Marzieh Hamidi, Afghanistan: Defying the Taliban Through Taekwondo

Pushing forward with your dream with all the odds stacked against you is a HARD thing to do, but that's exactly what Marsieh Hamidi is doing as we speak. As an Afghan female athlete, all her rights were taken away from her when the Taliban came to her country. She shared with us:
“I received a message from my coach and he told me that the Taliban told the girls to never come to the gym again and never think about it to go to the gym ever again because if they see you around the gym we are going to do what we want to the girls. I understand that I am losing my identity as a woman in my country and I cannot be visible. Women are invisible now in Afghanistan. Many things are happening to women in my country it's not just they are banned from schools. There is a gender apartheid in Afghanistan. You know I didn't want to be a victim because if I wanted ot fight there against them they could kill me. So I didn't want to die for nothing.”
She was given two options,
1: Stay in her country and possibly die for her dream
2: Travel somewhere safe and to train to become a role model and beacon of hope for women in Afghanistan
