Favorite thing you said: Replicate one through four in the five through eight spots. We hit in groups of four, is what I tell my youth baseball players. This eliminates the dreaded “I am batting last” mentality. This part is really important for youth baseball players.
In a league where all kids bat through the lineup, you need to spread your best hitters out. The reason is, you need to be a threat to score every inning and you don't want to line your worst hitters up. what are you going to do in the last inning down by 1-2 runs with your 4 worst hitters due up?
Best overall hitter is #3. #4 is power, lower ave, slower runner typically. Of course, you have to hit the players you have. You don't always have everything.
Regarding youth baseball teams: if you have three hitters in an 11 player continuous lineup that historically hit for low average and relatively low obp, but two of the three are very fast, would you hit them 9-10-11 to keep the Plate Apprarances low, or spread 1-2 of the fast ones out a bit to not have such a dead spot?
Hi coach, I’ve been throwing long toss, and doing pull downs for a while now. I was wondering how many times a week should I do them. Right now, I’ve been doing those two, 4 days a week, but I’m worried if that is too much per week.
Maybe in the 80s and prior the best hitter was in the 4th slot but in the more modern era the best hitter batted 3rd. Now in the present with analytics, at all levels the data shows you wanna bat your best hitter 2nd.
Pay attention during practices to see who are the better hitters. Really in kids baseball you should bat your best hitters straight down from the top 1-9 (or however deep your lineup goes). Then completely flip flop your lineup every couple games, have the bottom kids lead off.
Hey coach. What do you think about spreading out the bottom of the lineup in youth baseball through out the lineup especially if they dont have a good batting average
I like to feather the weaker hitters and mediocre hitters in the back of the order. Set your top 4 then rotate. Also if you need to bat everyone and have a lot of players you can lead off with the bottom 2 kids every once in awhile to keep them involved.
I couch a little league team and I tried to heed your advice about the clean up spot. I asked the the kids to show me their package to see if it was complete and I got arrested. :/ this is the second time it has happened. I tried to judge my pitchers by their junk and I got arrested. Am i maybe not understanding things properly
Okay, this coach means well but if he's coaching anything but experienced ballplayers I wouldn't follow his advice at all. It's not rocket science how to create a lethal lineup when you have the players on your team. I disagree with putting power hitters only at 3-5 like the MLB does, this is just regular follow what's already being done. When I was a youth baseball coach, I had between 3-5 kids with extra base power, 3-7 kids with good contact, still developing power and 4-8 kids with bad eyesight, fear of the baseball, might be dealing with psychological abuse at home, whatever the reason, in their head, they don't believe they can hit, they might be dreaming of being a hitter, maybe they like computers and video games more whatever the reason is, they won't hit .200 even if the ball is coming right at the sweet spot in little league. How I made sure that kids were seeing the ball and getting enough at bats to grow was to hide the bad hitters everywhere in the lineup. For me, it didn't matter who was leading off, if the kid made good contact or got on base, he could lead off. Whoever batted 2nd was usually a bad hitter who rarely made contact. I was developing these kids, I wasn't out there to win every game. I believed that if we had good hitters between bad ones, an out or a walk between a single, walk or extra base hit, I was able to balance the outs over longer periods of time, inning by inning. Very rarely did my team go down 1-2-3 because of it. My in the hole hitter was usually a player with power and contact, but between my 4-9 I still balanced out good hitters, good power hitters and poor hitters all through the lineup. No matter what I tried to do with the kids, it was about development not winning. Winning is when you're in high school and above. Even in High School, I was mishandled as a player. I had big power as a right hander, I could knock the ball 450 feet with consistent practice. The problem was that my manager was the father of two of our ballplayers. One was a lefty swinging outfielder, decent athlete, fast, maybe hit .245-.260 His younger son was an 8th grader, hit .150ish maybe .165 in the 7th hole. If I played, I was always. ALWAYS hitting 9th, I got on base, I could sacrifice bunt, but when I had at-bats, I picked up the lumber and roped balls to the gaps, I was a wallbanger! I hit .325 off the bench with an on base of .496 and OPS of .985! Did I not deserve to be an everyday player? Yes I did. Don't abuse your players by pigeonholing them to one spot in the lineup. For whatever reason. More at-bats should show you who the kids are. And putting then at the bottom of the lineup does you and them NO FAVORS. Let them all share the burden of being the last guy in the lineup. They'll have more fun and worry less on who's getting special treatment

Tbh, I'm using this to plan my backyard baseball lineup

I love what you are doing Coach Madden, and keep it up!! I have learned a ton of things from your videos, thank you.

3 is the best because he’s more consistent then 4. 3 can hit the ball far like every AB and 4 it’s either a strikeout or a homer.
Great video. To the point. Cheers from Aus 👍

9, 10, 11
David Barfield if u have 5 players that consistently strike out then u need a new team

Pay attention to your arm. Gage how much you’re doing by how your arm feels.
Maybe in the 80s and prior the best hitter was in the 4th slot but in the more modern era the best hitter batted 3rd. Now in the present with analytics, at all levels the data shows you wanna bat your best hitter 2nd.
Hey coach, when I pitch I don’t follow through or my teammates that are catchers say I follow through too much. Any tips?
Not sure I’d have to see you pitch
Thank you! very helpful
second one!!
That was very simple and very helpful.
How do you determine OBP before the season starts? Especially if you coach youth baseball where teams change every season
In the beginning of the year it’s a guess but as the season goes on you’ll have more numbers to look at.
Pay attention during practices to see who are the better hitters. Really in kids baseball you should bat your best hitters straight down from the top 1-9 (or however deep your lineup goes).
Then completely flip flop your lineup every couple games, have the bottom kids lead off.
See how they do in practice do scrimmages team vs team or sandlot so see if the player likes to take pitches or steal bases
@Jimothan21 this is great! Thanks

Hey, first scrimmage today, wish me luck!
Good luck! 🍀
So my daughter is first on her little league team and she's last on her travel team. So what does that mean?

Is this a joke or? They mean by there skills of hitting, like good average and power to drive in more runs. Not their junk.
@@jnl7196 its obviously a joke lol. C'mon bruh
it’s a funny joke but I couldn’t tell if it was for real.
hello!!!!!!!!!

I am the 4th hitter on my team 😎 I can hit FAR!!!
But I wanna hit the fence not just to the edge of the grass do you have any tips on how to do that
Best hitter hits third, when I was in little league I was the best hitter on the team and I hit 3 not 4
