The main reason this lad capsized is due to the fact that he pushed his tiller when his boat started tilting. Instead, he should have beared away. This is because of the angle of the rudder hitting the waves. Other than that, he did well recovering from the capsize.
Try not let your sail go past 90 degrees. Also putting a bit more kicker on generally stops a bit of uncontrollable wobbling. Still you handled that well
@sgb0623 your supposed to keep your centerboard up when your going downwind or you wont go as fast. But yeah if you dont want to capsise then put your centerboard down.
Louis Chapman having the dagger board up would have kept the boat more stable and therefore would have helped him not capsize, but you are still right.
if he kept it down he would be slower and that is more chance of capsizing and usually when u have wind in stern u should keep it up bcs resistance is lower and the boat goes faster
Major Cool, he tried to lower (raise) dagger board with his foot! Sad that parents needed to get involved. Come on, let the kid race. He has probably just swallowed a litre of water, why give him more? He was doing fine, too many parents in ribs at optimist events.
Very far back for that wind I wouldn’t even sit that far back in 25 knots. (Not even bailing) You probably want to have your knees facing forward and touching center board gunnel and kiting. It could have maybe been saved if he didn’t try to bring it over for a dry capsize.
I’ve been sailing for over 47 years. I’ve sailed all kinds of boats both big and small and I’ve taught many people how to sail over the years. This boat hands down is one of the worst designs ever. It is however a useful tool for teaching young sailors to learn how to right a vessel and to learn how to bail but there are much better choices out there. If it were not for the flotation bags, the bottom of ocean would be littered with them. No boat once it exceeds downwind hull speed should submarine and this is exactly what these boats do. Just because they have been around since 1947 and there are thousands of them on the water and many classes around the world does not make them a great boat but people are like sheep and they do what is popular. Very sad indeed. If you really want to teach a kid to sail, teach them on a sunfish and later once they have developed much of their skill set, put them on a laser. If they wish to learn how to crew with multiple sailors onboard, put them in a Blue Jay. Our club a few years ago went to Optimists for junior sailing. The boats are perfectly fine in light air conditions but once the wind picked up, the young kids became submariners. Sounds funny but it is actually pretty damn dangerous. The builders know the inherent issues and this is of course why they come with flotation bags. The boats were sold off one year later for pennies on the dollar and not one parent that had a kid in the sailing program bought one of the boats that were practically given away. That pretty much tells you what we all thought about the boats. Honestly, its plain nonsense!!!!!!!!!!
Opti and extreme can never be in the same sentence. Ever.
+Thomas H Parker i know right
+Thomas H Parker not true
so true...
Atte Käyhty

+Thomas H Parker the accuracy
I have sailed these and floating bathtubs arent as fun as they look

Good job there joung feller. No panic or hesitation. get her upright get back in and start bailin. Got the makings of a good hand.
Very able kid, did all the right things, impressed.
Don't let your sail past 90 degrees.
questo

I LOVE OPTIS Its so fun sailing in 4 to 6 ft Waves
Pretty good. Great recover from the capsize

I am proud of that kid!
He only capsized because he main was past 90 Degrees. Having your center board up has no difference having it down besides speed.

Classic death roll, handled well.
Nice
Hey dude one question is that water wet?
I have been wondering that my entire life
He doing the best .nice
lol I have never ever capsized my opti yet....
Nice video!
What group is that? A or B?
Go Mariner!!!!! :D
on what kind of poor wind are u sailing or how much weight do u have wtf????
I hate capsizing optis, it's so much work... lasers are way easier
its easy
Me too but not lazers im ten and i love sailing and capsizing these (exept for when theres low tide
I sail optis
unlucky
@@noahmckay276 yep

He got a lot of water in the boat

Whats the name of your opti? mines called Tortuga.
why does he move the keel up and down, and could this of helped him not capsize??
If you know how to sail you would know. Lifting your dagger board up makes less resistance with the water making you go faster
Very far back for that wind I wouldn’t even sit that far back in 25 knots. (Not even bailing)

He had his dagger board up to go faster due to less drag
Why did you have your dagger board up?
FunnyKarma76 When you're sailing downwind, it helps you go faster.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
i have nevr capsized in a optie yet
Why did you lift the daggerboard that’s why you capsized
And sit more at the bulkhead
Told you its a bath tub
Hey do you know Justin and John
shoulda have been a dry capsize
how is this extreme its an opti
Extream and opti should never be in the same sentance
Thomas H Parker Yup
yeap 😂😂
King Kappa Optus can get fast but he over exaggerated it
the boy sailing very well but bad luck to have turned the optimist
this isn`t extreme
try getting out from under a turtled laser
An 18 footer is even worse
Poor him
ANDRE it can be bailed out
He is better than me
hike more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i agree. most of the kids i work with start on picos or sunfish, and then get bumped up to lasers.
whY do you only have one bailor lol
He had to much water in his boat he should have bailed first
but sailing is life
loollllll
you lost a bailer
ahh
