Said the man who created some of the most intricate and complicated drawings and designs ever.
Super video
I am not asking myself : does that bring me joy? but instead I ask myself : if my house burns down, would I buy that thing again?
AIWATE Thank you! This is also very helpful.
This makes it a lot easier, thanks!
This is cleva!
I'm writing that down!
Thanks, man!
Sometimes you have to remove toxic people from your life too!
Moses Emmet Exactly... but that is easy!
@@zbynekcodykolacek How is that easy?
@@domobran23r always speak truth, soon they'll vanish
@@Reelbuzz247 Haven't tryed that before, but dam i think ill sound like asshole, but then.. They deserve it.
@@Reelbuzz247 : Yes, 'honesty is a relative virtue' !
But when we really delve into the reasons for why we can't let something go, there are only two: an attachment to the past or a fear for the future
We keep a thing to trigger the memory. Take a picture of the thing. Create a photo album of picture memories and let the 'thing' go. :-)
May570 very good idea... but at the same time, trying to let go of the past or trying to overcome your fear can make you stronger in the end
Attachment to the future as well :)
We need minimalism and simplicity in digital/virtual world, too. Material design is an example.
Thank you so much for ensuring your captions are correct for any HOH/ deaf viewers or just those that prefer to use captions!
“If you want a golden rule that will fit everybody, this is it: Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” (William Morris, 1880)
Morris’ Arts &Crafts movement was a reaction to the fussy clutter that had begun to dominate Victorian home interiors. Our contemporary clutter looks different, but the remedy’s the same.
This is so good! Thank you thank you. This evening I felt like crying, because I keep moving things around and have reached a place where I'm in limbo.
This video has given me light. I've made a list and will work on it. Thank you again.
Decluttering your life makes you more stress free
Simple, but powerful advice and something one can start doing immediately.
However, one cannot think too black and white here. Even if you don't love anything specifically, it can still be necessary to keep, like your toothbrush.
Great point. There is a lot of stuff that I don't love that are just necessary. For example, I don't like a lot of my furniture anymore, but I am not in a position financially to replace them and I need places to sit/sleep/work. Most of the time you won't be able to pawn off your undesirable work tasks onto others because they don't like those tasks either.
This is wonderful in theory but more challenging to implement fully in reality.
Love your quotes!
"When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change!"
It’s all about perspective! And you are right. Simplicity is the way to go. We begin to soar when things don’t weigh us down.
Getting a colonoscopy does not spark joy. But it could save my life. Having a root canal absolutely does not spark joy, but if I need one, I had better get it or I'll be miserable and incapacitated. Paying taxes does not spark joy, but if I don;t want to go to jail, I must "render unto Ceasar what is Ceasar's." The idea that we should discard everything from our lives that does not spark joy is absurd, even childish in some ways. Marie Kondo has a few good ideas, but this one has pulled the wool over a lot of folks' eyes.
God I wish that chick never would have used the word “joy.”
It’s ridiculous and basically meaningless if you think about it. Even minimalists have utilitarian things that wouldn’t make it on the “joy” list.
*Choosing the minimalist lifestyle was one of the best decisions that I made in 2018.*
*That made me over 5000 dollars (from decluttering) and freed up space in my house that I now can use to make the quality of life even better.*
*The money is invested in safe and secure stocks that should be growing over the next few years and when they reach my goal amount I am planning on using that money to buy myself some extra time in which I don't HAVE to work and can enjoy life the way I want.*
I had finally reached part of this conclusion, but this verbalized what I have intuitively been feeling and leaning towards. Thank you!!
U have one of the best channels on youtube thank u indeed
I know of a parent that could benefit greatly from this advice. Unfortunately, they don't think hording is a problem.
Thank you! Your ability to simply complex ideas in to digestible information is unmatched!
This is the real problem with people these days. Modern day media and quests for extravagant lifestyles have made life very complicated. Minimalism is probably the solution.
I just randomly selected one of your videos to comment this: I watch one of your videos everyday since I found your channel. It inspires, makes you feel powerful, it helps you learn about yourself and the things you’re doing wrong, and the advices are endless. Thank you for sharing!!!
I forgot to add the microwave to the list. I guess I don't need it. 😭
I've never found this works for me, I come at it the opposite direction. I find it easier to remove the worst thing than determine the best thing. This may be more gradual, but over time I get to a similar place.
dont know how i found this channel but I thank God I did. Great vid man
Your video is simple, yet very effective.
Great message. I totally agree. Simple is best and the minimalism lifestyle works great for me :)
Ill give it a bash. Thank you!
Minimalism, the ultimate way, how to safe the planet... I work on it, my goal is to be able, to pack my life in Toyota 4 runner. (Maybe small U-Haul behind it).
I don't love my vacuum cleaner, but I need it!
I like the lil music at the end 😂 great advice! I think I’m realizing that visuals help me understand myself and other things much more than a bunch of organized words. Plus the English language is already confusing as it is. I really appreciate your content.
Another great you tube video. Definitely will try it. Thank you sir.
I love lamp
Once you develop strong boundaries, then it's very easy to declutter.

Great content as always mate!
Great work! Thanks for the video :)
awesome video..learning a lot from you
Very useful video. Also I thought not having music with the chapter titles works much better.

Simplicity is the best way to live.
I personally hated that book, its so repetitive and over-hyped, there are way better books out there on minimalism and simple living. Also, just because you don't love something it doesn't mean that you won't need it. My fork or spoon may not directly bring joy to my life but they are certainly useful when needed.
danny d
Exactly. And I’m not going to list every useful thing I own, whether it brings me joy or not.
@bubblez Don't they though? My fork, spoon, knife and plate bring me immense joy through nourishment.
... then apparently weren't paying complete attention and missed certain points...😒
Suppose I didn't put something like my bed on the list, do I get rid of it?
Great
2:50 - "Everything that you didn't write down on any of those lists doesn't bring you joy.... They do not bring you happiness. If they did they would be on your list.... And these are the things that you should remove from your life." I'm sorry, but _that's ridiculous._ This video suggests that I can sit for ten, thirty or however-many minutes and think of every thing, task, place, co-worker and leisure activity that brings me joy. That seems to assume I have a perfect computer-like memory of everything in my house and a very limited set of interests OR that every other thing that brings me joy is going to come to me in the time it takes to do that exercise. COME ON. You specifically say "don't go around looking for things to love, just write down what comes to mind." If I haven't had a good night's sleep or I'm distracted or feeling depressed or irritated or anxious or under the weather there's a good chance I'm going to miss even some important items for the list!
On top of that, life can't be neatly reduced to just three areas: things, work, and leisure. What about relationships? What about health? What about dreams & goals? I readily admit that I tend to overthink things and to collect things -- hence my attraction to this video -- but the proposed solution seems oversimplified and even reckless. I'm not going to remove everything from my life that didn't pop into my head during that one thought session!
Having said that, I agree with the basic premise of reducing in many ways so that I can focus on what I love, and I've had that attitude for several years.
MikeAnn193 and that’s why your life sucks.
MikeAnn193 and this is why you do more than one thought session.

Do what you love. He's a monster when it comes to doing what he's good at (i.e. programming and engineering), he spends every minute awake thinking about his work - coupled with a naive vision/mission of saving humanity - he's doing great things. Read his biography written by Ashlee Vance. You'll be surprised what a hard-working and kind man he is.
