    As always another very enjoyable video. With reaching Lamont you have officially reached the area I came from. Lamont, Aurora & Stanley are all towns that received some coverage in the Oelwein paper & radio station. So, just talking about it brought back some memories, including High School rivalries as Lamont was part of the Starmont District (STrawberry point, ARlington & laMONT). The thing that most caught my attention was when the CGW had to use the IC tracks, I would suspect that they went to where the IC met the Rock Island by Independence & took the RI to Oelwein. The IC owned Dubuque bridge is how the CGW came into Iowa. Now the successor to the IC, Canadian Nation is merging with the railroad that currently serves Oelwein over the CGW track from Waterloo to Oelwein, the Iowa Northern. Technically, it is the Chicago Central that operates the system in Iowa. But my point is, barring the CN stopping the service to Oelwein, probably unlikely, Oelwein will once again be connected to Dubuque, if a little indirectly.
    Will be looking forward to your next stops at the Stanley & Aurora area.

      I, too, am wondering about the any changes in Oelwein and Manly IA especially

      Thanks once again for the thoughtful comments and observations! Very interesting regarding the merger of the CN and Iowa Northern. It is sometimes difficult to keep track of the mergers and acquisitions. :-) Glad that we brought back some memories on our trip through Lamont. Aurora and Stanley we hope are interesting as well. We were given another rare opportunity when in Aurora, to follow along the Right of Way for a few miles. Stanley too had its charms - and nice people all along the way. Thanks again!

    Now you're into my families territory. George Foster was my grandfathers great uncle if I remember correctly, the Fosters came to the area after the Civil War and settled there and the surrounding areas of Aurora, Mudville, Independence and Waterloo. My great-grandfather Alfred E. Brown also ran the Lamont Leader newspaper in the early 1900's. Great series, wish you could go all the way to Council Bluffs.

      Ah, that's very interesting regarding your relationship to George Foster! And to your relationship with Alfred E Brown! You have some deep Lamont roots! Glad that you are enjoying the series and finding it informative. That makes it all worthwhile for us!

    I have watched all 21 videos in this series and have enjoyed each and every one of them! The two of you are to be commended for this undertaking. It is obvious that there has been much time and effort in research the history of each as well as the editing..............after all the hours traveling shooting the video. Keep up the excellent work and I will be looking forward to the rest of the series to Oelwein, IA. I'll now start on the Chicago, Aurora and Elgin series.

      @@BeHistoric A bit of discloser about my interest in these videos. I worked for Canadian National Railroad retiring in 2018. (Yes my avitar shows me playing a saxophone. Before the railroad i was a band director for 14 years.) A big share of my life that I will never get back was sitting at Bellwood on the IHB waiting to get into UP Proviso. I tried to imagine what it looked like "back in the day". Your videos filled in some blanks regarding Bellwood. Also, I was on company business and spent time in Fort Dodge, Iowa in 2014. I took pictures of the CGW bridge there now owned by Union Pacific. An impressive structure to say the least. In addition, while in supervision from 1998 -2004, I hi-railed from Independence, Iowa to Dubuque on the CN/IC. Unfortunately I didn't cross the river and go through the tunnel. However, I did stop at Field of Dreams. Keep up the outstanding work. The CA&E vidoes are also very informative.

    Thank you for all the information that you presented in this video on the Chicago Great Western Railroad's facilities in Lamont, Iowa and for the historic information on the town of Lamont from its beginnings to 2024. The book, Chicago Great Western: Depots Along the Corn Belt Route by Joe Pierson and Jerry Huddelston confirms all your remarks about the depot at Lamont, Iowa. The photograph of Herbert Snodgrass that appears at 11:54 in your video is the same photograph that appears in the lower right corner of Page 5 of the above-mentioned book. There is no mention of other CGW buildings or facilities at Lamont, Iowa since the book is about depots. I was amazed that so many derailments took place in or near Lamont, Iowa as you reported in the video. Of all the Chicago Great Western depots that you have mentioned in this series on CGW depots, I think that Lamont, Iowa is the location with the most derailments. At the end of the video, you mention that there are two more towns that we will visit before we reach Oelwein, Iowa. Are we going to have one or two more videos on the Chicago Great Western depots? When he says they will visit two towns in "their next adventure," I could assume there might be two videos with the Grand Finale being Oelwein

      Thanks as always for the additional information and for the thoughtful comments and observations regarding our videos! We always look forward to them! Lamont did seem to experience a number of derailments - but many other stations did too. Sometimes we don't talk about all of the derailments at other locations, especially when there is already more than sufficient material to cover. Otherwise, many videos would get extremely long. Sometimes we report on some of the more interesting accidents and derailments - tragic stories, interesting cargo, typical days in the lives of railroad operators, etc. Regarding next videos, our plan as of now is to do the next video regarding Aurora and Stanley, and then to do a final video regarding Oelwein, as that in itself is an important topic. We will likely be doing a few more CGW videos following that (at least) - going back to cover a few spurs that we missed (eg Sycamore to Dekalb), and to discuss new findings since we started the series. People have kindly sent us additional information, or we've learned of new things as we've researched and explored - and so some places might be worth a second look. We'll see. Hope that helps! And thanks again for the continuing support!

    Dunkerton historical society is moving the CGW depot originally from Lincoln (Berlin) Iowa that is currently north of Dunkerton into their new historical complex and going to be starting restoration on it. Well worth the look

    • @tonydixon7820
      @tonydixon7820 2 місяці тому +1

      And Lincoln might not be much but to my understanding it was the highest point on the line between Olwien and Marshalltown, on top of that while you're in the local area you also had both the Chicago northwestern and Chicago Great Western depots in Gladbrook Iowa the last of the chicago and northwestern depots is still in Gladbrook, plus you had the worst train wreck in history up until that point in time just south of Gladbrook which was a Rock Island passenger train that derailed when it was being detoured on the Chicago great westerns line Southwest of Gladbrook between Green Mountain and Gladbrook

      Thanks for the excellent suggestion! Yes, we may very well continue on the journey into Iowa, and either head north to St Paul, or veer southwest to Kansas City. Thanks for watching and for the very good idea!

    Another great video and I'm really excited to see the next one. I taught in the school district that Aurora is a part of (East Buchanan) and it's a nice little town with a lot of great railroad history that I'm sure you discovered (and could ask around if you're looking for more).
    If you're going to do more on the CGW in Iowa, there is a bike trail that has taken place of the old ROW from Oelwein to Coulter and another trail that runs on some of the old ROW from Oelwein to Hayfield, MN (The Great Western Trail). The Waverly depot is especially neat as it's a restaurant now I do believe.

      Thanks for watching our videos and for taking the time to comment! Yes, we've very much enjoyed our journey along the former CGW line. Have met some great people and have been reminded of the importance of this once formidble railroad, cutting a line across the agricultural heart of America. Aurora and Stanley are coming up soon! We'll look into the bike trails running north and west from Oelwein. Much to explore in this region! Thanks again!

    Thank you for your latest installment! It may have been short but it was sweet. Seeing some ag buildings east of Concord Street, I wonder if it was served by the railroad.

      Thanks for watching our videos and for taking the time to comment! That's an interesting observation and question, regarding the buildings to the east along the ROW. Their position in respect to the ROW suggests that they may have had something to do with the railroad. We will have to take a closer look at the historical imagery to see approximately when they were constructed. That will likely give us a clue. Thanks again!
