  • How does a Honda automatic DCT motorcycle work?
    This CTX700 features the same general dual-clutch transmission as Honda offers in the Gold Wing, Africa Twin, NC700 / NC750, and Rebel 1100 motorcycles. Is it better than a manual transmission? It does pose some benefits! These automatic bikes can be great for beginners but are also easy motorcycles for veteran riders.

    I am 70 years old and have bad knees and my hands don't work like they used to. I bought a Honda CTX with a DCT and after saying for years I would never ride an automatic bike bit I love this bike. I did have to replace the rear shock and fork springs. Sport mode is awesome. In drive I do manual shift some but in sport mode it does a great job. I have gotten 70 mpg. It's the perfect bike for me at this time in my life.

      I test rode a CTX DCT that a fellow had imported into Canada a few years ago, as Honda Canada only brought in the manual CTX, and I absolutely loved it. Unfortunately the bike had been abused and he was asking too much for what it was...I would have loved to put that bike in my garage. Settled on an NC750X with the DCT...loving the fuel economy, especially right now with gas at $1.87/L. 😨

    Any issues with whiskey throttle? I've heard ppl losing control of a DCT bike because normally you can just squeeze the clutch to smooth out any mishap on the throttle hand, but with DCT you don't have that option so any abrupt throttle control can take you for a dangerous ride. Thoughts?

    • @DailyMotor
      @DailyMotor  3 роки тому +13

      Arguably you could let off the throttle just as quickly as you could pull in the clutch, and I've never had an issue snapping the throttle too quickly. I suppose with an Africa Twin or Rebel 1100 you'd have to be more careful, but you should never be wacking the throttle on any bike. Fortunately, as a beginner bike, this one won't jump out as easily.

    • @1966johnnywayne

      That is likely the crowd that is used to revving the engine as a display of their manliness...Don't do that with a DCT.

    • @Skiamakhos
      @Skiamakhos Рік тому +1

      @@DailyMotor it tends to be that people grip the handlebar harder when the bike lurches forward, rather than be thrown off. I've been looking deeply into this as I've just spent £9500 on a used 2020 CRF1100L DCT - if your hand on the throttle with it closed is with your wrist within a few degrees of straight, maybe up to 5 degrees flexed, then if you overdo the throttle (by extending your wrist) the lurch will bring you back to straight & the throttle will come off. If you start off with your wrist flexed all the way down, then the forward lurch will keep the throttle wide open as you struggle to control the bike. A good idea is to rest a finger or two on the brake so that's available in case you need it. I'd add though, beware of panicking & grabbing the brake as that'll dump you if you're not careful. Subtlety & smoothness in all things.

      It is great for what it is. It isn't a dirt bike, speed demon or trying to emulate a sports car. It is a really nice utilitarian bike and I am glad to drop the archaic need for manual shifting. what is S mode? does that stand for sport?

    • @petergriffin8681
      @petergriffin8681 2 роки тому

      Yes there are 3 modes. No change in throttle response that I can feel, it changes when the gears are selected up/down. S1 slightly better than D, most clutch riders find S2 to be about approx with their current riding style, S3 is the sport bike crowd where the gear is held almost to redline before shifting up. Manual mode is just that, holds the gear until you select up. You can downshift when you want but if the bike senses incorrect engine speed as a result of shifting down to low it will prevent (think going from 6th to 2nd gear and blowing up the engine). Also she will downshift eventually on her own if you forget to downshift while in manual. She WILL NOT upshift. She’ll just keep bouncing the rev limiter until you remember to go up one or two🤣

It looks to be in pristine condition visually and the owner said it has never had an issue. What damage would I be looking for when inspecting the bike? Also, should I be concerned at all that it is a seven year old bike or should I not get hung up on the year of the bike? Sorry for all the questions and hope to hear from you soon! Great video!

      That's funny, that was a very similar situation to ours! Just make sure there's oil in it, and if you buy it, change the oil right away. Also inspect the tires and make sure they're not hardened or rotted looking. If it's the manual version, I'd say $4500-$5000 is about max I would go. For ABS/automatic, I'd be willing to spend an extra $500-700. Good luck!!

    Hey! Just wondering what the difference is between a scooter and an automatic motorbike

    • @aaronself2411
      @aaronself2411 2 роки тому

      Many bikers will condescendingly laugh at you and say "there isn't one" but the real answer is "Power, handling, style and range. Otherwise there really isn't much difference. Just a more complicated version of a scooter." However, if cruisers and sports bikes are fundamentally different kinds of bikes because of function and styling, automatic motorcycles are just that, motorcycles that are a little easier to ride, than the "normal" motorcycles. Personally, I think these are probably going to be the future of bikes, as they allow a wider range of people to ride bikes, and the market follows the money. Most people don't want to learn how to drive a manual car, much less something that's inherently more dangerous, and a little more complex to get the hang of. This solves half that problem. I'm looking at getting a rebel 1100 JUST because it has the DCT and I like the styling and it's something my wife might actually try to ride because it's so easy.

      Scooters traditionally have a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). Unlike the DCT which has 6 distinct gears, a CVT functions using a single belt and a variable diameter pulley and gives no distinct gear change feedback....just an audible change in rpms.
