As someone who lived in Paris for over a decade, I have to say that "Paris is very pretty, just don't look too close" is the best description of that city I've ever heard.
And there are lot of prettier cities in France !

@@passport3763 well, there are very nice looking districts. Lots of historical buildings, the lights, the old apartments, tin roofs and their chimneys, the iconic sights you see in movies. All of it is beautiful.
But in the mean time most streets are dirty, there are a lot of homeless people, and beggars and some districts are outright dangerous at night. Places will smell like piss, lots of rats etc...
Also, mind your pockets, especially in the subway or in crowded streets with bars, because they'll get picked.
To summarize, the sights of the buildings reflecting in the Seine river near Notre Damme is amazingly beautiful. But don't go looking under the bridge.

Such as small crime, dirt, unpleasant smells, bad neighborhoods, high prices and so on. Overall it's a really great city though. Just not as magical and excellent as many people thought before they visit it.

As for the part about joking about people regardless of class is an overstatement. Me personally, I joke about about people of class. I regard them if I feel like making a joke about them if they deserve it. If there's someone who's doesn't deserve it, i won't make a barbed remark.
If I came across as sarcastic, it wasn't intentional. It just comes out naturally that way. I'm very sarcastic by nature even if I intend it or not. I don't know if some of this really made sense, but I didn't mean to offend you two or three comments above. It was just a fleeting thought that came to mind when I read the first comment.
