You can also use car or poliurethane clear coats (or lacquers)
Great vid, amazing art! congrats
Car varnish? Does it work ok on top of acrylics? Be good to know and worth trying if so 👀
@@NicMac there is actually an automotive acrilic clear coat;D
Just apply it on multiple layers so u get a solid and smooth resin/alike finish
Polyurethane on the other hand works pretty well too, both give a pretty strong water resistant finish
If you use pearl or candy finished spray paints, car clear coating gives a pretty nice touch to the metallic colors
Just be careful to apply it with some primer cause the layers of paint and clear coat can begin to delaminate
@@olympusaviation7346 oh wow that’s so good to know, thank you for sharing 🙏

Getting a board soon so I’m watching literally every deck painting vid on UA-cam 😂 nice work and sick video 😎
Eeee! Yay, thanks so much for checking out my video Andrea! Hope you have fun with your board! And hope this video helped :)
facts
Same here, I’m getting a longboard in a couple weeks, so I’m gonna practice on spare wood and other things first. Definitely won’t be this complex and won’t look this Incredible, but I’m excited to try it out!
Same
Bro same, I have this cool design but don't know how to apply it on the board.
Imagine the pain grinding on this and watching the paint disappear
Edit: I meant sliding
it's not painful, it adds character and tells a story
The paint wouldn’t go away on a grind. Grinds are on trucks. It would disappear with slides

Gorgeous and clean work. The only thing I would say is that for the next deck you should keep in mind where the trucks will attach to the deck. I mean the birds face would have the wheels screwed right on top of it. I have this issue with many art decks, and I get it’s more meant to be a canvas rather than a functional deck but it still bothers me because I’m weird that way. I think incorporating that kind of thing is cool with actual skateboards but would probably mess up the composition for just the naked board.
Ahaha “I’m weird like that” I appreciate that Hans thanks so much for your message :)
Totally get you, this was defo just to be an art piece, but will be cool do design a “truck friendly” one too! Coming soon I should think ;) 🙏🙏🙏
I don't have the heart to skate that. Straight to the wall.
Hi! I also painted a couple of decks and I really like the way how you painted this one and how you made the video. Thanks!

how the hell do you have like only 473 subscribers i thought youre some big mega artist from the quality of that video and the artwork, im impressed (10/10)

@@NicMac oh i can see you blowing up with fans already! I showed my girlfriend your video too since we plan on re-doing my skateboard and she fell for it too! Keep up the great work😊😊
ahaha amazing thanks so much man 🙏👌
Being new to skateboarding and learning as an adult, I enjoyed this very much. While I understand that this level of art on a 🛹 deck is most likely going to be hung and exhibited rather than assembled with trucks+wheels and ridden in the streets or skateparks, but damn do I wish that level of artful detail on the bird head and eyes weren't placed under right where the skate trucks would go (within the bolt holes) 😣
I'm thinking of making my own business making custom graphics for people who want something that hasn't been done before, so this really helped
Where I live every year there is a charity event and you paint skateboards and people bid on them and the profits go to helping kids pay for there hospital bills. My board is going to be starwars
Ah amazing that sounds so cool!
Do you have a link for this charity? I would love to donate as well.
Cool artwork! After applying varnish you can smooth it off by sanding it lightly with 600 - 800grit.
this is too cool for use as skate, this must to be on the wall as a piece of art :D
I don’t understand why you don’t have soo many subscribers 😕😕🤯🧐🧐 you are incredible

Thanks for making the video, I’m working on a present for my little sister and this helped a ton. Great job on the board, looks great!
Thanks so much, what a great idea too 🙌🙏🙏
Wow, beautiful, Brilliant, talented, and doesn’t mind a man with a deck. I’m compelled to send you my sponsor me tape. I would love to ride for your art. You give me wood, with your art work on it. I ride that wood and then I advertise it by skating it. Which gives me a killer idea for a skateboard team, no logo, you have pro team riders of course BUT no pro boards, simply just your artwork with no context beautifully painted on the teams boards, the ones you sell to consumers will just be “prints” vinyl heat transfer copies of the original art pieces on these pro boards. I don’t even care if you take this idea. I hope you do and I hope that I can get one from a skate shop one day. That’s my thoughts. Wish I could draw :/
Awesome work! That line work is clean af for being freehanded. Definitely would be keeping it as a wall piece and never ever skated on...
Thank you so much 🙏🙏🙏
6:50 damn she really got us
Also it makes me slightly sad knowing the design will be covered by the trucks🙈
It probably won’t be used as a board it will just be displayed as art

Amazing Work!!! I found your video looking to buy my first board to paint and this is absolutely gorgeous!
If it wouldn't be for artwork how would you seal the painting for a useable deck?
Some people have resined it but it’s a mixed response, I’ve had people say it’s great and works amazingly and others say they notice it be a bit stiffer, so I can’t have a definitive answer if it’s good of not. I would just varnish it normally if you don’t want to risk it, but the painting will not last long, but that I suppose is expected if you will use the board. However this is why using resin instead of varnish, is a good thing as it really will make it last a long time, maybe even never reaching the painting itself because it’s a really durable coating.
Amazing work and thank you so much for the tips I custom design and build skateboard decks, all my board decks are hand designed and handcrafted hand shaped, and the tips you provided are going to work perfectly with my work
Amazing! So glad to hear that, thank you 🙏
Don't know if this is just for art or to actually use, but if it's to use, I hope you realize once you put the wheels on, it will cover the eye of the bird and kinda ruin the design.🤔
Art ^_____^ so just will be hanged 👌👌
I'm so glad you made this video! I've been using posca and recently the black and sometimes the white has been cracking and I wasnt sure why. Definitely gonna matt medium first now!
Ah yay! I’m so glad!! It confused me so much at first glad I’m not alone and am so pleased that this video helped share the solution!! 🙌🙌

I would feel soooo baad skating it
While I’m new to skateboarding, I’m not new to art so I immediately knew I’d want to paint the board
Holy shit! That is a banger drawing. I hope some board company hooks you up!
🙏🙏🙏
Hello, is ot skatable after painting? Just curious
From the other comments i think so, i really hope so
Holy balls that this is freaking gorgeous! As far as the resin I wonder does that effect the skateableness? Like if I were to do a board slide would it be more grippy?
I really want to know, ahaha as I can’t be 100% certain. I always say it affects the flexibility slightly, so the main difference I think is that it would feel a bit more rigid. However I’m only assuming so I’d really like a skateboarder to confirm this ahaha, but for board slides I think it would be ok, if the resin is set properly it feels as smooth as glass, so should be fine for slides 👌 there is a video of a skateboarder resin-ing his own board, might be worth checking out his comment section to see what he’s answered 👀👀👀
@@NicMac btw your channel is awesome and the video was really well made! Definitely subscribed, looking forward to seeing your channel blow up!
@@burgbuilds thanks so much man! And back at you with your channel! Absolutely great stuff! Loved seeing the speaker come to life, looked so fiddly! Looking forward to your next project! :)
As a skater I can say if its more rigid its 100% fine to skate its gonna become rigid from skating it anyways
actually I think it'll protect it even more if you put resin on so definitely do it
That board surface is smoother than my face LMAO
You do amazing work. I've had an idea for a series of skateboards for a while. I just never did it. After watching this, I'm inspired to finally do it. Thank you for your tips. Definitely subscribing. :D
Woah! Well that mean a lot man 🙏🙏 thanks so much
Yo this vids super inspiring and helpful thanks and dope artwork🤙
Amazing! The main problem is, once you add trucks they’re going to cover the face of your bird which is really sad, but the artwork looks incredible!
This was made to be a wall piece only :) but for sure would defo have to be designed differently if there where to be trucks 🤟
so if i dont put the varnish on the posca drawing, then when i put the epoxy resin the posca markers can melt and ruin the whole drawing?
Yes! You must spray it with varnish (brushing any other type of varnish on will also make it run) when you use marker but especially with Posca markers as they are water based and run a lot easier.
(Crazy timing this comment I’ve literally uploaded a new video on the topic just now!, so there will be more info there too)
Been wanting to paint a blank skateboard I had laying around for awhile so thanks for this video!
This was so amazing! I wish I had this level of skill, but I can at least draw simple cartoon characters. This video gave me lots of direction and inspiration to paint my own board.
Thanks so much
This was fun to watch
Thanks for sharing your artistry. I’m going to be hand painting my first board soon with acrylics & Posca with a resin finish. You know how to make a video that is easy to understand with clear instructions and a nice sounding voice. Great work. It helped confirm the process for me.
Thanks so much!! One thing though! That has come up here in the chat is that although a spray varnish is vital to “seal” the Posca pen details (as the resin will make it blur)……it’s best to leave as much time as possible after you use the spray varnish…..I would do some coats of spray varnish and then wait 4 days + before doing the resin. So there’s absolutely nothing “chemical-y” on the surface that will react with the resin.
(Also Make sure to wipe away any dust and/or grease from finger prints before adding the resin too, so there’s no reaction to anything else on the surface) :) hope that helps! Good luck ^____^
WOW! question...what other markers do you recommend...posca pens are quite expensive.
They are quite pricey but I haven’t found any cheaper alternatives that can do what Poscas can do unfortunately.
There’s lots of equal brands that are in the same price range, but posca is my personal favourite among them.
They do last though, so if your smart with what your buying for what you want to make, you don’t need too many to make a decent piece.
This for example, the line work could have been done with two different blacks and one white for highlights. 👌
@@NicMac thank you so much!
A am a beginner painter and I don’t paint very good and I skate so I was watching this video for inspiration 😃
One more question. What paint do you recommend for wood, indoor walls and metal? Would u always pick acrylics? Would u pick the same ones for different materials and what brand? :)
golden fluid
I can tell your a new age thinker you don't like labels so much you took them off of your caned goods I like it how do you know what's in the cans oh wait I'm writing words those are labels we all should stop writing, speaking, words are labels.....
So I have watched all 3 of your videos (including the Dickies one) to do with putting resin on a skateboard, and experienced the same problem as your first skateboard where the resin made little dips and I had to do a second coat to kinda fill them in. I've been thinking the solution is just a resin primer which you hinted at in this and the Dickies video but did not spell it out. What did you do to get the better finish? Thanks
I have poscas too but whenever I paint white on top of the black the white marker stains and becomes grey :c and yes I do wait for it to dry. Nice job you’re amazing!
One tip for you on spray paint; spray paint cans need to be vertical to spray properly so maybe paint on an elevated surface or hang on a wall. Cool video though, very similar to my work flow.
Awesome thanks man and yes makes so much sense, definitely will try to do that next time 🙏
Next tip, graphite transfer paper. Saves so much time and let’s you focus more on the whole design rather than...’is that where that’s meant to go?..where’s my rubber’. Which we have all done. Nice boards.
@@Canigetanawwwwyyyyeeeah Ye that stuff is mad good right? so satisfying, I've only used it a handful of times but keep it for more specific and planned out designs :)
The background audio was also so calming
Birdhouse skateboards would be proud
What would have you done instead of gloss undercoat, in retrospect ?
Im in love
11:28 very cool design. Loved watching your process including your work around after gloss varnish.
@@leigh-annh2544 thanks so much 🙏🙏
How much for a custom deck? Lol
what would you do different to make it where the texture isn’t “spikey” like you said happened in the video? btw absolutely love this design!❤️
Good question! The Spikey-ness didn't affect anything in the end so thats good! :) but I think the cause was spraying onto a sanded surface, which is a bit more porus. So If you want to spray paint then it's best to go straight into it on top of the original surface, so that it maintains the same texture it originally had. Hope that helps! and makes sense! best wishes, Nic
Absolutely gorgeous. Great work
Beatiful skateboard
Wow! That turned out so good. I really enjoyed joyed seeing your art come to life. That bird was a sick idea and the colours were perfect. Subbed and looking forward to new vids.

Amazing work. It's making me want to paint my snowboard.
I've always wanted to try doing this, and whenever I finally get around to it, this will definitely be my go-to video :) Thank you!
This is a great video .. I would’ve used chalk to do my sketch and I would’ve used a background color that I could’ve touched up at the end .. which if creative I guess you could’ve sorted out in an emergency
So incredible. Really thinking about painting a board for myself for fun (ignore the fact I don’t skate, lol)
What media/materials did you use? Can you list... brand/names
Daler Roney - Acrylic Gesso, Mtn 94 spray Paint, Posca Pens, Windsor and Newton Satin Spray Varnish, Art Resin 👌👌👌
Awesome... thanks...
@@artisticwayz09 aha you’re welcome, I think that’s everything I used :) but really, everything can be interchangeable, brand wise, except for maybe the “art resin” which wasn’t in this video but you can see it in the final result 👌 other brands have not worked well for me :) also I personally prefer Posca Pens over other paint pens, but there are lots of alternatives 🙌🙌
Thanks... This helps a lot... I’ve been thinking of painting on boards for awhile now... I only work on paper... this is my next transition to a different material to draw/paint on...
@@artisticwayz09 im just curious, why'd you put so many periods in your sentences-
I want to repaint my skateboard to a Deadpool logo on the bottom and the word “Deadpool” on the front, I used to be good drawing years ago in elementary but I have no artistic skills, anyone have any tips
@@ProFudgey if it’s a exact copy of an existing logo, you can print it out and use “transfer paper” to mark out/trace the design onto the board directly. Then it will be easy to paint it accurately.
In my video “painting for a clients house” you can see how to do it, I made my own transfer paper, but is the same technique 👌
@@NicMac how do you make transfer paper or put the timestamp if it’s in the video
@@ProFudgey it’s when I’m colouring a whole sheet in graphite, shouldn’t be too far in, sorry I don’t have the time right now to go and find the exact moment for you but it’s in that video if you are interested in learning more :)
@@NicMac okay thanks
@@NicMac I used chalk and traced the Deadpool logo and then put it on the skateboard and traced the logo on the other side and the chalk on the other side went on the skateboard and from there I just traced in pencil lightly and painted, I didn't have enough time though so I have to resand and redo it and use a clear coat
turned out great, the video just blew up.. hope you are reading this because: always wear a mask and gloves (mask is kinda optional depending if youre indoor or outdoor but the gloves just make your life easier)

Very cool well done. I have an old skate board to restore and I just doing my research.
That’s such a art piece wow nice job
Thanks so much 🙏🙏
Out of curiosity if you add chucks to this board and ride it, how long do you think the design on the bottom would last? (If you skate frequently)
If you don’t varnish it same as normal boards, with decent varnish maybe a bit longer, but with RESIN!! Pretty long! But as i mention in my latest video when I “resin” it, it can reduce flexibility a bit
you should do more skateboard videos and make it your niche :D
Your instagram link does not work!!

Muchas Gracias Kenyi! 🙏
Y si que puedes! 🙌 ¡Espero que sea pronto! :) 🤞
Is the Matt medium necessary? Will the paint work without it?
what exact pens did you use for line work/what would you recommend? loved the vid, super helpful and i love your work! looking to do this soon for my bf :)
Hey Zenaida, I mainly use Posca 5m’s for line work, I also like the chunkier 8m chisel tips for colouring and also for very straight lines that can be a little thicker, you really get a lot of control with the 8m but it is chunky so on a smaller piece of work I think I’d recommend the the 5m bullet tip as a great all-rounder 👌👌 if you had to pick one, but both would be best! hope this helps!
Question here!
I recently got a skateboard but it already has a design and i kinda want to paint over it. Will doing the first step do the trick?
@@actualtrashyy yes, sand it. Just enough to make the surface rough, you don’t need to remove the design completely, just make it rough enough so that it feels matte, so that the paint will adhere to it. And you can start from scratch with a plain painted base layer of gesso or some type of emulsion 👌
@@NicMac great advice! also still responding comments after 4 years 😎
