This video was so much of a game charger for me! You have no idea
Thanks for watching and glad that it helped!
I'm a disciple of Joe Gilder (Home Studio Corner) and love his approach to mixing (been using it for almost 6 years), but you showed me something here that really does take it to a next level. I love the baseball analogy. I have been using Izotope's Visual Mixer to get initial volumes in a static mix, but even there, I'm finding it's not as accurate as your approach. Kudos. Great stuff.
Thanks! Appreciate the comment and glad that it was helpful for you.
Joe's my Man! ;-)
This is really informative. Thank you!
Thanks for watching! Glad you found it helpful.
Hey man, I've actually been searching the whole www on how to mix pop punk, and here I am! :D Do you by any chance have a video class on how to get this pop punk sound, both mixing- and arrangement wise? I'd give anything to learn to produce this kind of sound! What would help me most is maybe a class where we get the stems to e.g. the song you used in this video, and then mix it ourselves and then you make a video on how you mix it, and maybe a Q&A on top!
1/2 of this already exists. 😅 If you buy my book, The Objective Mix, you'll get access to these multitracks, and also you have the option to get an entire walkthrough of the mix for a small upgrade.
As far as production goes, I'd love to connect with you on what you're looking for specifically. Just sent you an email.
Great video! One thing that was glossed over a bit was setting the level of the snare that seems to be the anchor against which the other sounds are compared (in edm it would be the kick). The question is: what is a good level for the anchor sound? Of course, it must leave enough headroom to work with in the first place, but then what?
This is somewhat covered by gain-staging, which is another video coming up soon.
Set your snare's gain (when fader is at 0), to around -12 to -10db peak. Then, when volume balancing, bring it up to unity (0db) on the fader.
This assumes that your snare is the main element however, which isnt always the case.
Hopefully this helps!
thanks for a system to approach my mix, because without a system, things can be so overwhelming
Absolutely! Thanks for watching and commenting. Glad you found this helpful. 👍
Great job! Best regards from Poland :)
Thank you! Glad you found it helpful. 🤘
excelente
Very helpful
Questions: What is the nominal level of all your project files? Ex -3dB or...? How specifically are you using pink noise to get the industry standard eq profile? Thank you!
I don't get super scientific about it. I would actually be curious to dive into this more - as I've never really considered measuring this that specifically.
Also, I usually only measure this at the bigger parts of the song. Usually verses or smaller parts of the song may be darker than say, the lady chorus. But for those parts that need to be big, this is what I'm measuring against.
I'm usually just eye-balling it though. As you do it more, you'll recognize both the quality of sound if something is missing/overhyped, and see unusual dips and mountains on the analyzer.
At the end of the day, this is just the first time I'm using this to measure against. I keep the pink noise as a measuring stick after each stage of the mix, the EQ, Volume Balance, Compression, additional EQ, mix bus, effects, etc. It's one of the objective measures that allows me to ensure my mix sounds quality. So I don't get super hung up on it at any one stage unless there are big errors in my mix.
@@ObjectiveMixing Hi Doug. A very insightful reply. Thanks for TTT! I'd like to chat via email if there's an address you could share?

Suggestion from a graphic designer: the areas where the text formatting goes berzerk - try using a different font, or don’t italize it. This will improve the reading experience of your book.
Hey! Thanks for the suggestion. I'm working to get this fixed!

Missing the pre-delay, (early reflections) and frequency deterioration over distance in the discussion. Aural perception of distance is not defined by volume primarily. High pulse instruments (bass kick) in front of the vocals push it back too much (rule of the first wave) …

I’ve tried to buy ur £9 book but I pay on pay pal and then I get nothing ?
You should have received several emails - one to login to the online portal to access the book & bonuses, as well as a direct email with a download link for the book.
Check your spam and promo and let me know if you don't see it.
Sometimes it takes a few minutes.
Hi Ja I have the 2 free ones , but not the pay pal book ! But also it’s not going through on pay pal ???
i always thought that vocal is should be the closest to me.. you got me thinking...
It depends on the producer and genre for example bands like Red Hot Chilli Peppers got vocals louder but then go and listen to AC/DC the snare is on top
This is a general approach, you don't need to follow my plan, come up with your own plan! This isn't prescriptive.
But as a general rule for myself: I used to do the same thing, but over the last few years I've preferred the drums to be in the front providing the groove.
100%. There are general guidelines, but the point is to emphasize what is great about the song in question, not copy mine or anyone else's volume balance.
Volume balance? Ever heard "Neanderthal Man" by Hotlegs (later 10CC)? 😉 I guess there's always en exception to the rule.
Thanks for the comment.
This isn't a prescription, just what has worked for me that I share to help others if they find it helpful. You do whatever works for you!
❤
Thanks for the comment and for watching!
You don’t need to make videos, but also study and study!!! What you do is mixing??? This is at the level of a senior secondary school student! It’s a shame that such teachers allow themselves to teach others (((((
Okay. Thanks for sharing! It's such a shame that we have a society that allows teachers to be chosen off the results they get for their students, rather than the credentials they hold.
