Weird Lens Reviews: Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 with samples (Full-frame and APS-C)

  • I don't normally review legacy lenses and I'm largely going to be sticking to that rule. But I've had a tonne of requests to take a look at this particular Helios lens (and there are many different variations of it out there). This one is particularly interesting as it gives you a bit of a 'swirly-bokeh' effect. I actually held on to this lens as it turned out to be a lot of fun to use...!
    I hope you all find my new test chart helpful.

    In case anyone is wondering, my Canon 70D had to be sold as I was saving up for my wedding/ honeymoon...which all went great! So I've been using my old Canon 60D quite a lot recently. In the case of this review though, I borrowed my mother-in-law's 70D for some test shots.

    The swirly bokeh effect can easily be achieved on crop sensors. No need at all for a full-frame camera. It's just a matter of distance and knowing what backgrounds and light conditions work best. That being said, this was a nice review and it's a real pity you won't be doing more. Vintage MF lenses are like a parallel universe with its own rules and time.

    • @gnarlyvision852
      @gnarlyvision852 8 років тому

      +Mica GBM Do all MF lenses have that swirly bokeh?

    • @AnPrionsaBeag
      @AnPrionsaBeag 8 років тому +29

      +Gnarly Vision No, only some of them such as the Helios 40-2 85/1.5, the CZJ Biotar 75/1.5 or the Leica Summitar 50/2. Other vintage lenses have star-shaped bokeh at certain apertures like the Macro Takumar 50/4 or the MC Volna-9 50/2.8. The Zenitar-ME1 50/1.7 even has square bokeh. Then you have the so-called bokeh monsters with so many blades bokeh bubbles are perfectly round (Pentacon 135/2.8 or Tair-11A 135/2.8). Hope it helps.

    • @gibor4975
      @gibor4975 8 років тому +10

      you can't achieve that swirly bokeh like of full frame on crop sensor cameras. it crops the center area of the optics & missed the rest of the image area.

      @AnPrionsaBeag 8 років тому +31

      Does it now? Try harder. There's millions of photos across the web from people who managed to succeed. Just because you can't doesn't mean it can't be achieved.

      it swirls. but not enough like what you see in a fullframe, dinstance from subject won't help you. some people modify the front element but the swirling effect looks kinda weird

    I adore most of the older Russian lenses and have quite a few of their amazing East German and Ukraine made camera's as well. The Helios 44-2 lenses I've shot does exactly as you say, but perform so well that I never regret using them on my later Japanese camera bodies since I have neutral density filters to accommodate special effects. They are solid performers, and can't really see not using them even if other lenses are at hand. Great content, and a solid review.

    I agree with all you've said here. I had couple of 44-2s and surprisingly, all of them behaved differently (optically speaking). I've read somewhere that is because of poor control quality in Soviet days.
    Anyways, what you should've mention is the other version of this lens are known to hit mirror of FF Canon's, just a heads up to people who would be willing to buy this. When focusing to infinity or near it, some versions will protrude significantly more into body of camera then other, causing it to hit the mirror, and possibly damage it.
    I am talking about 44M-2, 44M-3, 44M-4, 44M-5, 44M-6 and 44M-7.
    I was so said when I realized I had to sell my MC 44M-3, when I made my switch to 6D, because it was much sharper and contrasty than 44-2s I owned.
    For any people interested in Soviet era lenses, I'd pay attention to Helios 77M-4 (50mm f/1.8) , Helios 40-2 (85mm f/1.5) and Jupiter 9 (85mm f/2). Whit exception of Jupiter, both of them have swirly bokeh, but they are much more expensive.

    I own one. Got it for $60 on Ebay and thankfully the seller lived in the US since they are mainly produced in Russia.
    It's attached to my Fuji XT-1 and it is an amazing portrait lens. Never really bothered on achieving the swirly bokeh look since I prefer shooting someone closely with just enough background for a little depth. Aside from all that I definitely recommend this lens and you save a pretty penny and you will not be disappointed.

    I had a Zenith B with this lens for many years. I used the stepless aperture ring as they suggested in the manual - open it up to focus, shut it down to shoot. (Set your preferred aperture on the clicking aperture ring first). I used to meter with a Leningrad 4 exposure meter. Now I have a full-frame Canon DSLR with M42 adapter, I can meter using the camera's own system (all manual settings of course).

    Just got a nice copy of this. I'm not concerned about the corners or vignetting, you don't buy an old lens like this for pixel peeping. You're buying it for that buttery smooth bokeh, making corner softness insignificant. These old lenses have a charm that modern lenses just cannot deliver [without a lot of processing] - also, most users of this lens love that flaring ;) I paid €50 for mine, and €10 for an M42 to Fuji X adapter. I doubt you'd find one for £10 anywhere unless it's falling apart.

      Christopher Frost Photography Yeah, it's a bit of a catch 22. Reviews like yours are great for drawing our attention to these wonderful cheap lenses, but that in turn boosts sales of these gems, and pushes the prices up. I own a similar lens (Helios 44M-4)
    didn't pay anything for it, found it in my grandma's locker :)
    I absolutely love this lens, the only disappointment is that it has some significant play in the focus ring. Makes focusing really annoying sometimes.
    I wonder if it is my particular lens problem or they're all like that.
    Also, the "swirly bokeh" effect is there on the APS-C cameras as well. It just depends on a background really.
    Thanks for your reviews, they are really helpful and fun to watch ;)

    Amazing coincidence! I won a Zenit E plus a Helios 44-2 a few days prior to the upload of this video. The softer aperture ring, as the manual says, helps you to compose the pic also by shallowing depth of focus so you can be sure you have your object the sharpest possible when working on wider apertures.

  • @drznzvl

    Regarding sharpness between center and corners you clearly pointed out, it should be difference in focus. There is a different distance between lens to your test poster center and to poster corners. When you where changing aperture, actually you changed deep of fields that is why you get sharper corners. It means that lens behave as per design. Do you agree?

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  8 років тому +3

      The issue you're referring to is called 'field curvature'. Lenses should be designed to cope with that. If not, then their corners will be soft. I'm not here to give the reasons why a lens might or might not have soft corners - just to show you how soft they might be.

      The kit lens is not at all bad. The Kit lens of a6300 is actually a remarkable wide angle lens. Consider this, its a 16mm f3.5 on an APS-C body, which has a sensor slightly larger than Canon or Nikon APS-Cs. Nikon and Canon usually provide a 18mm f3.5 base kit lens. Imagine the landscape photography on that lens. f3.5 is a good aperture speed for landscape. You don't need anything lower unless you're going low light for landscape. Overall its an amazing lens and not worth any criticism, considering it comes free of cost. You just need to know to make the best of the lenses. I use A6000 with the Kit lens as my Wide angle lens, Sigma 30mm f1.4 as my portrait lens and the Sony 18-105mm f4 as telephoto. If you're into portrait photography, Helios 44m is a great and cheap option. Its an excellent lens. But considering your budget, your Kit lens is the best Wide angle option you have.

    Buying Helios 44 lenses its a good idea to look for the little symbol in front of the lenses. They were build by different companies and they have each their own symbol. The symbol with an arrow through a kind of rectangle and an oval circle is done by a company that used oil on the blades and had a very bad reputation regarding quality build. I learned this by a russian youtuber that review this kind of lenses.

    Sry for my english. You only get the swirley effect if you disassemble the lens and turn the lenses. Preferably the rear first lens and also the second front. It depends on the version of the lens. Not all can be contacted because of the vaulting. For me, one of the best picturesque lenses.

    This lovely lens is a copy of Carl Zeiss lens from the 30s, which was designed primarily having black and white photography in mind. Therefore Helios can be challenging with color performance, but Lightroom or using in-camera settings can help. The 44M-7 version of this lens is *fantastically* sharp but you have to make sure you get one that was made after 1993 because there are fakes (believe it or not). It is considered the Helios 58mm with the highest lens resolution afaik. The year of manufacture is determined by the first two numbers of the serial number. I have several versions of this lens including the one shown here. I also have a Zeiss Biotar upon which this lens was based, this too gives the characteristic swirly bokeh. The 44M-7 although sharp is not quite so extreme with the swirly bokeh.

    • @Linebrell
      @Linebrell 7 років тому +3

      Helios sharpness depends mostly of quality of your copy. After many years almost all of them were disassembled/repaired. And there was also poor quality control in USSR manufactures.
      I had 44-2, 44M-6, 44-3 and 77m-4. 44-3 was the sharpers one and it was pretty good in center, other were soft.
      And also 77m-4 can create stronger swirly effect, perfect for crop-bodies.

    • @BaddaBigBoom
      @BaddaBigBoom 7 років тому +3

      Thanks for that information Yaroslav, I have a number of them including the 44-3 44-2 44-7 and just the 44 all of them have very slight differences but one thing they all have in common as far as I am concerned is that they are brilliant. This lens really seems to like this time of year in UK with all the red and yellow leaves on the trees. I call it my "autumn lens" :-)

  • @TheBobes
    @TheBobes 7 років тому

    Bought one really ancient with big green "Made in USSR" stamped onto it. Works great on my 600D, bokeh is less swirly but still very nice considering it's probably 30+ years old piece of equipment. Plus it's cheap (depends where and when you buy it) and build proper being all metal you don't have to worry about it too much when shooting outside.

  • @caetanosilveira153

    Also its worth noting that you can often find vast differences in quality in these lenses--I've found mine to work beautifully, but some people have noted that due to age or other issues, that the lenses can act totally differently.

    If you have Nikon, then you can look for Helios 81N or any other soviet lens which has N letter at the end, they have Nikon F bayonet. For Pentaxes there is at least Helios 44K-4 which also does not need adapter.

  • @sreflectionbg

    One remark about the adapter, Chris! It could be having an effect on image quality! Some are cheap and not properly milled, so infinity cannot be achieved. Other like yours are shiny, not mat black, which can result in internal flaring with open aperture :)

    • @totmirmis
      @totmirmis 4 роки тому

      I have read that painted adaptors, the paint can flake over time, and that can damage the sensor. I am a little confused as to what to buy, I would sure like to get into vintage lenses. This one seems really special

    • @sreflectionbg
      @sreflectionbg 4 роки тому

      @@totmirmis I don't think damaging the sensor is on the table. The worst that could happen is reduced image quality. I think there was some video on a Jupiter 135 which has a internal element, thats shiny and the only consequence was reduced contrast and blooming. Pick a black adapter with AF chip and start experimenting. IMO Canon EF is one if the best platforms for using old lenses. Mirrorless cameras are more compatible with different old lens mounts, but there will be aways that crop factor, depending on sensor size.

  • @S3l3ct1ve
    @S3l3ct1ve 6 років тому +1

    This lens is probably the most reproduced lens in the world they made so many of these, they were made in millions of copies and in a lot of different models. The first one back in the 1960s had 13 aperture blades and were made according to zeiss biotar as the original formula. There were some with 10 blades, 8 blades and the newest ones has 6 blades. Now wide open the difference is none, but the more blades there are the better bokeh quality you get when the lens is stopped down.
    The Helios 44-2 with 8 blades is one of the oldest designs and produce noticeably warmer yellowish colors although it is not as sharp as the new ones with less aperture blades. The new ones produce colder bluish/greenish colors but are sharper and it doesnt offer the same look, the bokeh is the same - swirly, but overall contrast and sharpness greatly reduce the dreamy look you get with older design Helios 44 lenses.
    Also there is variation in copies because of the low manufacturing standarts and also because these lenses have been produced a long time ago and were used the whole time by someone. Build quality is insane - you can drop it on the ground and there wont be any noticeable damage done to them, the worst that can happen - bending the filter thread.
    IMPORTANT THING - be aware of Helios 44-3 because this is the only model you wont be able to use properly, because of the design - it has a focusing ring very close to the lens mount, this cause problem, when you screw the lens on the camera body, the focusing ring gets stuck and you wont be able to use focus at all..

    Thanks for video.
    Your lens have serial number starts from 85, this is year of lens manufacturing. It's made not in Russia, even earlier, lens made in USSR.
    Lens very soft, it's general idea of almost all Soviet/Russians lens and it good for portraits and nature.
    This lens have warm colors, near yellow.
    Lens have 7 modifications, your version is 2. Some lens have MC signs, it's enlightenment like as Canon red ring L series.
    In USSR this lens made on different plants, your is Jupiter.
    Helios 44 also was made on KMZ plant, now it plant in Shvabe holding and made new lens.
    New lens have Zenitar name, still manual, but have a great picture, closer to Canon lens.
    In English materials very tiny, but if you interesting you may try search new Helios 44-2, Zenitar 1,4/85 , Zenitar 1,2/50S.

    Would be nice if you do a review of some modern lenses from KMZ (the maker of Helios lenses) one day. This does come in line with your review policy since they are being produced and sold today. I have bought one recently (Zenitar 1.2/50s for a crop-censor) and although I like it a lot I would appreciate unbiased opinions too. Even in Russia there are quite few reviews of KMZ lenses since they are niche products - completely manual without any connections to a camera, just like the Helios-44-2 in your review. And I have not found any (reviews) on an English part of the internet.

    Love this lens for some unique looking portraits. I got my copy for around €30 I think. The center is quite sharp, the softness in the corners doesn't really matter to me as I only really use it at f/2 and the corners will be out of focus anyways
