The hull shape of American Magic is SO DAMN GORGEOUS! It looks like a piece of art!
Put a Compass, and wind direction indicator on all videos.
I second that! Since they are always going hard to weather, I find it difficult to figure out where the wind is coming from.
I wish a wind direction and speed indicator was included in the graphics, I actually can't understand why it isn't???
I also have a lot of questions like this. For instance how many races will they have? (I googled 'standings' and on the Americascup website was No information (1/3/2021). It's like they're just talking to themselves, yet they repeat a lot of the same stuff over and over again. It's a hothouse - they're in it; apparently they don't know what it's like outside.
As for wind direction. This is a fascinating aspect. Because these boats travel so fast the actual wind velocity has to be vector added with the boat's velocity (speed and direction) to get the apparent wind. They can have an actual wind beam-on (from the side) and yet the sails are set at a tacking angle (into the wind) because the resultant apparent wind direction is so different. (To sketch the wind vectors make sure you draw the boat's wind speed vector against the direction of travel.)
One would think they'd include this information because the sail settings seem very subtle to me. I guess they're tacking, but is it gybing? Maybe they're afraid we'll start loitering around the yacht club....
@@WillN2Go1 yep, I mean I'm not hugely knowledgeable on sailing by any means, but even for a sailing lay person like myself seeing wind direction relative to the course and boats makes it so much easier to understand what's going on with the tack and gybe manoeuvres and tactics....
In addition to the commentators who talk over the umpire who talks over the skippers who talk over the annoying mechanical noises of their boats, maybe you could have James Earl Jones read some classic poems about sailing and also add a little steel band music in the background as an artistic touch... just a thought!
I dont mind the sound of the boats that much, but the commentators have nothing to add (except Shirley, she is by far the only one with actual info)
Haha :D You actually have a point!
Lol
They feel that they're paid to talk, so that they have to keep talking. They should lower the cockpit audio when they are going to make important points, and then bring it up, instead of constantly yammering on about Star Wars and terms some engineer told him , that he can't remember, e t c., e t c.!
와~ 2226m라니
'딘 바커' 키잡이, 축하합니다~
Wow~ 2226m~
'Dean Barker' helmsman,
Congratulations 🎊
Put the VMG speed with the boat speed so we know how fast the boats are approaching the mark. Other racing series such the Vendee Globe is adding VMG and wind speed to the realtime information.
Yes this... It appears that all of the teams have very close top speeds but Patriot seems to point better. It wod be nice to see this information.
according to google info, 1 knot converts to 1.15 mph. I needed to get things into a perspective I'm used to. They are converting 15kn (17.25mph ) wind speed into 28.4kn ( 32.66mph) boat speed. Unreal! They were doing something like 45kn the other day. That is 51 miles per hour! Almost as fast as cars going down the highway. Just ... wow!
yes truly amazing...and if you've ever been on a boat speeds on water feel almost twice as fast as on land.
Sorry guys but probably you just guessing about the the conversion between nautical miles and knots. 1 nautical mile is = 1 knot... 1 nautical mile is = 1856 meters = 1.856 km. Now do the math.
@@danilosodano4372 Ok and Google was correct. 1856 meters times 3.28 feet/meter is 6087.68 feet. Divide that by 5280 ft /mile and you get 1.1529... 1.15 miles per kt. I was in the Coast Guard long enough (4 yrs) to know that if the wind was going that fast, the waves would be much bigger and the tops would be having spray whipped off them. Amazing engineering.
Coming off the 1 + minute loss to NZ, Golly- they look so SMOOTH. Go NYYC, go Dean & go Patriot!!!
Ineos needs another 10% boatspeed to be competitive. It will be a combination of foils, hull, rudder and getting the software to perform. I don’t think it’s the guys in the boat. Well done every other team for getting so far ahead.
You know there's a major concern when viewers of the AC videos are no longer discussing the races in the comments but are discussing the poor audio the video has.
In the past, I have raced my own boat offshore, and around the buoys and I have even been crew on some match races but in these races, not only am I not able to figure out strategy, but most of the time, I have no idea where the wind is coming from by just watching the boats.
PWM or pulse width modulation is an old term brother. Its an electronics term so maybe no so popular in the sailing world? Its very popularly used in your automobile to control fuel injection, the charging of the alternator / generator, fan speed, etc. Its an ON and OFF pulse of the power. if you have 50% PWM, the fan will run at half speed as opposed to the older days of the fan either being turned on completely and operating at full speed or simply turned off. Today a computer can receive many types of input information and via an algorithm control another device on the output of the computer via PWM. It is possible to control the ground side rather than the power side. I am not a sailor but when I see this sail pivoting at the aft end of the boat, I see it move slowly or quickly, this could be a PWM signal at 40% or 90% to control the speed of movement.
Dankeschön!
With bow down, mast rake on American magic is straight vertical; INOES TEAM UK is raked back the same distance as head of mainsail-wing when sailing level; still raked aft when "bow-down"
INEOS has many small details on the hull that looks draggy compared to the others. Wide personal area (this also takes pressure out of the sail and lift out of the hull ), Front boom has its bolt stikking out. It has cross stiffener in the back and many more. This boat is not at the same level as the others. It look like an early prototype. But big respect to the team for not giving up an keep up fighting .
You should have told them. The millions spent on development was clearly wasted if random internet guy can see their issues through videos.....
@@sheilamorrison1954 Why are they the slowest team ?
@@MrLawc Because they clearly dont have the CAD level design eye you do through retrospective hind sight video...obviously. That and it was designed with stronger breeze in mind and they could change their foils etc. But hey, ignore that, you got it nailed.
@@sheilamorrison1954If it was designed for high breeze why is skeage the biggest of the field ? It's CFD where you see aerodynamic drag. Just explaining why sick man of europe is also losing in sports now. And another example of British engineering going downhill since the steam engine. (I don't mean that ) Come one 😗 you brits has become so touchy. It just a technical discussion about boat design.
@@MrLawc Im not a Brit...Im American. Nice try though.
“My wheel” comes from standard aircraft cockpit language (pilot and co-pilot changing) which is not surprising in this sport as they are truly FLying!
something tells me that terminology originated from sailing... might be the 1000s of years of sailing before humanity started flying.
Auckland. Covid free! Yes even the whole of New Zealand! Wonderful harbour. I am in the provinces of NZ but just the love Auckland water,
Lol
No apologies necessary. He was right on when he said that.
Why do they bother with manual grinders when hydraulics are allowed? If hydraulics are allowed why do they bother with sails? What is the point of America’s Cup anymore if these are essentially power boats?
Why don't they just stick down the other foil when they drop into the water. More lift would surely make them rise back up quicker (and at a slower speed)?
The rules have been declared that only one of the two hydrofoils can be down at a time except for Maneuvers such as turning. I agree with you. It should be allowed.
these machines (I even hesitate calling them sailboats) are just incredible, and incredible to watch them flying above the water as well. BUT: on the other hand I find it even kind of sad watching full grown strong professionel sportsmen, real sailors (the grinders) being reduced to simple "power-packs" for the boats. And no more sail settings and changings for extra speed or tactics. It is fascinating, but is it still "sailing"?
potato potatoe
@@johnq.public2621 yes, it’s boring.need a radical course redesign
This was sailtrip 11 not race 11. Nice boats for speedrecords, but not for exciting close racing.
I bet that high pitch noise is a similar instrument to a sail plane. The higher the pitch the more lift, lower pitch, less lift
Sorry folks, but these new boats make some noises, so you just have to deal with it, maybe turn your volume down. Stop complaining, and try to enjoy the competition. U.S.A.!!! 🇺🇸💯
We want the old boats (2000, 2003, 2007)
Boats making noise isn't the issue - the issue is layering boat noises + sailor talk + booth commentators + on-water reporters + umpires . . . it's very poor sound engineering / control.
It is exhausting to listen to. The mix is not right. Listen at 14:05, the water for the tea of team UK is boiling.
This place is full of armchair experts that only complain. Get a grip people.
@@giancarlic1 Seriously? How can you not get excited about a sailboat that can hit 50 knots?
This is sailing? race 11 Foil not foiling and you nearly never mention wind speed or direction WTF
Beauty beauty beauty
I think the onboard mics need to be tuned to be less sensitive. They keep picking up all the creaks and groans of the boats going through the water, and especially when they are raising and lowering their foils. This would be ok, but then it becomes harder to hear the commentary. Maybe see if you can edit out the noises of the boats and keep the crew chatter, or figure out how to turn down the mics sensitively so it doesn’t constantly pick up every creak and groan as loudly.
Might make it a bit easier to hear the commentary/crew chatter without the background noise drowning it out. Or annoying some of the other viewers of these races with how people keep bringing the noises up in the comments.
All that could be easily fixed if there was a quality audio/video editor doing these videos.
This Airbus flies better than their planes!
you've ruined the whole nature of Match Racing when you have to drop behind to clear a penalty. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE someone win the Cup who will go back to interesting match racing
Ineos is difficult to watch but Shirley is difficult to listen too
That was painful to watch -- INEOS is not likely to be able to adequately address the light wind problem given the time available and the fact that they've already burned through all 6 of the foil allotments. AM had one problem that cost them 400m and in many races that would be the end so this light wind problem isn't just with ENEOS -- OTH, the light wind problem is particularly bad for ENEOS. Touch when you have so many smart prideful people and there staring into the abyss.
It looks like Ineos’s foils pull the hull into the water when raising the arm in a tack. Maybe to much center chord.
And look at the size of the skeg compared to the other boats. I am very curious about this and would love to hear something from the commentators about it.
When you gotta' go you gotta' go 41:36. Taking a 'leak' off the back of the boat.
i reckon they are sandbagging the coverage haha. obviously it could be improved very easily. when the actual prada cup starts they will make it legit with the numbers we all want to see and a reasonable audio mix. also because maybe the teams arennt allowed to have consistant data about the other boats until the prada cup. and the racing seams to be exciting enough that people will stick around anyway
Ridiculously poor quality broadcasting of races uploaded days after they have actually taken place.
That's what's called a "Horizon job."
Rake the mast tip 3 to 6 feet forward
It's amazing the whole world isn't glued to this event!?!?!
Nar its crap...
Probably because the event has ended.
If they are into real sailing they are watching the Vendée Globe or the Jules Verne trophy. No mirror seas there.
Ben, what are you 12? living on an island? I’m ‘amazed’ at your comment. With only 600 subscribers to this page, (500 of whom are related to someone involved with the event), it proves the sailing world doesn’t give a crap about this event, much less the rest of the world...and they shouldn’t. Real sailors don’t find this entertaining, relevant or educational. Time for you to expand your horizons, maybe start with cat videos.
@@alanmonroe6585 I’m not a sailor at all, and I find these boats absolutely fascinating. Like F1 cars. I also watch vendee globe and Volvo ocean, and enjoy them for different reasons. I find your comment completely in line with the stereotype of yacht club douchebags. Time to stop being a douchebag, start with trying to not be a douchebag.
After watching these boats it is painful to watch water displacement cup races.
what is that item on the back of the deck with the blinking green light?
I think it’s a whole bunch of stuff including camera, gps, communication transmitter/receiver and a visual indicator whether they’re under penalty or not. But then, I’m just guessing.
This is from December LAST YEAR (2020! Presumably they're just reposting the old videos to get more clicks.
Not more clicks but attempting to screen one race at a time instead of the full 4 hour screening they currently have on that day.
What they should do is put the date in the description to avoid confusion.
Yeah the lack of date and time in the title or description makes me wonder if they are intentionally trying to make it confusing to follow.
@@DenfordBerriman maybe not intentionally.
Given the Prada cup begins on the 15th. They maybe trying to give the cup some build up by giving us the races one at a time from last month.
This keeps the channel active and their subscribers and supporters interested in the space left till race day.
I do however think it's totally unprofessional to not date these races but am not surprised by it as of late.
Think its power of the rig not the shape of foils
Why haven't the Chinese bought this race yet ?
what is guys doing by pedaling?
Creating hydraulic pressure for the control surfaces of the yacht
Who's pedalling?
Andrew Mitchell Kiwis did - unsure if their new boat has a similar arrangement.
@@Aasn9 yes in 2017.
Pedalling is forbidden in this cup regatta so I don't understand why someone is asking what the guys are doing by pedalling when there's clearly no pedalling on any of the videos shown.
@@mitchand9 arm pedalling?
these americas cup rules are NOT matching racing anymore..... It is basically glorified drag racing. Go straight and minimize tacking at all costs
"60% of the time all the time" I think is a Ron Burgundy reference.
ua-cam.com/video/IKiSPUc2Jck/v-deo.html
Sounds like to me they just need to put some grease on them
My guess is Ineos is just not getting enough lift from the foils. Other teams lift out of the water before tacking and settle back down as they pick up speed. But Ineos always seems to settle down while tacking, and lift back up when picking up speed....like they don't have any "extra" lift to make adjustments on the fly.
Don,t you know, Britainia rules the waves.........
The problems with each boat have become obvious watching them sail.
Te Rehuti is fast because it is well sailed and technically better than the other boats.
The sails are better constructed to give a higher lift aerofoil which makes the boat faster.
The hydrofoils are a larger lift area giving an advantage in light winds.
They also trim better.
The hull shape gives an advantage with better stability.
The better longitudinal trim system keeps the boat on a more even keel increasing boat speed.
I like Luna Rossa.
But its sails are not as well constructed as the NZ boat.
American Magic has a number of problems.
The hydrofoil is a poor design. The sails do not compare with the NZ boat.
The hydro mechanical controls leave many questions
Britannia is a disaster.
Poor sails, bad hydrofoils, Low grade trim controls and dare I say it not very good boat management.
Boat height over water on foils.
Pros and cons.
Closer to water gives better forward propulsion in theory.
However the higher the sail the better wind propulsion.
Good sail to deck contact improves lift.
Having too close to water surface risks hull contact and speed reduction.
The more of the hydrofoil in contact with water reduces speed through drag.
The higher the boat the greater the turning moment due to wind pressure.
What is the happy medium.
I think keep it fairly high out of the water on an even keel.
The standing rigging on US boat oscillates a lot making a lot of noise so this is not aerodynamic.
These are the most exciting boats I have ever seen racing but there is a lot of room for improvement.
They are NOT FUNNY noises. You continue to tell viewers how high tech these boats are, well sort your comms out or you will certainly lose thousands of new viewers to sailing.
Its like BREXIT 2.0 . UK fucked up.
Give back monohull without foils to AC. This is absurd and not fun at all to watch.
Monohull race is more exciting that match racing.
Watching paint dry isn't fun to watch either.
Whattt??? This is awesome.
Yes, the technology and the boats are awesome. But when I watch AC I wanna see match racing. Win by over 2 kilometers is not match racing.
@@Kaugon so when black magic pulled out wins by nearly 5 minutes in 95 that wasn't match racing?
What the hell is that high pitched noise?
Lol. I think it's the carbon fiber twisting as she trims.
My mother screaming at me for not doing the dishes on Sunday evenings.
Lack of quality audio editing
What in hell is that high pitched squeal?
I think it might be the onboard microphones with wind rushing past them. Because they are picking up all the other creaks and groans the boats are making, especially when they are bringing the foils up and down.
That or the high pitch noise is like the onboard microphones being placed too close together so they are picking each other up and casing issues.
The squeal/ whistle is the resonance of the foils in the water.
@@stefanzzz6778 well i ain't going to watch and LISTEN any more.
