  • It's almost a year since the newly-elected government took the hugely unpopular decision to remove winter fuel payments from all but the poorest pensioners.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
Today, the Chancellor said she had listened and is restoring the payment to the vast majority of pensioners this winter.
But where will the money come from and does this u-turn come too late to undo the political damage?

What I will find impossible to forgive or forget is that Labour MP's cheered when the WFA vote passed. I didn't see it but apparently there was a bit of fist-bumping, too.
The reason for the current U-turn isn't because Labour has realised the difficulties the elderly faced last winter and has genuine regrets: the cheering proved that they don't have any genuine empathy. No: this is because Reform ousted them from many seats in the recent local elections and Labour MP's fear that, with four more winters to go - some of which may be more severe for the elderly than others - they may lose their seats.

Have you received a fuel bill lately. A ‘decent’ pension does not always cover every eventuality. For example, some pensioners need to bail out those of the ‘current generation.’
The question is, why should those who have not contributed to society receive more? Granted, it may not always be their fault, but some people fritter their income away without making provision for their old age. Do those that make such provisions deserve to be penalised?

@@Chafflives Right and it was means tested so those on the lowest income still got it.
And those that contributed 30 years ago haven't contributed to the same extent as to what they're now taking out.
That's why todays pensioners are not paying for their own pensions from 30 years ago. It's todays youth that is paying it. That's just how it works. You might want to brush up on that.
Todays youth are forced into mandatory pension contributions unless they opt out. Where was that 30 years ago? Oh that's right, it wasn't a thing and todays pensioners got all of their wages and on top of that had much lower expenses and the opportunity of house ownership on a single wage.
It's no wonder people aren't having children these days and we rely on immigration to keep up with employment. We need it.

‘Haven’t contributed to the extent they are now taking out.’ Utter nonsense.
We had to struggle hard to get on the housing ladder even then. ON TWO WAGES.
The trouble with today’s generation is that they want it all and they want it NOW.
We rely on immigrants to do the work that today’s citizens feel is beneath them.
Life has always been tough. It’s just that today’s people lack resilience.

Really is time this joke of a chancellor was sacked , she's Nigel Osborne 2.0 , Starmer needs to get a grip and find himself a chancellor capable of thinking outside the tory box , one that's worthy of the job in a centre left government.
