adapted their iconography to the concept of power in Egypt ! Very interesting video, as always !
Such exceptionally huge coins are of course beyond the normal means of a collector, but smaller coins from Classical Greece (hektes from Mytilene or Phokaia, the ones from Kyzikos are more looked after) are available from 500 euros in a decent state, 1000/2000 euros in EF state for the most common ones. And like ClassicalNumismatics told you, Celtic, late Roman and Byzantine solidi and fractional (tremissis) are also available in amazing state for 1000 euros. Or even tiny archaic gold fractions (very moving as they belong to the very fist coins) start at 200 € (but with no specific design on them, so not beautiful per se)
Very interesting, can you make a video on pre ptolomeic coins from egypt or maybe some viking coinage. It would also be interesting to get a complete historical breakdown of how coinage spread throughout the world.
Honorable Mention for Pharaoh Nectabebo II who minted the first Gold Native Egyptian Coins yet found to pay Greek mercenaries in the his service. The last native dynasties of Egypt between the 2 Persian Occupations also minted Athenian Owl imitations as well.
Great series of coins, I still wish the description had a valuation of the coins or the auction they might be in. Either way I found the content great. Thanks
The Egyptian made some very very large and heavy gold coins as well, much larger than any of these. Ptolemy the 3rd are my favorite, but I own some of Ptolemy the first.
If my cat was a boy i wouldve named him leo. She was a stray that we adopted and turned out to be a girl (Bella). Cats were pretty important in egyptian culture / religion so thats another vague connection. Are there any Egyptian coins depicting cats ?
What an arbitrage possibility! I wonder why they were worried about silver leaving Egypt? I’d fill my Roman ship full of silver coins and sail to Egypt and exchange the cargo for 5:1 gold. My arrival back in Rome would’ve been such a bacchanalia!
The 5:1, 2:1 and 1:1 gold to silver ratios come from the period of the native pharaohs, prior to the introduction of coinage to Egypt. When the Ptolemies came in, they fixed a 10:1 ratio. It was still better than the rest of the Hellenistic world, where the rate was around 12, 13 to 1
Great insight on the topic, as usual. In a way, the Ptolemeys were in a similar situation to the Byzantine empire. A lot of gold and bronze and very little silver in between
Thanks for your great channel and videos Classical Numesmatics, you provided me with much needed distraction during breaks while writing my thesis. A remark: in the beginning of the video such as around 1:20 I would say the balance of music and voice felt a bit off with the music being to strong. Finally I wonder if you or anyone from the community has advice on where to find good replicant coins. I would like to have some to use during teaching or for my own personal historic interest. Sadly buying originals would be out of my budget so historically accurate replicants in worthless materials would be great aswell. Ofcourse I do not mean true fakes with an intent to decieve, a small mark to indicate their nature as replicants would be great to have included.

Man I hope to be able to afford some ancient gold coins some day
If any gold coin does it for you, start by looking at celtic or byzantine fractional gold, these are generally the most affordable.
whit 200/300€/$ you should find something.

To clarify for any reader, even coloured plastic versions with historically accurate shapes would suffice.

Ptolomeus I seems to have a ramshorn around his ear ...
Missing Egypt's most legendary coins... From Ptolemy I, the elephant quadriga stater and the elephant headdress stater, and the Nektanebo stater.
