The Van Dyke seems to making a big comeback, from what I'm seeing, even if you disagree it shouldn't be on this list, it's a timeless classic, and is a much better look than just ''acceptable'', IMO.
I don't think the beard is the problem but definitely the people wearing them. Your beard should fit your face and we'll the van dyke is definitely a hard one
Amish beards and those of other groups are a symbol of their commitment to pacifism, from a time in the 18th and 19th centuries when having a strong beard or moustache was a requirement of soldiers in most European standing armies as a sign of being warriors. It looks odd in the 21st century aesthetically, but isn't to be ridiculed really.
That's actually really interesting. They could update to full beards because you can't wear a gas mask with one (which is a requirement for modern military service), but I think the symbolic aspect of it is awesome
My grandfather, who is French, had a Hitler mustache in the 1930s, when it was popular. One day a man on a train told him that my granddad looked like Hitler. He shaved it the next morning.
If you're a fan of Old timey fashion and media like I am then pencil mustaches were a common sight, many black and white actors had it. I love this mustache and I think a young guy looks great with it
Hahaha I laugh so much specially about the pencil mustache and neckbeard!! I really like the video and I can relate to a lot of what you saying Eric, please do similar videos, hope to see every BB Alliance member do a thoughts of beard styles too!!
I had a full beard for over a year but it still looked patchy. I shaved down to a mustache and soul patch (the Zappa) and feel like I have a new face. I play music professionally so it fits my social/work circle
Dude these are the most slept on styles! If you did something creative and interesting with these styles you could be the person who single handedly brings them back! 😳
I had the thin chinstrap without a mustache during the 2000s too. Must’ve been a trend at the time. The beard became part of my main look in 2010. As for the pencil mustache, I feel that is one reason I have not been to the barber in ten years. Aside from having to travel extensively, most of the barbers in my area would have commented negatively about going for either a “less carved” look or a longer beard and mustache before they became cool in urban environments. Part of the irony (especially today being the anniversary of El Grito de Lares,) a physician/political activist had a long beard (Ramon Emeterio Betances.)
I've been trying to grow a fu manchu since my 16th, I'm now 23 and when I put moustache wax in it, I actually have two loose tendrils of like 2 -3 centimeters (about an inch) long, with a single hair passing my jawline. (had another one a longer while ago, but it fell off pretty fast) Maybe in a few years it'll really come through! :) I combine it with a long, thin beard portraying from the middle, but keeping the sides (where the tendrils hang) clean shaven. I've actually been thinning out my beard throughout the years, as my moustache started growing in and my beard started growing longer & a bit thicker. I also shave the middle part of the moustache, so I basically have a '2 part' moustache so to speak. The part right under my nose is shaven. So my moustache is really distinct from a 'horseshoe', which is really a different moustache all together as it aren't 2 tendrils but a combination with the hair below the moustache, which is shaven off on a fu manchu. I don't like those 2 being put under the same category. You wouldn't put a dali moustache with a pencil or a 'walrus' either, e.g., would you? Shaving the middle part, creating two distinct tendrils, loose whiskers, parts; also makes it quite distinct from a dali. It's not an inverse dali, it's not a horseshoe. It's an actual fu manchu. But not *yet* portraying past my jawline. I have naturally quite curly hair though, so it's not the easiest, but I've wanted a fu manchu since I was 14. haha Never actually seen one in real life, even online you barely find anything about it. The same couple of pictures. Most from the actual character called fu manchu. (like shown in this video) So it's mostly a work & experiment in progress, and hope that nothing serious will happen to my moustache, as those few long hairs are quite delicate to keep healthy & safe of course.
I love you guys! Since years I felt all alone with my first class handle bar Moustache in Germany, but you spend me so much power I can got throug this for another 20 years. 🍻
Yes indeed, not having a beard, where it would naturally be growing, is by far the worst. The shaved face appears mutilated. Like a plucked parrot. Its just sad! Dont shave!
The chin strap is a beard style that I still rock to this day because it suits my face shape and that's the most facial hair I can get with it. I can't grow a full beard since one side of my face grows patchy, so a chin strap helps make my facial hair look full.
When I clicked on this ,I was thinking a guy with a mullet and "pornstache" is about to let me know the styles he hates.I'm glad you addressed it right off the bat.Grow your beard back,it looks better.Good stuff.
I grew both the Van Dyke and the Soul Patch. My Van Dyke was cool as hell but it was very tedious to shave around. My soul patch or "lower lip mustache" had been on my face for years.
You missed the "landing strip" similar to the soul patch, but just a strip of hair that grows from the bottom of your lip to under your chin. A truly hideous facial hair style.
I’ll say this ... you have some confidence in your 90s corvette driving, collapsable pool cue toting, seagrams wine cooler drinking, Def Leopard Paranoia cassette on replay style ...
Bruh... My beard won't grow on the sides of my face, so in like past 10 years (I'm 28) I went from soul patch, to goatee and now I was thinking about that van dyke style. But I see that you put every one of them on the list so what am I supposed to grow? I'm not that confident to wear just the chevron :D
Depend on some guys. I'd been wanting to have either a full beard or a friendly mutton chops like my favorite mutant but i can't grow a sideburns part. I'm stuck with the regular,a little bushy mustache.
I lost a bet once and had to go shopping with Hitler stache (shaving my 6 months old beard in the proces of making it was part of the deal too)... oh boy the looks people gave me :D :D :D hillarious
Hitler used to have an awesome mustache in the 1910's actually, look it up. A young guy with a mustache like that looks incredibly attractive and cool (he used to be young in that time). I don't remember why he changed it to the broom style but he had a reason for it
Yeah, i wasn't a digging it when Carlos tried the pencil stache. I tried put the mutton chops one time, though i can't connect my mustache to the rest of my facial hair, so i just shaved it and started all over. Right now I'm growing out my goatee and have been trimming my sides and mustache short to stubble length, and have been shaving my neck.
i'm on my 16 years and i have a lot of facial hair growing up, i am thinking of doing the mutton chops because i think it's a very badass style, take Lemmy from motorhead for example, the shape of my face suits the style so i think i'll rock it, whether it'll look cool or not i'm doing it
Luckily a lot of those aren’t possible for me as I can’t really grow dense facial hair. Almost none on the sides and cheeks. I’m limited to a few. Few day old growth moustache, soul patch combo with a bit on the chin is all that looks good on me and lasts about a week until it looks odd and then just end up being clean shaven.
I hate the soul patch! When I see one it makes my chin itch. Pencil staches were the trademarks of old actors like Don Ameche and Clark Gable. I never cared for them (not sexy in my opinion), but I like trivia. 😁
Just gonna throw it out there. Not as much of a fan of the "negative title" videos you guys at Beardbrand are creating lately. But, to each his own. Just miss your down to earth, no judgment old videos.
I've been bald for quite a while now, and i was rocking a chin strap for several years, which suited me fine. Then i got older and dropped it for a soul patch (just to leave something there), and it looked real jazzy. Now I'm sporting a slightly grown out goatee (traditional, not circle beard), and i friggin love it, also getting a lot of good feedback from people i meet and work with. Also, in between the last two i went ahead and tried growing a full beard for half a year, which was crazy, and going back to a lighter style felt really cool. So know your face, bros, try what you want and see if it fits. Also remember it might not be good for you in a couple of years.
thing is people tend to see themselves differently to how others see them so we tend to think something looks good on us when others think it makes us look like a creepy nonce or something. the workmates saying you looked good probably just didnt want to hurt your feelings, they'd probably tell a guy with a hideous comb over that it looks good
@@adamJHLS could be. Or could be that it really works well with how my face and attitude changed over the last three or so years. The right facial hair allows you to have the confidence and to express the vibe that you have more clearly, and I finally feel it.
The chinstrap aint a bad beard look if your like me and cant grow any cheek hair, it only looks bad if you shave it too thin but i think if you have patchy cheeeks and shave it down to where its thickest along the jaw it doesnt look half bad. If anything it would be more of a low cheekline beard rather then a actuall chinstrap if yall know what i mean.
The soul patch would have to be on my list as #1 worst. What's the point of having that little patch of hair growing under your lip, especially if it's only 8 or 10 strands of hair, like I've seen some people with...... absolutely hideous. By the way..... that mustache of yours Eric..... awesome! Wish I had one like that.
I wouldn't do the toothbrush one, not because of Hitler, but because of Chaplin. Also, I've been wearing a fusion of chinstrap and goatee for a few years now, and it's been my best style so far.
The broom mustache may have been iconic for Hitler and Chaplin, but Hitler actually used to have a very cool and good looking mustache when he was younger, it looked way better than the broom style imo. I don't remember why he changed it but there was a reason for it
@@MybeautifulandamazingPrincess Yes, he had a thick curled mustache that was popular for the time, but his reasons for changing it are still unknown to me.
Eric, any advice on how to deal with face masks training your beard the wrong way, i.e. molding the beard to stay tucked in too close to the neck when you look at it from the side. Im talking about the respirators that push your beard back towards your neck.
Things are gonna do what things are gonna do. If you're working with a longer styled beard, my recommendation would be to focus on your shower game. Co-washing is the best way to keep your beard soft and pliable. Then, you can work with the right styling tools like a blow dryer and styling balm to help keep things relatively in place. You have to keep in mind that this method isn't fully sustainable but you can set yourself up for the possible outcome. -Sly 🤜
A think what makes a fu man chu is the thinness of the long mustache. I know people who have thick mustaches that run down into their beard and I definitely wouldn’t consider that a fu man chu.
You hit the main ones...but my pet peeve are beards that follow the jawline and from the side view looks like a chin strap of the Royal Guards at Buckingham Palace. The face looks like it outgrew its beard.
Hahaha. I didn't even watch this. Just to keep it real. I got 59 seconds into it. Some fuckin' yahoo with a high pitched voice, a shitty ass silver chain around his neck, a mullet and a scraggly ass neck beard talking about styles and shit. I already know what the worst style is. You hit the main ones...but my pet peeve are beards that follow the jawline and from the side view looks like a chin strap of the Royal Guards at Buckingham Palace. The face looks like it outgrew its beard.
Decided to shave my beard and as a goof I shaved up a friendly muttonchop. Well it worked and stuck with it.
I still think the soul patch is alright with the right style and the right person, but maybe I am wrong.
I agree with you but perhaps Im also wrong
I think a goatee keeps a man sharp rather than a beard
I thought clean shaven was the worst facial hair style?
Its not even a facial hair style at all, because theres no hair on your face.

@GreenTree indeed it is
I think you nailed that list!
I'd like to have a Pencil Thin Mustache so I can solve some Mysteries too...
My grandpa be rocking a very thin pencil mustache
I think mutton chops without the stache are actually kinda neat at least on some people
You should do top ten worst hairstyles because yours would be up there.
Hahaha. I didn't even watch this. Just to keep it real. I got 59 seconds into it. Some fuckin' yahoo with a high pitched voice, a shitty ass silver chain around his neck, a mullet and a scraggly ass neck beard talking about styles and shit. I already know what the worst style is. I don't need 9 more.
