Contact Form 7 File Upload Field Tutorial 📗 | WP Learning Lab
The Contact Form 7 file upload feature is a great addition that a lot webmasters will find useful. There is one trick to setting it up that many people get wrong, this tutorial will cover it all.
Uploading files via the Contact Form 7 plugin is very useful for any companies that have clients send them design files (web designers, sign printers, architecture firms and so on). It can also be useful for real estate surveyors and even government agencies that ask for non-sensitive documents to be uploaded.
So it has a lot of potential uses and it's really easy to set up.
This tutorial assumes you have to have a functional Contact Form 7 to add this functionality to. If you don't yet, check out this tutorial to build your first contact form using Contact Form 7: • Creating A Contact For...
Adding The Upload Feature
Click the spot in your form where you want the upload feature to be available. The click on the "File" button in the Contact Form 7 editor feature list above the editor box.
This open the file upload dialogue box where you fill in information about your upload.
1. You can choose to make the upload required.
2. You can set the name of the field to any string of characters you wish. I recommend you give it a descriptive name, not the default that CF7 will create for you.
3. You can (and should) set the file size limit. More on this in a minute.
4. You can (and should) set the file types. More on this in a minute too.
5. You can set an ID and class for that upload input which is option. You would do this if you want to custom style to input more easily using CSS.
Now that you know all the things you can set, let's talk about two tricks you need to be aware of.
Setting File Size Limit (in bytes)
It is smart to set a file size limit to protect your server resources and to make sure that the email with the file attachment is sent. Too large of a file will mean that the email won't make into your inbox.
The trick here is that you need to set the file size in bytes. These days we're used to file sizes in the megabyte and gigabyte range, few people still talk about bytes. So you need a converter.
Simple go to Google and search for "bytes to megabytes converter". The one I use in the video is this one: www.whatsabyte.com/P1/byteconv...
Then enter the max file size you want into the megabyte field. I don't recommend you go over 10 megabytes because many email servers won't allow attachments larger than that.
If you need your clients to send you files larger than 10 megabytes then you'll need to look into something like Dropbox, WeTransfer or Google Drive to send and receive those files.
After you've entered the megabyte size into the converter click the double arrow button below the field. That will show the equivalent values in bytes, kilobytes, gigabytes and terabytes.
Copy the value from the byte field and paste that into the File Size Limit box in the Contact Form 7 file upload dialogue box.
Setting Acceptable File Types
The next important field is choosing allowed file types. This is important so that people who want to do you harm can't send executable files or hacks through the upload feature. Although, this may be rare, it does happen and protecting yourself is relatively easy.
In the acceptable file types field enter the file types you accept separated by a "pipe" character. Here's an example for accepting various image file types:
jpg | jpeg | gif | png
The values you want to enter are the extensions of the files. So if you want to accept Microsoft Word files you would use
doc | docx
If you want to accept Excel files you would choose
xls | xlsx | csv
You get the idea.
Once you've set your file upload options click on Insert Tag and then save your form.
Now, the most important step. Test the file upload feature with file types you've added and the file size limit you've set.
Make sure to check that you always receive the emails that are being generated by the form.

Awesome, thank you very much! :)
Hi Bjorn, I've learnt a lot from your tutorials, thank you very much. Just wondering if there are any ways to add a barcode scanner to contact form?
I can't believe this tutorial DID NOT INCLUDE THE PART ABOUT WHAT TO DO ON THE "MAIL" TAB!!
+Stephen Curry Agreed, that was a new addition to the plugin since this recording. I've already recorded an updated tutotial, it's in editing.
Great tutorial, thanks.
I have a quick question on the upload button.. How can I change the origninal language of the upload button and no file chosen to another??? to spanish for example? If you have a solution for this, I would really appreciate it.

Can this be user for a classified ad website, for users selling their vehicles,
the uploaded pic goes in their profile for all to see?
Is there a way to display the image someone has uploaded in the submission area? E.g. I’m a customer and fill out my form then upload an image but don’t see a preview of the image I uploaded. As I currently have the form, the user cannot see what they uploaded. Is there a way to show a thumbnail on the customers end to help ensure them that they have uploaded an image?
Hi, is it safe to add a file upload form in the website, i mean even if we mention the file types as PNG or JPEG, someone will be able to upload a virus just by changing the extension to .jpeg or .png. ??
Hi, is there any way to change the color of the label which is on top of the attachment? The one which says "Please upload your...". Thanks.
Thank you for the help. MUCH appreciated.

Thanks for the assist!
Thanks for the tutorial!
You can also use the suffix 'mb' to restrict the file size in a more user friendly way. E.g.: 10mb
Thanks for the tip João! And thanks for watching!
I had some challenges also, but this is how you go about it.
1) Add that file tag number e.g [file-256] to the "File attachment" space on the "Mail Tab".
2) save it.
3) Sometimes it doesnt work immediately, simple solution to that is to recopy the contact form shortcode and repaste it where you wanted to use it initially. it surely will work this time around.
Thanks wp learning lab

Hi sir!
How can i quit "no file chosen"
Thanks!!
The file submitted is emailed to me. But I want to access the file in the future from the CF7 database. You can bring up the submitted information in Flamingo, but there isn't a way to access the attached file within Flamingo. I would like to work out of the Inbound Messages and click on the attachments in the Inbound Messages when needed. How can I do that?
Hi Cassandra,
I just did some quick research and came up with this CF7 add-on that may do the trick. It saves the uploads to a directory on the server and it says you can see the uploads in the wp-admin. I haven't tried it, but I'll check it out soon and if it works I'll create a tutorial for it.
Here's the link to the plugin: wordpress.org/plugins/advanced-cf7-db/
the problem is : where the file is uploaded , it uploads to a temp. folder under /wp-content/uploads , but the file is deleted after send .
Thanks a million.
+chummy Igbo No problem, thanks for watching!
For those of you that dont know, you need to add the file tag with the random generated number, in this video it will be [file-55], to the last box in the mail tab of this plugin where it says "file attachments". Just use the tag that you have generated obviously, and not [file-55]. Hope that helps!
Thank you. I'm awful with understanding how codes work and your comment helped. The tutorial wasn't even completed in the video
When i apply file upload , its working fine but the issue i was facing is that once i add the file in contact form it distrub the responsive version for mobile

It takes a long time for the file to upload. my upload speed is 5mb so is quite good. Is there anything I can do with settings to speed this up?
Upload speed usually depends on three things. It depends on your internet connection which you've determined is good. And it depends on the size of the file and your server's bandwidth. Other than those three things, there isn't much you can do to speed up the upload.
I hope that helps and thanks for watching!
Great stuff, but what about attaching multiple files ? Not just one or two, but many (say up to 10 files) ?
Never mind, I see you've already created a video for this ! Bravo dude ! :)
How set attachment no of file limit?
Ex: Attach only 1 file.
Hi, thanks for the video.
I have set the file limit on 10mb (10485760 bytes) but when I choose a file bigger than 6mb I get error "there was an error trying to send your message. please try again later." would appreciate your help.
I got the same error. How did you solve that issue ? bro. My max post size and file upload size on php.ini are 512MB each. which setting shall I check ? many Thanks
hi...info: can I also upload movies to mp4, if instead of jpg or png I insert the mp4 format?
Hi Angelo, yes. A visitor who fills out the form can upload any file as long as the file type is allowed. So MP4s shouldn't be a problem.
The only issue I can see is if the MP4 file is really large the upload may time-out.
I hope that helps and thanks for watching!

Hi There, thanks for the explanation. for some stupid reason, I laboured under the misconception that Contact Form 7 does not do File uploads until I perchance saw your tut.
I am having issues with creating forms that have equal field lengths. Not sure if there is a settings issue or a CSS fix here. Would be great if you could advise a way forward, or maybe you have already covered it somewhere? Thanks
+Robert Wardill Hi Robert, form field width is a CSS issue. I have this Contact Form 7 CSS tutorial that may help: m.ua-cam.com/video/bKarC0QO5og/v-deo.html
I'm always expanding the blog post that the video links to with more CSS. So if I'm missing something I'll make it and add it, just let me know.
I hope that helps
Thanks there for responding so quickly, helped a lot and have managed to get a long way down the road now with my Forms.
+Robert Wardill Good work! What do you have left to do on your forms?
when I send a test message with uploaded image... I only see the name of the file in my inbox but no image or way to download it. What am I doing wrong?

i want to change text to upload cv, how i do that?
Hi. Nice tut. Do you know how to create a file uploader for multiple files at once ? (With limitations of the same bytes). Thanks.
Hi Jose,
I haven't tried this plugin yet, but it could be just want you need: en-ca.wordpress.org/plugins/multifile-upload-field-for-contact-form-7/
WordPress Tutorials - WPLearningLab thank you very much! 👍🏻
already put the uploader but where to retrieve the attachments
Hi. May I attach two or more files in a unique form? How?
Hey Vanderlei,
There's a different add-on that allows for multiple uploads. There's a tutorial for it here: ua-cam.com/video/7FvY1Xuk-s0/v-deo.html
I hope that helps and thanks for watching!
Hi boss, the file upload system not working for mobaile responsive.Do you have any solutions for this system?
I created the uploader and it works well, but I now have 700 documents uploaded and I don't want the files emailed to me one by one--I would like to retrieve them in a batch and save them to my computer. Is there any way to do this?
+Norlan Page Hi Norlan, there is a way, but it's not pretty. There are no plugins to help CF7 do that, but with the code on the page I've linked to below you can have all uploads added to a directory that you specify on your server. Then you can log into the server via cPanel or FTP to retrieve all the files at once.
I haven't tried this code yet, but will probably make a tutorial out of it if it works as described. Here's the link: cfdbplugin.com/?page_id=794
I hope that helps ans thanks for watching!
i have craeted a from7 with file uploader, thats ok, but where should i see/view the files uploaded by the customers.....??
+Buddy Varun Hi Buddy, the file should be attached to the email that CF7 generates and sends to you. As long as the file your attaching is the correct file type and it is less than the allowed size limit it should make it to your inbox.
do not work attachfile input not received any file
same issue. I see in the test email the NAME of the image that was sent through the website but I don't see the actual image nor can I download anything.
Hey Ranz, check out this updated video. It should do the trick. Let me know how it goes! ua-cam.com/video/-RtBrUCSkBk/v-deo.html
@@wplearninglab Hi , I have one complex requirement. I am uploading image from cf7 form but saving it in custom table with other data, image got saved as BLOB type but while fetching it is not showing the image please help

im finding the solution how to solve after people uploaded their file. i linked it to google sheet but when files are uploaded, there's gonna be a link attached to sheet. then i can click to view file but after few hours if i come back to view it again the file is gone and it links me to home page site instead. if someone knows pls help me. thank you so much sir!
I want to edit the plugin and don't want plugin to remove the files after mail is send
Does it allow uploading multiple files? How can that be implemented? Say if I want the visitor to be able to upload an undefined number of image files? And if I want to limit the total size of the files and not the individual file size.
Also can I have a function for automatic delete from the database it uploads these images to, depending on whether payment isn't done on a subsequent payment page?
+80sROCKKKKK Good questions, there is an add-on for CF7 that allows multiple uploads, but it doesn't work well with the latest WordPress updates.
To do the other things you need Contact Form 7 isn't what you want unless you want to do a lot of custom coding.
You'll likely have to look into a premium form builder like Gravity Forms. I don't know if GF can do the deletion if the person's payment doesn't go through, but it should be able to meet your other requirements.
I hope that helps and thanks for watching!
If not contact form 7, is there any other plugin you can suggest?
+80sROCKKKKK Gravity Forms is one of my favorites, but it has a yearly fee. With the developer package there are lots of add-ons including payment processor integration.
The only thing I'm not sure of is if it can delete someone's uploaded content if they stop paying you. Which I believe was something you wanted to be able to do.
I don't know of a plugin that has that functionality, but there are loads of plugins I've never even heard of.
I hope that helps!
I have followed the video to a T and yet when I submit the form the email only includes the file name .jpg and not the actual file. I am not sure what is wrong. I have tried emailing the same attachment from another email to see if my email client is striping the attachment off but the attachment comes in.
+Carson Wyndham That's frustrating! In that case the only other option is that the mail function on the server is stripping the file from the email. Your host's support should be able took help you troubleshoot the issue.
Very nice and easy

1st of all thank you for the videos sir. they have been a great help for me. I have a big problem. My form is to collect information from my clients about the number of nights they want to spend on a hotel, the services they want etc, and than create a budget and send it to them. Can someone help me?
Hi Luiz,
I assume you want it all automated. You may be able to create a budget based on user input using the Cost Calculator Add-on. I've never used it but you can find it here: wordpress.org/plugins/cf7-cost-calculator-price-calculation/. There's also a premium version on Code Canyon, I'm not sure which one you'd need. It depends on how complex your calculations will be.
Let me know if that helps!
How can you add 4 photos with only one button. This is excellent but I can only upload one photo.
GREAT VIDEO BTW!
Lies cause "There was an error trying to send your message. Please try again later." Ihad in the form [file file-1992 limit:26214400 filetypes:.mp3] and even put [file-1992] and it still gives me message help!.
I got the same error. How did you solve that issue ? bro
follow the video and I am sure something is missing as we get emails with no attachment on them.
What happens with the MAIL TAB config ?
Does this look correct to you?

hi , i hope you are going well. please let me know any plugin to send the contact form 7 data as a pdf (want to send both sender as well as receiver). i had tested this plugin(wordpress.org/plugins/send-pdf-for-contact-form-7/). but its not sending the mail. please let me know the solution, if you have any idea.

Hi Aboobacker,
I don't know of any good plugins that will send PDFs for CF7 submissions.
When you are not using the plugin you mentioned does the CF7 form submission email arrive as it should?
How do I view the uploaded picture in my email
how to make file upload field inside textbox in contact form 7. And also file upload option is not showing in mobiles only showing in computers. how to make it visible in every devices
Hi Vivek,
You should be able to change the CSS pretty easily to make it appear that the upload button is in a text box. Let me know if you need help with the CSS.
Most mobile devices don't support upload features in mobile phones. You may be able to force the appearance of the upload button, but even if you did, most mobile devices can't use it.
I am not able to send attachment to email from CF7 if attachment is larger than 5.5MB. The file has been uploaded. My max_post_size and upload file size are 512MB each in php.ini. limit file is 25MB on CF7 setting. even I use gmail or office365, it's the same. Where shall I check next? Many Thanks.
What is the attachment size limit in your gmail or office365 account? Do files less than 5.5mb come through without any problems?
WordPress Tutorials - WPLearningLab yes, I am able to send attachment less than 6MB. Office365 email can send/receive 25MB. I am using WP Mail SMTP. Where shall I check email attachment file size limit ? When I send attachment via CF7 to gmail, I have the following error : " MAIL DELIVERY ERROR: the plugin WP Mail SMTP v1.4.1 logged this error during the last time it tried to send an email:

I hope that helps and thanks for watching!
Hi my Wordpress Master. Thanks for the tutorial. I tried this but, when I tested it, the attachments came always in CSV and empty. Do you know what can be?
SOLVED! I've found this ... "To attach the file uploaded through this field to mail, you need to insert the corresponding mail-tag ([file-191]) into the File Attachments field in the Mail tab."
+Smart Caterpillar Good find, thanks for letting everyone know!

Hello There, This video was really helpful and I could create an uploader in Contact form successfully. But I did a test to see if there's a file sent to my configured email address, and I received all the information except from the file. Can you please help if I did miss on something.
+Prem M Hi Prem, two things to check is that the file type you uploaded is below the size limit you set and is of an allowed file time.
If they are then your email client could be stripping the file from the email. This usually happens if the email client doesn't allow those file types as attachments.
I hope that helps!
Got it !! Fixed now. Thanks a ton.. Can we do 'Screen edge fixed position button' of Contact Form 7. Please help me with this or is there any other free widget I can customize hope am making sense :). Or I can send a screeshot as example.
+Prem M Hi Prem, I'm happy you were able to fix the file attachment issue!
I'm not sure what you mean by 'screen edge fixed position button', can you send me a link to a screen shot?
Hi Prem, how you fix the non-attachment? I am also facing the same issue. Thx in advance
hi, i am using cf7 and following you step by step but the message and file is not showing in my mail what is the matter?
Hi Hassan,
It's probably two different things.
First, how to add the file to message has changed in the plugin. Please check out this updated tutorial for that: ua-cam.com/video/-RtBrUCSkBk/v-deo.html&list=PLlgSvQqMfii5Q05RFNFaZhTbPomLfZssV&index=5
Second, the mail function on your server may be disabled. It's disabled by default on most hosts. Contact your host's support and ask them to see if it's disabled. Or you can using an SMTP plugin to send via an email account. Here's a tutorial for that: ua-cam.com/video/gqju-VMkn1Y/v-deo.html&list=PLlgSvQqMfii5Q05RFNFaZhTbPomLfZssV&index=29
I hope that helps and thanks for watching!
i am resolved the problem thanks for the guidance really appreciated.
how much files we can do uploaded? is it unlimited ? thanks
Hi Endang,
It is unlimited. With this setup the files are sent to your email address. So the only limit is how much space you have available in your email account.
I hope that helps and thanks for watching!
sir, can you show me how to customize contact form 7 to make country option, then automatically show state of this country , when i select state after that they automatically choose city of the state . Is it possible in contact form 7
Hi Ram,
That is possible with CF7, but it's a fair amount of work. I can make a tutorial on how to do that. The tutorial I make would use the conditional fields plugin that I demo in this tutorial: ua-cam.com/video/1AQEmecb0l4/v-deo.html
How many countries do you want this to work for? If you want the entire world it would take forever to make that work with CF7...
thanks, sir for your suggestion
I have found another way to do this by google places api, its work like , what i want but in not correct format.
thnks for it
Good work. You may be able to use CSS to update the format and styling.
i am receiving only he name of the file, as i tried similarly as u have described.. also the file size is 145 kb
pdf|doc|docx|jpg|jpeg these are the file types which i am using
one question ! where does the submition go to ? To my company's e-mail ?
Hi Renato,
The uploads are attached to the email that is sent to the email that you set as the 'to' address in the form builder.
I hope that helps and thanks for watching!
thanks that does it ! i am actually going download the wordpress.org so in that way the plug-ins are free and i dont have to buy the 300$ business plan , unless you know another way to do this sort of contact form with image upload that doesnt require the business plan .
Hi Renato,
Sorry for the delay. I didn't see your response. I don't use WordPress.com, but if it won't let you do it without the business plan then it won't be possible.
WordPress.org is a little harder because you have to do lots yourself, but luckily there are channels like mine to help you!
how can we upload 1 GB file?

Hi, did you do this? "If you add the file upload shortcode to the attachments field in the mail tab in the contact form 7 editor it should send the attachment to your email."
How to upload more than one file each time?
Hi Hojjat,
You can allow multiple file uploads with a different add-on. Unfortunately, most CF7 functionality is added with more add-ons. Here's the tutorial for Contact Form 7 multiple file uploads: ua-cam.com/video/5D9GDwDIJ3I/v-deo.html
I hope that helps and thanks for watching!
i need help i need to make this work from a localhost
Hi Dareal, what have you tried so far?
I get the confirmation email, but not the message or file!
Check on the Mail Tab of the editor to make sure the correct shortcodes are in the 'body' of the email. Then scroll down on the mail tab to confirm that the attachment shortcode is in the attachment field.
The shortcodes are found at the top of the mail tab
Yes and then?
and which part is exactly the 'trick' ?
lol, maybe I used the term "trick" loosely. Getting all the options right is the "trick".
Hello, any tip howto costumize it.It looks terrible XD
+Raol Xhumari You can customise the appearance of almost anything using CSS.
Specifically, do you mean customised the appearance of the upload button?
But here is not working man.Can you give me a solution??
IF you have email can you share??
Where is the file?
Hi Leonardo,
The file should be attached to the email. If the the setup in this video isn't work for you check out this short update video: ua-cam.com/video/-RtBrUCSkBk/v-deo.html
That should do the trick.
I hope that helps :) Let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks for watching!

Sorry for the delay. We just had our third baby and it's been a bit of a gong show around here 👶
You're right, not with this plugin. To upload multiple files, you have to use this one: ua-cam.com/video/7FvY1Xuk-s0/v-deo.html
I hope that helps and thanks for watching!
i get the email but not the attached file!!!!!
+Sandal Krisztian Hey Sandal, the first thing to check is if the file type you attached us allowed in the settings and second that the file doesn't exceed the size limit you set in bytes.
I have the same probleme, it's allowed in the setting and the file doesn't exceed the size limit, I recieve only the file name. There is a solution ?
brahim brahim yes there is. type on youtube: upload to wordpres. and u will find the tutorial. if u cant find it, contact me
or try this : atached files in email wprdpress
Thank you Sandal Krisztian, but I try to get it in my Webmail (cpanel) I don't recieve the files (pdf, docx, png, jpeg)l, I recieve all fields except "File Upload", do you see what I mean ?
This is sheerly wrong. You didn't show the result of uploaded pic to email
This does NOT work. After following all the instructions... It does NOT upload any file. Waste of time.
Hey Mario,
If that one doesn't work for you, here's the fix: ua-cam.com/video/-RtBrUCSkBk/v-deo.html
I hope that helps :) Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for watching!
