I fish for them in the springtime here in the South (Georgia & Alabama) when they run up the rivers and creeks to spawn.
Biggest one I caught was a 22 lb out of "Brushy Branch," which is connected to Lake Weiss and the Coosa River here in Georgia on the AL/GA line.

There is a large corporate company called Omega fisheries that has single-handedly destroyed the striped bass fishery in the Chesapeake Bay. They are a Manhattan oil processing facility that Parks their ships yards offshore inside the bay. Literally gobbling up all of them in Hayden and then there's miles of oil slick of scales. It's absolutely sickening and disgusting what they have been allowed to do to the striped bass fishery in the Mid-Atlantic region

Rock fish are getting a lot harder to catch in The chesapeake Bay and in the surrounding areas. Commercial fishing has really messed up their population. Over the years, they have become harder to get a large rock fish. I agree a hundred percent. Also, a lot of tourists are coming to Chesapeake Bay just to catch rock fish. The row is definitely one of the best parts of the rock fish.😊

The God’s honest truth! I live in Northern Jersey. Ten-15 years ago I was catching 45-50 lb bass . I’ve barely seen bass being caught the past 3-4 years honestly. With my own two eyes… always hear stories tho 😂

You’re an absolute scum bag if you have ever eaten striped bass Rowe or targeted these fish while they’re spawning/pre spawn. Leave them alone. If you ask me striper fishing should be banned in the Chesapeake and Hudson from September to July. Leave the stripers alone, you southern recreational guys are just as big a problem as commercial guys. In fact basically everyone should leave the striped bass alone, when you fish during the day 90% of the people you see are total morons who should be nowhere near the water.

Stripers are highly prized here in New England. Great to see you break one down. Because they have a dark, broad blood line, we often leave a thin layer of meat on the skin (high loins) when we fillet to leave the dark meat behind. A great way to serve striper is meso glazed (ala Nobu style).

That's the fish in my avatar! Except I don't catch them in the ocean, I catch them in Lake Powell in Utah. They do quite well out there. Actually, so well that there's no limit on how many you can keep. They tend to overrun their food supply (threadfin shad) so anglers are enlisted to help control their numbers. Which is a nice problem to have from the angler's viewpoint. Lots of fish to catch and eat! The average fish is smaller so we don't have as much meat to work with as you did here but they fry up good. Thanks as always.

Reed, I've been waiting several years for your definitive Striper Filet video, and viola ... Finally! We Mid-Atlantic/NE fisherman also look forward to seeing your masterful knife work on our favorite local varietals like Stripers to Walleyes from our more northern fisheries. As usual, fantastic videography and detailed explanations, and learned many new fine points and techniques. I was hoping, however, that you would also engage on what for many of us is often the most difficult part of fileting a Striper, removing the red "fishing tasting" meat left on the filets after you skin them even if the striper has been previously blooded? Granted, some folks enjoy their filets "marbled" but many of us prefer clean white meat loins, and that is very difficult (well, at least for me) to do without losing some valuable meat. Wonder if you could do a quick addendum WRT how you would go about removing the red muscle meat after skinning? Five star video!

I only keep 2 striped bass each year and release all the others. This video was so helpful and never thought to save the collars and cheeks even though I do it for every walleye I have ever cleaned. Also separating the belly meat is brilliant so the rest bakes evenly. Can’t wait to try it. How do you prepare the collars? I deep fry my walleye “wings”.

    • @kvanger
      @kvanger 3 дні тому

The collars are very good and extremely wasteful if you didn't keep them. I froze the head and collar of a stripe bass last year and took it out to make soup. I ended up pulling out all the meat to make some cakes. The texture of the collars are very similar to blue crab so it was almost like lump crab cakes.

I am on the west coast of the US, our striper are no size limit and bag limit of 10 - We tend to target the 2lb-8lb range. When cleaning a smaller striper, we don't have as many options, but they are delicious... the yield isn't great on anything below 5lbs or so, you can cut through most of the bones and spine with a sharp fillet knife pretty easy which makes cleaning a challenge on smaller fish. I like to de-head, remove the guts and scale for max yield for the "schoolies". I've caught a few over 20lbs but they are few and far between, and i typically release the big ones to keep the cycle going (I know the local large mouth guys hate me for it).

In my experience working in supermarkets, the only way to get collars is by ordering whole fish or a case of assorted fish heads. There's either not enough demand for the distributors to keep them on hand or the processors/fishmongers keep them for themselves since the distributors won't order them due to perceptions.

  • @mikeh2520

I used to catch them all of the time in New Jersey by spear fishing and on rod and reel. I'd fill my freezer with filets. Then, about 2011 or so, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection issued a health advisory for Striped Bass and Bluefish due to pollutants. This happened not long after they started to dredge the Hudson River in an effort to remove PCB pollution from an old GE plant. The PCBs had settled to the bottom of the river but the dredging activity stirred it up again. They started to find occasional fish that tested off of the scale for PCB pollution and they issued the advisory to limit consumption to one meal a month. That was the end of all of my Striper spearfishing. Sad because I loved to eat them and spear fishing by freediving was a great workout.

Need to outlaw multiple treble hooks for striper fishing...too many die even though they are put back. Safer for fish and fishermen. Several UA-camrs have gone to only one treble on lures and have no problem catching them. Heck Shad lures and jigs only have 1 hook and work great.

@ yeah that’s why it’s crazy to us. We can’t keep most of the fish we do manage to find, but they will charge us money for one. Lmao it’s insane and right in our faces .

In New Jersey, we can only harvest slotted striped bass. They must be at least 28 inches and no more than 31 inches. Striped bass are very plentiful in New Jersey, and the restriction are helping with the population.

@@reedthefishmonger No they aren't lmao. The fishery was about to close next year because of how bad it is. Fishing in NJ has become harder and harder each year to find these fish. Regulations have been put in place and it hasn't helped at all. If you even care, go look at the ASMFC. They were threatening to close down NJ"s fishery with no targeting in the height of the season in November.

Michael, you’re an absolute moron if you think striped bass are plentiful in New Jersey or anywhere for that matter. The population of striped bass is in the toilet. And it’s because of fools like you who probably inadvertently kill every fish you catch. There should be a striper fishing ban for everyone like you. Which is 90% of people you see fishing for stripers. All morons.

5 million striper being killed is insane and that’s the reason our fall runs have been having less and less quality fish

Absolutely, we need to have better regulations on all of seafood. I know people have to make a living but if they wipe out the sea there won’t be a living for anyone to make

It's interesting how western techniques for cutting fish and protein differ so vastly from Eastern, specifically South East Asian techniques.
Our techniques don't focus on keeping only the meat, but also the bones, prioritizing taking every single part of the fish as edible, and only disposing bones when we actually eat the protein.
