My dad still talks about this game, and of course the previous game against Essendon at Waverley. I was only 2 at the time, but for the Roys to get this result on that day was just unbelievable. Most players were on one leg by that time of the season and a massive crowd at the G....most Roys players had never played in front of crowds like that every before, not even close. Reading the various books and articles on 86, the Roys players were pooped by this point and got done by Hawthorn comprehensively the following week. What a team though: ROOS, WILSON, OSBORNE, QUINLAN, CONLON, PERT, RENDELL, BARWICK, HARRIS. Great memories of them all.
If Maguire gets his way North Melbourne will be the next team exterminated! He's forgotten that Collingwood were in a similar position recently, but hey, can't let the 'woods die! Teams like Nth Melbourne, (my team), Footscray, perhaps even StKilda and Hawthorn would be on the target list so they can thin the Vic based clubs out. Ironically, it was the VFL that all the top players wanted to play in yet all the tradition and fan loyalty counts for nothing with the corporates. BTW Fitzroy were also my second team at school. My best friend was Fitzroy mad and our school footy jumper was the Fitzroy maroon and blue but without the emblem. My friend managed to scrounge the number 13 for his team jumper, his favourite player Alex Ruscuklic. I wanted number 4 (Sam Kekovich) but missed out.

so many other clubs were virtually broke.. Hawthorn, Melbourne, Footscray, & Richmond.. but they were given a helping hand.. & all went on to b power houses & win premierships after 2000.. why does the AFL pump money into them & dead beats like Gold coast? but abandoned won of the traditional great clubs?

In a way Fitzroy technically should have been folded in 1986. They were lucky to last another 10 years. The AFL Centenary season in 1996. Kind of fitting in some weird way.
Not exactly, the Brisbane Lions would’ve never existed, which means that either Fitzroy and/or the Bears could’ve had premiership success between 2001-2003
2020 has proven just how bad modern day football really is. Footy was at its peak between 1995 - 2004 and then fell off a cliff due to flooding and congestion

Fitzroy should never have been allowed to die.
Who would've thought these 2 teams would play in the 2024 GF
I was at this game Fitzroy were like my second team

1:15, today that would have to be either holding the ball or holding the man lol
back when the umpires knew how to bounce the ball
I’d prefer an ump who can make correct decisions than an ump who can bounce it well
The refs now suck at decisions
@@BasedMothmani think they rather do neither nowadays
WE ARE THE BOYS FROM OLD FITZROY!
(Only like the theme, not from Fitzroy or born when Fitzroy was in the AFL)

Because Fitzroy were actually broke

Unfortunately yes, they nearly collapsed completely mid season, and the afl had to fund them till the end of the season.

Quote me if I'm wrong didn't Sydney finish 2nd that year gone out in straight sets. The 2 games they played in should have been at SCG?
Imagine if Quinlan scored 3:45
you know fitzroy could of had the longest drought if they didnt merge it would of been 76 years in 2020

Laugh at so many players wearing the lace up jumpers, banned later due to finger breaks.
I agree loved Fitzroy the afl destroyed them.with .no mercy
Kind of ironic this game is on the AFL UA-cam channel
Unpopular opinion: modern day football is 100x better
Josh Glancy I absolutely agree.
NO not really the deliberate rule and holding the ball rule has ruined it . And AFLW ???? The gimmick of all gimmicks.
Skills wise? Yes. Entertaining? Not so exciting. Very predictable.
But I will say there has been some great modern games of footy most definitely.

Fitzroy what a joke 9 years later became extinct and I smiled

Flog.
