Independence is not about identity, it is about democracy.

I'd have said it's both Scottish Identity, which is the polar opposite of westminster politics and for Scottish Democracy time and again being ignored by westminster the parliament of a foreign country ..

@@Mik-The_uk_Union_Is_Dead Yes our political values (inter alia egalitarianism and participative democracy) are an important part of our wider cultural identity.

I think there is a stronger argument for federalism. The UK must reform. I cannot see how the tide against the present demographic shift towards independence can be stopped otherwise.

Cymru (Wales) and England did not 'come together' we were invaded then incorperated.

Beware the eloquent snake oil salesman. The reason we all speak English and are cultures are converging is because, under English colonial rule out languages and culture have been almost entirely extinguished. And his assertion that Scotland being under English colonial rule should act as an inspiration to the Ukraine to resist coming under Russian colonial rule is at best incoherent and at worst repugnant.

English is also a Scottish language. It developed in the east of Scotland around Edinburgh as well

The languages elsewhere went into decline after Culloden through efforts from the lowland centres of power. It was Scottish landlords anglicising the remote hills.
And it was just English colonial rule stamping out local cultures around the world either. I used to live in Dunedin, New Zealand - largest city of the Scottish colony of Otago. Planned, built, governed, and settled exclusively by Scots. They needed no English help relieving the local Maori of their land

@@astonia131 Some of the worst atrocities of the British Empire were perpetrated by the Scots but it was only possible for them to commit these crimes through the medium of the British Empire. The moral of the story being: 'be careful who you associate with for you will become them'. (And as a side note: what were the Scots doing in New Zealand? It wouldn't be because they were thrown off their land by the English by any chance would it?)

@@ianmacrae2710 One village in New Zealand called Waipu is made up of the highland clearance victims and that town is thousands of miles from Otago. Otago was planned by Otago Association founder John McGlashan and the City of Dunedin was planned in a room in Edinburgh. The population was free settlers and those chasing the gold rush.
Point being that Scots (including my ancestors in Scottish regiments) were fully complicit in imperialism.
